En mis últimos post les hablé sobre algunas de mis experiencias en la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional Juvenil de Venezuela, entre ellas, cómo nos cancelaron nuestra gira por Estados Unidos. Pero, ¿que pensarían si les digo que ese año me suspendieron 3 giras más? Pues sí, en 2017 me suspendieron 4 giras que serían realizadas en Colombia, Grecia, Estados Unidos y otra por distintos países del continente asiático. Suelen decir que la tercera es la vencida, pero en mi caso fue la quinta. ¡Espero lo disfruten!

In my last posts I told you about some experiences with National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, including how our the United States tour was canceled. But, what would you think if I tell you that the same year more than 3 of my tours were canceled? In effect, in 2017 4 of my tours were canceled, these were in Colombia, Grecia, the United States, and other around Asia. People use to say that "the third time's the charm", but in my case it was the fifth. I hope you enjoy it!

A los 15 años luego de 4 decepciones seguidas es muy fácil desmotivarse, pues desde que era un niño, representar a mi país haciendo música en cualquier parte del mundo era un gran sueño, incluso vendí mi playstation para comprarme el traje que usaría en los conciertos de dichas giras, pero no fue hasta la quinta oportunidad que lo logre. A pesar de que cada vez tenía menos esperanzas, nunca me di por vencido y lo seguí intentando, mejorando cada vez más y más.

At the age of 15, after 4 disappointments in a row, it is very easy to lose motivation, because since I was a child, representing my country making music anywhere in the wolrd was a great dream, I even sold my playstation to buy the costume I would wear at concerts of these tours, but it was not until the fifth opportunity that I did it. Even though I had less and less hope, I never gave up and kept trying, getting better and better.

Luego de nuestros dos primeros encuentros como orquesta, que como les conté, era el primer oboe de una fila de 6 personas que fueron seleccionadas entre más de 400 de todo el país. Esta vez, 1 año más tarde, nos informaban que nos encontraríamos una vez más para realizar una serie de conciertos por Austria, solo que ahora no sería la gran orquesta de 300 personas, si no una gran reducción de 60 personas.

After our first two meeting as an orchestra, that as I told you, I was the first oboe of a section of 6 persons, who were selected among more than 400 oboists from all over the country. This time, one year later, we were informed that we would meet again to make a serie of concerts in Austria, the only difference was that this time it would not be the big orchestra of 300 members but a big reduction of 60 persons.

En mi mente seguía el miedo de que una vez más esta fuera suspendida, pero reunirme de nuevo a hacer música con mis amigos era una gran motivación.

In my mind there was still the fear that once again the tour was canceled, but meeting again to make music with my friends was a great motivation.

Solo teníamos 5 minutos de estar en el hotel todos reunidos nuevamente cuando nos informaron que acababa de fallecer nuestro gran maestro José Antonio Abreu, fundador y creador de nuestro sistema de orquestas, quien soñó que cada niño tuviera la oportunidad de tener un instrumento en sus manos con el simple costo de querer hacerlo y quien convirtió las 11 personas que asistieron a su primer ensayo, en miles de personas haciendo música, no solo en Venezuela, sino en todo el mundo.

We had only 5 minutes staying at the hotel, all gathered together again when we were informed that our great maestro José Antonio Abreu, creator of El Sistema, had just passed away, who dreamed that each child had the opportunity to own an instrument in their hands with the simple cost of wishing to do it, he was who converted the first 11 persons who attended his first rehearsal into thousands of people making music, not only in Venezuela but throghout the world.

Al terminar una serie de homenajes, quedábamos a la expectativa de si finalmente se realizaría la gira por todo lo ocurrido, pero nuestro director, quien además es sobrino del maestro, afirmó que lo que más hubiera deseado nuestro querido José Antonio es que esa gira fuera realizada con éxito, solo que esta vez, sería un homenaje en su nombre.

At the end of a series of tributes, we were waiting to see if the tour would finally take place due to everything that happened, but our director, who is also the nephew of the maestro, claimed that what our José Antonio would have wanted the most was this tour was made successfully, but this time, it would be on his honor.

Con tal responsabilidad, comenzamos los ensayos y preparativos para una gira donde interpretariamos algunas obras de música de cámara, (agrupaciones pequeñas) la famosa Quinta Sinfonía de Beethoven y la Misa de Coronación en Do Mayor de W.A.Mozart, obra que además de la orquesta lleva un coro y cuatro cantantes solistas.

