Another music video shoot kicking off a creative streak

in #art3 years ago

I spent my Saturday evening shooting a band at a beautiful venue. It’s an old converted church turned in to a arts/community space.

Here I am. Hunched over. Doing my back the world of good I’m sure.

the project is a performance video for a goth band called 1919

They’re based in Leeds UK, near me.
They’ve been around a few years (ahem - before I was born), and have had a bunch of line up changes since starting out in 1980!
However the current singer and guitarist are my age.
They’re taking the band in new directions, giving it a bee lease of life.

We had 5 hours to load in, setup, shoot everything and get out!

I’ve never ached so much the next day before in my life.
I shot everything handheld on a gimbal, and so there was a lot of movement, arching, arms outstretched, back vent over. Ooof.
It was pretty exhausting.

I’ve not watched any of the video clips back yet but I was happy with the style and tone we got from the setups.

I’ve had a flurry of creative music video work lately.

It feels good.

It’s given me focus to try out some new ideas and flex some new creative muscles and scratch some itches.

I’m hoping to have the project finished in a couple of weeks.
In the mean time I need to buy myself a new video editing machine.
My current iMac - although nice and does ok - is on its last legs.
It’s not handling 4K very well, especially not 6K.

I’ve heard very good things about the Mac Mini M1 chip for video work... so I think that would be a good value stop gap before I settle on an entirely new setup!

I’m also really enjoying using these battery powered LED strip lights on all sorts of projects.

Best £100 I’ve spent in years on lights. So cheap and so versatile.

Good times ahead. Cheers for reading, @ashtv.

loving the lighting and the location, great ambience for the shoot! I need to seriously learn more about lighting, its something that holds me back with my photography

It’s all about experimenting when it comes to lighting. There are no wrong answers really, except for pitch black 😂

These are the LED tubes I have, featured in the photos.

Amazingly versatile for the price. Worth getting one to experiment with!

Brilliant, thank you for the link! I can do pitch black hahaha xD

A little misty in there.., not that derelict church in Huddersfield is it?

No it’s a proper arts space in Leeds. Purpose made for goth bands.

Great that you can be working like that. I expect it was an intense session. I know bands are desperate to be playing again.

Yeah it was a lot of work crammed in to a short amount of time.
They seemed happy to be back and getting stuff done.

Quite weird to be around loud acoustic drums again (for me)
In fact, any volume above the loudness of a TV is unusual!
So that’s was cool.

I hope to be editing it all together over the coming days

When I try to edit 4k on shotcut, it stutters during the preview and it makes it very hard to sync anything!

Is that the red camera?

Good job on being so productive lately!

Ah ok. I’ve not used shotcut before. It could be like Premiere where you can preview/playback in lesser quality.. there might be a button/toggle that you can drop down the playback quality. That would help massively to be able to watch back in real time.

That camera is my Panasonic GH5, not the RED.
I used the RED on the other project - the video is going live tomorrow. The image quality difference between the RED and my poor old GH5 is quite striking!

Feels to good to be shooting this stuff again, and thanks for the the comment.

There isn't, but there is an option to convert the files for an easier preview, I am gonna try it next time.

Don't hesitate to share a link tomorrow, I can't wait to see it!

Thanks for continuing to make Hive awesome.
