The Greenhouse on 5 July 2020

in #gardening4 years ago

Hello, and welcome to da greenhouse, eh!

It's been quite a while since I've written a post about the greenhouse, but things are happening in there now, so it seemed like a good time to write about it.

I grow paste type tomato plants in the greenhouse. They seem to like the heat, and they pollinate easier than the beefsteak type tomatoes. I have 10 big planter pots in the greenhouse that I grow the plants in. I use 15 gallon pots, they seem to be large enough for the root ball, as long as there's one plant per pot. My greenhouse faces south and I have the pots lined up across the south wall where the sun exposure is the best. This year, I chose to grow 5 Amish Paste heirloom tomato plants and 5 classic Roma tomato plants. Those two types consistently do well for me in the greenhouse.

Let's take a look at the tomato plants. These are the Amish Paste plants. They grow tall and need to be supported in some way. You can see the orange twine that I have holding up the plants. I also have to tie back the tomato cages to keep the plants from pulling them over as they grow. The white pipe is the gravity feed watering system.

These are the Roma plants. They don't seem to get as tall as the Amish Paste plants.

You can see that the plants are putting on tomatoes now. These are Amish Paste tomatoes.

This area has been having a heat wave for the last week or so, so I set up my big air circulation fan at the end of the greenhouse to blow air through the greenhouse and onto the plants. The air also moves the plants and helps with flower pollination.

One more thing...
I keep my cactus plants out in the greenhouse for the summer. They seem to like the extra sunlight and heat, I just have to remember to give them water occasionally. The one cactus has bloomed every year for the last 3 years, probably because of the heat and sunlight. The flowers only last for a couple of days, but they're quite impressive while they last.

This is the first time that it put out 2 flowers at the same time.

Well, that's my greenhouse report for the beginning of July, thanks for stopping by to check it out!

@amberyooper, your tomatoes are double the size of mine, I am so jealous. I can't wait to move my greenhouse to my allotment, at the moment mine are in the ground with no glass. it sucks but it is something I have had to do as a rush job. :D

Yeah, sometimes you just have to do what you can until you can get properly prepared, in this case with the greenhouse setup.

Tomatoes are looking great!
And what a surprise to my eyes - a lovely cactus with such stunning blooms! They do enjoy being outside in summer.

Thank you! :-)

Love those cactus flowers! Tomatoes look very happy. :))
