A Stroke Of Genius: Edward Angelo Goodall

in #art4 years ago

English landscape and orientalist painter Edward Angelo Goodall was born London, England on June 8th, 1819. He was a member of the Goodall family of artists. Goodall's father, brothers, sister and nephews were all artists. When Goodall was in his teens, he won a silver medal at the Society of Arts for a picture he did called Lord Mayor at Blackfriars Bridge. His father showed artist Clarkson Stanfield Goodall's work and Stanfield believed that Goodall should be painting professionally.

In 1841, botanist Moritz Richard Schomburgk and artist W.L Walton were commissioned by the Prussian government to map the boundaries of British Guiana. However, Schomburgk was afflicted with yellow fever. Schomburgk and Walton returned to England and Goodall was chosen to go to Guiana. He sketched the landscape, people and the animal and plant life. His botanical watercolors exhibited in Berlin and his sketches of the tribes were shown in Paris and London.
Unfortunately, I could not find his Lord Mayor at Blackfriars Bridge and the works he did from Guiana.

After he got back to Britain in 1844, Goodall exhibited his work at the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. Goodall was elected of member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1864.

On April 16th, 1908, Goodall passed away.

What I love about his work is the realness of it. When I look at his watercolors of Venice, that it exactly what it looks like. His painting of the canal is spot on with the colors and the detail. It brings me back to that Paradise of Pastels.

I wish I could have found the painting that wowed Stanfield and started Goodall's journey into the craft. Regardless, as I searched through his works and biography, I discovered paintings I haven't seen from him before. I knew him mainly because of his paintings of Venice. I was happy to discover his other European landscape paintings. The only other place I've been to is Seville. I've seen the Giralda but the landscape is different than what he saw all those years ago. Whereas, Venice is the same. Seeing his paintings of London, Gibraltar and Cairo make me hope I can see those places as well.

One day, I hope to travel to the same countries as Goodall. I hope to stand in the same spots and capture the same landscapes he did.
