RE: Today in History: Hitler fails attempted coup (Beer Hall Putsch)

in #history4 years ago

Interestingly enough, that same beer hall almost became the end of Hitler sixteen years later. On November 8th 1939 Hitler, then already in power, attended the memorial ceremony there. He had to cut his attendance short and left an hour earlier than usual. That saved his life, because a bomb exploded, killing 8 people and injuring 63. The investigation later revealed that the bomb was built and set by Georg Elser, a carpenter with Communist sympathies. Elser was apprehended and put in Dachau Concentration Camp where he was executed in April 1945, shortly before Hitler's downfall.

ah, what a fantastic follow-up. I think I remember reading something about it but didn't know the details. Thanks for that.
