Las palabras delito y crimen muchas veces suelen utilizarse como sinónimos, sin embargo, tienen un significado distinto. El Delito se define como una acción u omisión penada por la Ley que se comente bien sea intencionalmente o por negligencia del sujeto, al que se denomina delincuente cuando es considerado culpable del quebrantamiento de la Ley.
Por otra parte, el Crimen se refiere a los delitos más graves, es decir, aquellos cometidos de modo intencional contra la integridad física de las personas como el homicidio y las lesiones personales. La palabra crimen sugiere la idea de un hecho violento con graves consecuencias. Los crímenes son castigados con mayor severidad que el resto de los delitos.
