Cartoon Mania, Roundhouse Community Center

in #abundance3 years ago (edited)

Cartoon Mania is a class I teach children once a week in person despite the pandemic. I am pleased that these classes are happening because they do so much for a child's well-being. Cartooning is a place where young ones feel at ease and today, I wanted to focus on their general drawing skills. For some reason, when I upload a batch of photos on PeakD, they appear in a random order on my blog, I will leave the pictures in that order.

Activity no. 2, Katie is incredibly talented, she could have made a line of action to make it more dynamic but I can tell she is keeping a close eye on proportions which I like to see.

Do I sometimes try to instill a passion, lighting a fire my pupil's heart? Absolutely, for some, drawing will be fun and for others it may feel as boring as math or English, two subjects Katie thinks is just as enjoyable as art by the way. Still, I must encourage them to put in the effort, it can open doors for them down the road.

Hi everyone! let’s use social media to interact more, especially on Hive!

Katie took this picture of me after I disinfected my phone.

Vanessa is a character, that is for sure. She was focussed today, it was nice to see. Sometimes I worry she may take her skills for granted but really, she is multidisciplinary so I understand where she's coming from.

When she is in a good mood, she is the friendliest to have around.

This kid is amazing too, so impressive with the ink work! They are all 7 years old. He is pretty quiet and generally has a good attitude. Honestly, it is so easy to write about this group because they are such a pleasure to learn and grow with. Teachers do most of the growing, that is the best-kept secret of the profession.

This one is from the same artist, the bunny is actually a portrait of Katie which I think is hilarious. My programmer Sylvia got us some Jumbo sharpies and I am thrilled to bits about that!

I taught him to leave white around his spray can around the lower left so that it stands out. It's one of my favourite tricks.

Katie took this picture of me after I disinfected my phone. You can see the example on the easel to the left, I was asking them to create some movement curves to an otherwise static pose. The sooner an artist can turn a static composition into a dynamic one, the better!

This was the first assignment, turning our peers into caricatures but Rawat was not inspired by funny so I allowed him to do scary.

I kind of wish it wasn't a picture of that other kid to be honest. I like it but I find it a little scary. It is nicely contrasted, evocative and it is focussed compared to the rest of his work.

It could also be that the fear I can see in the drawing was a way to express worries about the changing world we live in.

This is the last one. Patrick did some drawings that are perhaps more interesting than this but I feel like this particular composition says more about his light-hearted personality. He loves the whimsical, talks a little funny with a high pitch voice and has an optimism about him even though he may sometimes seem insecure.

Maybe I try to read into my students too much but I just find that human nature is a formidable source of entertainment, if only because it is an endless quest to understand it truly.

I gave them an abundance of compliments today and I am glad I did because that encouragement will go a long way to get them coming back to the wonderful game of Art.

Thank you for being here and for being you, come back again soon!
