Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (LV 1a)

in #classical-music3 years ago

There exist two versions of Zachow's prelude to "Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ". One ends in b flat major and is the longer one of the two, and the other, shorter one, ends in g minor. As they have many bars in common they are quite probably different versions of the same piece. Somewhere in his life Zachow reworked an earlier version and created the pther one. Only, which one is the earlier version and which one the later version, that than could be called the 'final' version? The author of the catalogue of Zachow's works, Heinz Lohmann, thought that the one ending in g minor was the earlier version and the ons ending in b flat major the 'final' version. Hence the designation | LV 1" of the latter and the designation "LV 1a" of the version published here.

The composition is conceived as a short fugue on the first phrase of the choral melody. In this version it is actually a double fugue, as theme and counter subject are presented at the same time and this combination of two themes is maintained in the rest of the piece. Because the counterpoint in this version is more sophisticated than in the version ending in b flat major, one could argue that this one is actually the version Zachow wrote later in life. And should actually the one to be designated with LV 1.

The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Hinsz organ in the Reformed church in the Midwolda (https://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/midwolda-surround-sample-set.html).

Hello @partitura
I have never heard a live organ, but piano, and even played guitar for a few years now. The sound of the organ takes one to other times, makes me think of medieval times.

Well, the music is not that old, but thhis particular piece is well over 300 years old and that sure enough was a fastly different time than ours.

Playing organ nicely. Your post is reblogged and upvoted by me. It is a good post. Thank you @partitura

My friend @partitura, how elegant and soothing this sounds, the organ is a beautiful instrument. As a child I used to attend a church where they sang with a choir and accompanied with a beautiful organ, your interpretation brought back nice memories. I thank you for the support you gave me in my first hive open mic post, it is really comforting to know that a good musician found nice what I did, I would like to support you also with good votes, but I am extremely new here and I have almost nothing of hive power, but I will help you to be more visible by sharing your nice interpretation in my blog and if later you continue uploading videos playing I will also support you, greetings !!!!

Another nice one!

As playing makes thirsty, have a !BEER from me

Thanks for the BEER. I guess I'll have a real one this afternon on second Eastern day. A Duvel or a Westmalle Tripel probably... :-)
