Nearly Christmas

Nearly Christmas

Its nearly Christmas. Since I was a little kid, this has always been my favorite holiday. I have been asked this multiple times by multiple people, why? Because I am Indian, and grew up in a Hindu family in Calcutta (not Kolkata, when I write in English), people in the US often asked me if I celebrate Christmas. The answer is yes. They don't know, Bengali's celebrate every damn thing they can get their hands on. Also Christmas was particularly important, because that is perhaps the only time in the year when it gets reasonably comfortable in terms of heat and humidity (notice I didn't write cold, as it never really gets cold in Calcutta, not in European or US standard anyways). That had been the time we would go out and have a picnic as a kid. Later on as an young adult, would walk around the streets randomly. So anyways, Christmas was and is important to me, and I celebrate it as an atheist. Also, just like in Calcutta, it never really gets cold in Houston, TX.

I am fortunate enough to live now at a very nice part of Houston, perhaps the best part of town. In my neighborhood, Christmas is notable on how the houses are decorated with light. It is often so nicely done that people from other parts of the town come and visit my neighborhood to see the decorations. This is nothing special for me, as these homes are right along the street of North Blvd, where I do my normal evening walk. However, the decorations does make them special. As you can see, it is stunningly pretty.

We are also fortunate to have mild weather during Christmas at Houston usually. One of the great perks of living in southern Texas (other than No State Taxes) is the mild winter. Please don't get me wrong, I do like snow for a few days, but I hate to get buried in it. So while rest of the country is shoveling snow from their driveway, I do enjoy my evening walks in relatively mild weather.

People spend a lot of time lighting these large texas live oaks. Lot of these lightings are professionally done, as people in my neighborhood neither have the time or inclination of doing this type of meticulous lighting fixtures by themselves. Velocity of money I say....especially during a recession, it is a blessing.

One of the joys of these evening walks from my point of view is the fact that I get to watch these homes from outside, including my own. It is charming to look at your own home from outside, watching your family through a lighted window. It does give me a sense of belonging while watching my family around the kitchen table, prepareing the evening meal. Kids doing their homework around the dining table. I like to recognize this good and fortunate times.

I recently watched a Kurt Vogenaut talk titled "shape of stories" on YouTube, where Kurt described many fundamental tracts of various classical literature. However, on the side, he also described, as a human race we often fail to recognize when we are in happy-times. Also, we never fail to recognize when we are in trouble. Kurt mentioned, it is critical to recognize the present, which is often reasonably happy. So I am following his recommendation and recognizing that the evening walk that I had yesterday when I took all these picture was a particularly happy time. We are thankfully living during a time of peace.......st least where I am. I am also fortunate to have a happy loving family, my kids are well and healthy and we are financially free. Clearly this is a recognizable fortunate and happy time. Right now is good! In fact it is great!

Merry Christmas, Everyone!

Sort:

I love how the trees look. We’ve been so lazy in recent years when it comes to decorating. I got one of those 20.00 light displays that projects onto the house. Takes me 2 minutes to set up…but I do miss entire neighborhoods lit up. Happy holidays homie! Be on the lookout in your mailbox!!!

Thanks for the visit. I will be away over Christmas. Will be sure to lookout for the mailman, mind you they are working overtime these days so things could be slow

Gotcha. I hope you have a great holiday my friend. Much love to you and your family!

Wow sir those are really stunning view 😍, you nailed it. Really beautiful, that reminds me of diwali. Of course all can afford that type of lighting here thought 😉.

It's always good to reading your post. Marry Christmas sir 🥳. Have a great day and week

Oh my that is some jazzy lighting!! I like the fact that it never gets properly cold there. It's minus seven here just now which is a bit meh;

minus 7! brrrrr! LOL

Yes, as I am growing old, I am beginning to appreciate the mild winter in Texas. If I want to see the snow, I can always drive a bit north, but honestly, I do not mind mild winters at all!

I love a mild winter! We thought we were getting one as up till a couple of weeks ago it was 11 or 12 degrees. We were walking about in shorts!

Of course you do! We used to have lots a colleague at Aberdeen. They hated the dark winters there. I have heard it makes people depressed.

