Gail Arts: My first attempt in painting Horses

in #art4 years ago
Helllo everyone! How are you? I would just like to share to you one of the commission works that I recently made. This was a commission by one of our family friends and she's working as a supervisor in Department of Education.

Honestly speaking, I was just so amused that I would be painting horses. The very reason for this is because it is my first time to draw and paint one. I haven't studied one although I love these free spirited creatures.

I have sent her some of the paintings I saw online. I was not really into copying artworks of other people, but rather I wanted to know which she prefers. Would she want a horse portrait? Or would she prefer horses roaming freely on the field?

Now let me share to you how I made this one. Please take note that I am not as brilliant as other artists because I am still looking for my own art style. I am also looking for my own identity as an artist. I am also learning a lot from other artists as well.

Materials used: - 16x20in primed with gesso canvas - B lead pencil to sketch - different acrylic paints (a lot of white acrylic for mixing) - round and angle brushes

The first thing I did was to prime the canvas with light green paint for the foreground. I was imagining as to whether or not the subjects would look incredible with a defined background or not. I then decided to start sketching the horses. I swear, there were a lot of inorganic shapes so I spend a lot of time sketching and planning on how to execute it.

Fast forward! I wanted to see visualize how many horses I should paint and I wanted to add dept to my work. Honestly, the depth is one of the things I really had been having a hard time with.

I have thought of painting four horses. Three horses in front and another one at the back. I have also decided that they would be heading or approaching towards a stream. The background would then be a field, then behind it are the mountains. The image I have in mind certainly reminded me of Bukidnon.

And then I started painting the background and was so inspired by Van Gogh's work. As you can see I wanted to make my work as vibrant as possible. I wanted to use Liquitex but it is just so expensive for me now.

As you can see, I decided to paint the horses last because aside that it was my first time, I wanted to focus last on it. And tadah! I was done with my work. It took me 6 hours to finish it. What took most of the time were the horses because it was really hard to find colors that would look great when blended together.

I hope you enjoyed my work as much as I did. Til the next painting session with me. Ciao!

Love,
Gail

I must say, great work of art. If this commissioned art were to be placed in a classroom in one of the schools in DepEd, it would undoubtedly stand out. I saw your post from an article you were featured in and decided to visit this entry. No wonder you were featured as you clearly have immense talent. See you around!

Thank you for this. It means a lot.
