This is my entry for #marketfriday created by the kind and compassionate @dswigle. Last week, after Steem Fest4 in Bangkok, two Steemit friends stayed on a few days. So I planned various tour guides around Bangkok for my two Steemit friends.

This tour was supposed to show them the Emerald Buddha at the Grand Palace. But that day the Main Hall of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha was closed to public as the King was going to perform a robe-changing ceremony for the Buddha statue in the afternoon. The Emerald Buddha’s robe is changed according to the three season: summer, rainy season and winter. So, I have to borrow some photos of the Emerald Buddha for you.

We took the express river boat to the nearest pier (Ta Chang Pier) and walked to the Grand Palace’s main gate. After having a short break and a photo shoot session, we went to buy tickets for entering the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

There were lots of tourists all around the Temple, the majority being Chinese tourists with several tour guides. They got very excited with the old and colourful architecture of the Temple. Whenever we stopped to take our photos, a line of Chinese tourists started right there to take selfies of the same setting. @daabi2006 and I found this quite amusing.

This Temple was built in 1782 when the Grand Palace was built for the first King of the Chakri Dynasty of the Bangkok side of the river. The previous King Taksin settled the capitol of Siam on the other side of Chao Phraya River where his small Palace seemed to be too small and restricted by two old temples on either end of the wall. So, King Rama I moved to settle on a much bigger site where the Grand Palace and Royal temples including his governing administrative buildings could be built within the confine of the Palace Wall.

The building in the background with blue roof is the Main Hall of the Temple where the Emerald Buddha is housed.

The Emerald Buddha had a long and complicated history. This Buddha statue was discovered (1436) in the ruin of a Pagoda in Chiengrai, north of Siam, after it was struck by lightning. The monk and people found this earthen clay Buddha, so they put this brown looking Buddha under the communual shelter with open space for religious activities. The wind and sun slowly dried up the clay until a crack appear around the nose of the Buddha. The abbot then cleaned up the brown Buddha to find bright green colour Buddha instead. So they called this Buddha the Emerald Buddha or Phra Kaew Morakot.

The Emerald Buddha was carved out of a whole piece of soft jade or green nephrite by craftsmen of the Chiengsaeng or early Lanna period in the north of Thailand. The news of the newly discovered green jade Buddha led the governor of Chiengmai to organise an elephant procession to invite the Buddha statue to Chiengmai. But the elephant refused to take the left road but took the right turn for Lampang three times. The governor had to accept that the holy spirits guarding the Emerald Buddha did not want to go to his town. So, the Buddha was housed in Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao for 32 years.

In 1468, a new Dynasty Head in Chiengmai called Phra Chao Ti Lokaraj did manage to move the Emerald Buddha to a temple called Wat Chedi Luang Woraviharn where the Buddha stayed for 77 years. In 1545,the Royal bloodline had disappeared in Chiengmai, so the courtiers had to invite a Lanna Prince in Luang Phra Bang, called Phra Chai Chettaturaj to come to Chiengmai. But he only stayed for one year (1546-1547), as he went back to rule the Luang Phra Bang after the Kong’s death. He borrowed both the Emerald Buddha and Phra Phutasihing for his family to pay respect. The courtiers did go to get back the two Buddha statues later, but only Phra Phutasihing was returned to Chiengmai.

In 1564, the king moved to Vientiane and established this as a new capitol of Laos. The Emerald Buddha was also moved to Vientiane and housed at Hor Phra Kaew. The Emerald Buddha stayed in Vientiane for 231 years until 1778. King Taksin or King Thonburi ordered his army chief (Chao Phraya Mahakasatsuk) to bring Laos back under Siamese government again after the successful liberation war against the Burmese. After the defeat of Laos troops, the Emerald Buddha was brought back to Siam and placed at Viharn Noi at Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn) next to King Taksin’s Palace.

vl4q7c2fsn.jpg

Magnificent Temple the Emerald Buddha sits in....

Yes. This is an amazing place. I always wonder how skillful those older generations of Thais had been! We could hardly measure up to them.

Yes, we under estimate our ancestors..

Now! I have a lot of respect for these amazing ancestors.

Fantastic photographs, so much detail and colors!
I see a lot of sacred geometry going on!

Oh! Yes! Lots of geometry designs and those giants from old legends! Yes, we had giants in the past! Just like in the Books of Enoch.

Cheers.