With such responsability, we started the rehearsals and preparations for a tour in which we performed some chamber music pieces, (small ensembles), the famous Beethoven Fifth Symphony and the Coronation Mass in C Major by W.A Mozart, a work that in addition to the orchestra has a choir and four solo singers.

Este repertorio acarreaba un gran compromiso ya que la mayoría de conciertos serían en la capital austríaca, Viena, la cual esta considerada como la cuna de la música clásica, y lugar donde murieron Mozart y Beethoven. Era casi como que fuera un Austríaco a interpretar tu himno nacional, ¡en tu país!

This repertoire carried a great commitment since the majority of concerts would be in the Austrian capital, Vienna, which is considered the cradle of classical music, and the place where Mozart and Beethoven died. It was almost similar as I was an Austrian to interpret your national anthem, in your country!

Ensayamos mañana, tarde y noche. Incluso realizamos algunos ensayos con el maestro Gustavo Dudamel, quien a pesar de no poder acompañarnos físicamente, nos ayudó desde la distancia.

We rehearsed in the morning, afternoon, and evening. We even made some rehearsals with maestro Gustavo Dudamel, who despite was not able to accompany us physically, helped us from the distance.

Estábamos listos! Al culminar nuestros ensayos y nuestro concierto en Venezuela, teníamos una semana para estar junto a nuestras familias antes de partir. Algunos también visitamos muchas de las escuelas de Caracas para darles clases y apoyar a los niños de cada una de ellas.

We were ready! At the end of our rehearsals and our concert in Venezuela, we had a week to be with our families before leaving. Some of us also visited many of the schools in Caracas to teach and support the children of each of those.

Llegaba el día, por fin el sueño se hacía realidad, luego de cuatro intentos fallidos estaba en un avión rumbo a Madrid, ciudad donde haríamos nuestra primera parada antes de llegar a Viena.

The day arrived, finally the dream came true, after four failed attempts I was on a plane to Madrid, the city where we would make our first stop before arriving in Vienna.

Además de músico soy un gran fanático del fútbol y del F.C.Barcelona, pero era tal la emoción de por fin poder realizar mi primer viaje internacional, que lo primero que hice fue enviarle una foto a mi papá junto a la copa de la Champions en la tienda del Real Madrid, equipo del que él es aficionado. (aún me arrepiento, jajaja).

In addition to being a musician, I am a great fan of soccer and F.C Barcelona, ​​but the emotion of finally being able to make my first international trip was such that the first thing I did was send a photo to my dad next to the Champions League cup in the Real Madrid store, a team he is a fan of. (I still regret it, hahaha).

Y luego de 8 horas de espera en Madrid, partimos rumbo a Viena. ¡Llegamos! La mala racha se acababa por fin, pero apenas comenzaba esta gran experiencia y responsabilidad de representar a todo un país luego de 1 año completo sin viajar por las continuas suspensiones de giras para todas nuestras orquestas.

And after 8 hours of waiting in Madrid, we took off to Vienna. We arrived! The losing streak was finally over, but this great experience and responsibility to represent an entire country had just begun after 1 full year without traveling through the continuous tour suspensions for all our orchestras.

Recuerdo que llegamos de madrugada, era algo totalmente nuevo para mí, el clima, la comida, la ciudad, pero todo me encantaba.

I remember that we arrived at midnight, it was something totally new for me, the weather, the food, the city, but I loved everything.

Al llegar al hotel estaba muy emocionado pero nervioso por mis cañas. Las cañas son un mundo totalmente distinto que les encantará conocer y seguro que en otro post les hablaré de ellas y su fabricación, pero, en resumen son como la boquilla de mi instrumento, que al ser de madera, son considerablemente alteradas y cambiantes por el clima y la altitud del lugar en el que te encuentres, y al ser esta mi primera experiencia fuera del país, me tenía muy nervioso como iban a funcionar las mismas.

When we arrived at the hotel I was very excited but nervous about my reeds. The reeds are a totally different world that you will love to know and I'm sure that in another post I will tell you about them and their manufacture, but, to sum up, these are like the mouthpiece of my instrument, which, being made of wood, is considerably altered and changed by the climate and altitude of the place where you are, and as this was my first experience outside the country, I was very nervous about how these would work.

Luego de pasar toda la noche sin dormir por la ansiedad, desayuné y nos dirigimos a ensayar para nuestro primer concierto de la gira, que sería en la sede de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas. (ONU).

After spending the whole night without sleep due to anxiety, I had breakfast and we were to rehearse for our first concert of the tour, which would be at the headquarters of the United Nations. (UN)
