DIY Offgrid Woodworking - Turned an Avocado Wood Bowl

We spent a good part of yesterday afternoon practicing our wood turning.

We had some small Avocado Wood pieces and picked on to turn a small bowl.

We really like working with Avocado wood as the smell is so good. The problem with it is the pithe. The center is usually very soft and we usually need to fill it with resin.

That's absolutely awesome congratulations and of course doing an epoxy seaing film is always a great idea.

Usually with centers like that I just use larger pieces and use quarter or 1/3 chunks and then work it into a cylinder.

Using lower speeds and a simple double cut bastard file I was able to work the large protruding edges down and off until it was much more closer to being fine machined into that perfect cylinder.

However sometimes you just find something that you want to create and you just have to work around the limitations that you're giving.

Phenomenal work I appreciate it!

Thanks for the advice. We only have a small lathe. We don't have a great source of large wood where we are.

Another way is throw a bunch of those chunks in a tub and fill it with epoxy. Or stack bits and pieces together glue them until you do have a large chunk.

Out here in the Pacific Northwest it is easy to find very large wood chunks especially if you have a chainsaw..
