January ProgBlog #1: super-LATE-ive somewhat new

in #aer3 years ago (edited)

Oof I haven't done a progblog since the beginning of December and that wasn't even a progblog, it was a noprogblog x_x

So surprise surprise, the MacBook Air struggles with the kind of work I do. I had to keep toggling the particle hair on and off in Blender because adjusting things on my big rig was making that thing complain (it's an i7 something or other with 32Gb of ram), the small rig was unusably laggy with the particles on.

I'd like to say I must have been whining about it more than I thought as Sprat nagged me to draw instead, but she is usually nagging me to draw instead.

So I drew and this is what I'm working on at the moment.

Computer is gradually bogging down with the number of layers I'm adding, hoping it will survive til the end. I'm trying something slightly different with this one; previously I've done three light and three shadow layers for the main light and if there were any additional lights, they just got a light layer with an opacity level depending on how stron the light was. This time I'm trying three light and three shadow layers for each light source starting with the weakest one (the plant light) and ending with the main room lights (not done yet, I'm currently on the last shadow layer from the light coming from outside). Also planned all the light colours which I've only done for one piece previously as far as I can recall.

It's looking okay at the moment, guess I'll be doing this more often if it works out as it doesn't seem to be adding any extra to the time I would normally take for things like this.

And once I'm done with it, I think I might start working on sets as that will probably be easier for the small rig to handle (I hope) and it's a thing that needs to be done anyway.

This post also appears on my blog.

Want a crowd character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) Everything you need to know is (probably) here and if it isn't just ask (sorry the link goes offsite to my blog where the layout is how I want rather than the one here which is only here because the original one was).

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Come hang out on Discord with us!

Ask me nicely if you want an upgoat/cute critter footer.

Looks like this is coming along nicely. Which program is in the screenshot? I wonder do you use other open source stuff like Gimp of Krita. It is good to see where you are going colour wise. The blue guy reminds me of an Indian God.

It's done now :D

That screenshot is of Krita which is what I do all my 2d stuff in. I sometimes have to feed out images to Gimp on the nix box because Linux Krita for some reason does jpg compression really bizarrely.

I don't think any of the Indian gods had bat wings but it's been a while since I was looking at gods XD

I want to move across completely to Gimp and Krita but I still have an old photoshop which I don't have to fight with to get the results I want. It so so great these tools are now available for artist and photographers on no budget.
Can't wait to see your animations coming to life.

You shouldn't have to fight too much once you figure your way around the program.

then it will become a case of whether your brain wants to work with it XD

I can't wait to start animating! There's still soooooooooooooooo much to build though x_x

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

love the drawing =) are you making an animated movie or something?

Thanks ^_^ hopefully it will look better when done XD

Animated series...to some value of making because on average I can only work 2-3 hours a day on it (sometimes more sometimes less) and I'm not the fastest (because I have standards I can't meet and spend an inordinate amount of time making sure everything looks right and will work right, and also there's still a lot of stuff I need to figure out with Blender including stuff I did know but has moved or is now being done differently) so I'm not even sure if I'll ever actually get it done but I'm trying.
