When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees. ~ Genesis 3:8
We hide to protect ourselves. We build isolated walls around the things we value, good or bad, harmful or beneficial. We protect them behind those walls because we put our security in our keys and locks. We hide to protect ourselves with habits and old habits die hard, so they say. And habits become us. We don't have to stop and think anymore. This is this. What was once wrong is now right. What was once right is now tedious and uncomfortable. We can pass decades living this way because we simply just keeping the momentum on auto mode.

We hide to protect ourselves because hiding is just a fancy way of giving up. But God is a lover and never content to let us stay in mediocrity. He calls to us in subtle ways to woo us back, one way or another. And deep within our secret places, we yearn to be reunited with the Lover, spiritually prowling within our walls, restless like caged wild animals.
