Yesterday I had a question about EOS and my need to get access to more CPU to use on the EOS network.
I decided to make a blog post about it because I tried looking for an answer for 1-2 hours on the internet and I couldn't find it anywhere.
I also don't know where EOS people reside but I know crypto people are on Steem so it seemed like a good option.
My question was answered perfectly on Steem within 20 minutes and it made me very happy.
My problem was solved!
But what annoyed me (slightly) is that I HAD to make a whole blog post about it.
I couldn't just go anywhere on Steem and ask somewhere quick.
If that was an option I would just have made a quick post asking:
I need some extra CPU to stake EOS but I can't stake it because I don't have enough CPU, how do I solve this?
It would have saved me a lot of time.
But we all know that a 1 sentence blog post on Steemit.com can be a little bit sensitive.
And even if there was another frontend where I could ask a quick question that question would (most likely) have become a blog post on Steemit.com with all the potential consequences.
In other words, posting can be a constricting experience Steem. All your actions are constantly judged and it can be confusing too. It's simply a fun killer.
I think it's one of the reasons people feel less free posting whatever they want here, then on other social media.
I think there are people not using APPICS right now even though they want too because they are a bit scared to do so because of what the consequences might be if you post a nice photo to your blog on steemit.com.
It's all a bit silly because more posts in whatever app build on Steem = more activity and that benefits us all.
And besides all that, I was lucky that I had someone that read my post, but if you are new here, the post with the question might have been lost within all the other thousands of posts.
Luckily, all of the above will be solved when Communities arrive. And I can't wait.
When communities are here, next time I have a question, I can just go to the Crypto Community.
Write a quick post
And post it there.
It will not be posted on my own Steemit blog and therefore it won't be scrutinized by the good content police.
The feeling of freedom will be great! I think a lot of Steemians will like it.
It will also save time for a lot of people and we will also be building a whole database of questions and answers that other users might find on the internet and they might want a steem account too.
Also because there is no judgment I expect a lot more posts and engagement in communities from a lot more Steemians.

I think communities will be very powerful, must more so then people currently think.

In my experience, you can make a single sentence post but you can’t expect much in the way of rewards.
Are they still around? Havent heard from them in a while ever since they lost their steem delegation.

They are indeed. That front end is perfectly usable and all the posts are shown on every general blogging interface. What the loss of their delegation meant was only that they weren't able to reward anyone generously. But the front end is still there and as good as ever. In fact, I like its simple design.
Activities on there also crashes really bad as generous reward is discontinued though.

When you think about it, posting a photo is more work than writing a blog. I took this photo yesterday and had to get dressed, put on my coat, take my camera outside, walk to this location, take several photos, go back home, send it to my smartphone, edit it and then finally post it. Doing all of that takes much longer than writing a medium length blog post.
Those community features look great. I always wanted to have a way to post something quick and not have it posted to my blog. I think that is why Zappl never took off.

You make a good argument for why it can take a lot of time to take a photo.
But I can argue that taking a photo with friends on a night out takes a lot less effort than a blogpost.

Bringing friends to steem will be amazingly easier than the experiences I have encountered. Bringing a friend to Steem in the early days was brutal and non effective.
I have onboarded a decent amount of people and they all left but a few. I think the next onboarding campaigns will be organized by apps/communities doing it themselves.
Did there used to be a meme front end? What ever happened to that. I can't even remember what it was called now. DMania maybe. Something like that. I think this is going to be pretty awesome when communities come out. You could have also checked Telegram/Discord/Reddit for your question. You might have gotten some ridicule, but you probably would have gotten an answer too.
I think there were two at some point. One was Dmania for sure. I think when they lost their delegation the project went down. It's something we have seen more than once. Projects will need to have a second revenue stream to make it.
I think I could have used those channels indeed. But I want to use Steem. And with communities, I will all the time.
I was really sad to see something similar happen with Musing.io. If they had managed their delegation better they really could have amounted to something I think. I understand your desire to use Steem and I think it is cool how communities will help that. You should check out my latest post, all about retro gaming!

It would be great to ask questions in that manner within Communities, and I can only hope that it can work out in a way that you describe.
I guess for me, there is only a problem with asking a question on STEEM in post form because of the potential for rewards. On Facebook, Twitter, etc., you ask the question, no problem. On STEEM, I would say the majority of us have some amount of autovotes coming in on everything we do.
That tends to bring the "rewards police" out and in some cases, rightfully so. In others, it's totally overboard if not misuse of the downvote.
If there's a sub category where questions can go, I see that working out still, but if it's going to go into just one feed of the community in question, that could cause some issues, too. Being able to filter things, maybe? Any of those abilities in your testing of Communities?
There's always going to be a value ratio in anything we do as long as the potential for rewards are attached. The community itself might highly value certain things, but we've seen in the past where higher reward allocation to value (such as Dmania with their large delegation routinely upvoting memes folks copied and pasted from elsewhere on the internet) basically caused controversy and ended with Dmania having their delegation revoked and now Dmania is long gone.
So, as you say, less judgment, perhaps, with the community, but we'll only know to what extent that really is until we get there, and no doubt, the way things go around here, if one community is routinely receiving higher rewards over others without reaching that magical value ratio, I'm sure there will be unhappy people outside of that community who will try to shut it down (if that's even possible).
Seriously. I hope it works. It would be nice for it to work the way you say. For once something on STEEM working to everyone's, or most everyone's liking. :) Past, unfortunately, is prologue too many times, and I wonder if the insulation of a community will be enough.
I have not found subcommunities inside a community. But I think this should be possible to build in the future.
On a STEEM level that should always be possible. But when a community uses an SMT it shouldn't. Tribes already have shown this.
I think communities on steemit.com will be a huge improvement.
The main issue is that the entire crypto reward pool upvotes system simply doesn't work and brings along countless issues that will always cause frustration, disagreements and wars between all those that just try to get their hands on it.
The way I look at it, code should be the rule and any nobody but the system should be blamed for any kind of behavior / 'abuse'. Steemmonsters is pretty much the perfect example. You can do there whatever the fuck you want without ever being looked at or judged. In the early days bots were an issue and the system solved this by introducing the rules. A bit later, making countless accounts and getting cheap starter packs that contained all the cards was a leak which was also fixed.
The only way I can see Steemit working properly with real 'honest curation' is if it just switched to a proof-of-stake algorithm while allowing users to give tips out of their own wallet for content they like. All the bullshit on this platform would instantly be solved. Self-voting, circle jerking, shitposting, flagging wars, reward pool rape, auto-votes, comment upvotes, your issue with previous post,... and it would give investors a real reason to actually invest and power up since the tech itself is just awesome.
We had had bit bots and now we have curation trails.
If people would actually read and manually vote we wouldn't have this problem.
Regardless of price Steemit is definitely a fun killer at the moment.

@exyle are you looking at the sps votes? I removed my vote from the return proposal because I want @inertia and steem keychain's proposals to be funded. My vote doesn't matter though, yours does.
We are looking at those with @blockbrothers. We are currently still voting for the return proposal and also vote for the projects you mention.
Steem will be a much better place when people can come in and never run into any of the old steem users or whales and less focus on "all-topic trending"
