I have empathy in the general sense, but I'm also not the Vice President of the most powerful Nation on earth. Mr. Vice President, according to the data, Mexicans like those apples very much, but perhaps not "those apples.

It appears that President Trump was able to compell Mexico's cooperation on securing the Southern Border through the threats of tarrifs. This is the application of overt economic power, I do wonder if Trump's actions will drive other nations to consider and act to dilute similar mechanisms being employed against them. There is some threshold where countries might be willing to endure temporary disruption, to remove their economies from American influence. This would likely be an incremental process, and Trump has made some overt threats about BRICS challenging the dollar.

Americans, and Trump voters certainly, will consider Mexico being compelled secure the border as a victory.
What the aggregate economic of the market disruption is, may take some time to quantify.