I put some of mine up last night. I was thinking about showing it on Hive, but after seeing this I think I won't...my lights pale into insignificance when compared to these.

Please do post them. I actually enjoy modest lightings, these are a bit over the top honestly!

I'll think about it, don't want to be laughed off the chain though. I showed Boomy a picture last night, he liked it, but you know what the Scots can be like. 🤣

Here is an idea. If you can make people laugh during these days, I think people should be grateful to you!

That's true enough. I'm probably overstating the issue as the lights I put up are not bad at all, but in comparison to those you show here they're a little lacking. Every house in my street has some though. Looks nice and night.

Also I never had a Christmas in the southern hemisphere. So for you Christmas is always associated with heat. I don't know how to wrap my head around that. I am unsure how kids wrap their head around that when all the Christmas literature and song and cultural elements are associated with cold!

Yeah, that's a good point, but we still have depictions if snow and stuff like that, always have. It's too early to tell for this year but it's been up to 45°C for Christmas Day here. That's 114F. Sort of warm huh?

We are the simple folk of the chain for anything that lights up!! :0D

We can't help it if we're impressed by a few glittering lights right?

Your neighbourhood looks like its Christmas right now, not nearly. Lovely area!

Yeah, its the old part of Houston. Very unlike the rest of the City. It is walkable, cozy, and of course quite pretty.

Bengali's celebrate every damn thing they can get their hands on

😂🤣

I like mild winter too. The worst I experienced was -11 at China. Winters there usually average below zero degrees. I hated the gloom. After spending winter in China I appreciate the winter in Bangladesh much more 😄

I like both to be honest. However, as I said, heavy snow and cold is great for travelling to, not for living.

I also like to walk the streets of the city at Christmas and observe the lights that the neighbors put up in front of their houses.
Unfortunately, we get a lot of snow here (in Czech republic). Snow is beautiful to look at, but... I don't like the cold, wet stuff.

Yes dry snow is wonderful. Unfortunately it never stay dry for long.

Please don't get me wrong, I do like snow for a few days, but I hate to get buried in it.

And I'm like that 😊
Since in Cyprus snow is only high in the mountains.
And in winter, in cities, the temperature rarely drops below 0.

It is very pleasant to read when a person is happy, appreciates and enjoys family life!
Happiness and health to your family!

P.S. Oh, I forgot to write that the street is very beautifully decorated!
Merry Christmas!

Great photos around the neighborhood. I always love the night scenes of christmas themes. The christmas lights always remind me when I was a kid decorating trees with my mom and dad eating the cookies I left for santa. I believed in santa for some time as a child. :)

and now with LED technology the bling has gotten a level up!! As a child it used to be real tiny light bulbs that got hot!

LED lights are cool. These are all LED lights. Their power consumption is minimal, they don't get hot and they last for a long time.

I love Christmas lights, beautiful photos and even better subjects!

@tipu curate

Although it is still a while, the preparations have begun. I'm sure these preparations excite people. The trees are beautiful. Let's just say "Merry Christmas" right now. 😀

Merry Christmas! Does Turkey gets very cold? I expect not

Yes, cold weather prevails in Turkey now. We are expecting snow.

Thanks to the tree decorations, it looks more beautiful at night than during the day.

Beautiful photos and homes, thanks for sharing this!

Your place is really pretty man!! it looks really beautiful with the christmas decoration!

But all those decorations are beautiful! I believe that when there's an opportunity to celebrate, you have to do it and when there isn't... you have to invent it! Holidays are always beautiful heh heh! I'm not here to tell you that Christmas is my favorite. My wife was also born in Kolkata, but she arrived here in Italy at the age of 1 thanks to the Sisters of Mother Teresa ... it was destiny that we met heh heh! Thank you for sharing these beautiful images and your thoughts 🤗

Whenever Christmas comes, all the trees are decorated with lights. This is a very big festival in which everyone celebrates. Everyone whether poor or rich takes part in this festival.

Very interesting perspective as a non-christian celebrating Christmas, thanks for sharing.

Also. the holiday light pictures were a very nice complement to the happy times we are currently enjoying. Happy Holidays!
