That decision is partly why we chose to base ourselves in a city along Italy’s East Coast — to finally dip into the Mediterranean, not just sail on it like we’ve done many times in the past. We ended up in Viareggio, a name that might not ring a bell for most tourists, but clearly is beloved by locals. The beach was lined with rows and rows of umbrellas and chairs, far more than I expected. It became obvious quickly that this wasn’t your typical public beach — the stretch of coast was privately managed, and if we wanted a home base, we had to rent it.
So, I found a vendor, booked us a spot with some chairs, and settled in. The waves, the breeze, and the low hum of beachgoers in the background made for the perfect moment to relax. I almost dozed off until the call of the sea finally convinced me to take the plunge.
The water was colder than I expected — definitely more of a cold plunge than a warm Mediterranean soak — but I leaned into the shock as a recovery tool after all the walking we’ve done this trip. The sun chose to stay hidden most of the afternoon, which honestly didn’t bother me. But once I got out of the water, the chill set in fast. I quickly changed into dry clothes to warm up before we grabbed a meal and made our way back.
The beach may not have been the highlight of the trip, but it was absolutely worth it. It reminded me how much joy can come from a change of scenery — and how even the familiar can feel fresh when you experience it in a new part of the world. The route back gave us even more beautiful views, and the whole experience added another layer to what has already been a memorable journey through Italy.
