Spring has replaced winter, the nights are slowly getting milder, and so I went on a little nocturnal excursion in our garden to see who was out and about.
I would like to show you pictures of some small, but nevertheless really frightening predators ...

Der Frühling hat den Winter verdrängt, die Nächte werden langsam milder, und so begab ich mich auf eine kleine nächtliche Exkursion in unserem Garten, um zu sehen, wer da so alles unterwegs sei.
Zeigen möchte ich euch Bilder einiger zwar kleiner, aber dafür umso furchterregenderer Räuber ...

It is a 'Devil's coach-horse beetle' (Ocypus olens). Due to its strong, dagger-like mandibles it is one of the very few native beetles, which I do not take into my hand without hesitation.
Typical is the elongated abdomen with its malodorous secretion emitting glands, which is bent upwards in defensive posture. Despite the very short elytra of this insect, which belongs to the family Staphylinidae (rove beetles), the underlying wings are well developed and fully functional. |
Es ist ein 'Schwarzer Moderkäfer' (Ocypus olens) der aufgrund seiner kräftigen, dolchartigen Mandibeln zu den wenigen einheimischen Käfern gehört, die ich nicht bedenkenlos in die Hand nehme.
Typisch ist das in Abwehrhaltung nach oben gebogene, langgestreckte Abdomen, an dessen Ende sich ein übelriechendes Sekret absondernde Drüsen befinden. Trotz der sehr kurzen Flügeldecken (Elytren) dieses zur Familie der Staphylinidae (Kurzflügler) gehörenden Insekts, sind die darunter liegenden Flügel gut ausgebildet und voll funktionsfähig. |

These are fascinating shots indeed. Did you get a new camera? The sharpness of some these close ups is really remarkable. I cannot wait for the lockdown to be over so that we can get back to our home country and I can explore our garden again, searching for all the little creatures :)
No new camera, still the same old mobile phone ...

Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted the best pic of the wolf spider.
Then your skills must have improved :) But yeah, mobile phones are capable of producing incredible shots these days. It "only" takes some patience, discomfort (kneeling or lying on the ground :D) and a firm hand to take great close ups like these :) Sorry to hear you lost the best shot but I am sure you will have plenty of other chances ;)
Oooh goose bumps! Well, I can say one thing: Your bug posts definitely make me want to face my fears, I could have scrolled by, yet I opened it up to reveal the full glory!
You have a great camera. I have never seen an earwig in such detail.
I used to be afraid of them because I thought they crawl into people's ears at night when they're sleeping haha! Once I started gardening I realized, they are called "ear" wig because they LOVE to hang out in ears of corn!
I like the woodlouse killer. Their big fangs are designed specifically for attacking woodlouse.

Vor 3 Std. gepostet, scheint mir als waren dies nicht die einzigen Jäger der Nacht. :)
Also der Asseljäger ist jetzt echt keine Schönheit und das Hinterteil erinnert ein wenig an eine vollgesaugte Zecke. Die Wolfspinne ist schon eher meins und erinnert mich an die Huntsman hier in Australien, Sie jagt ja auch wie eine Huntsman.
Ja, ich mag die entspannende Atmosphäre der Nacht, in welcher man nur relativ selten Exemplaren der furchtbarsten Spezies auf Erden (Homo sapiens) über den Weg läuft. :)
The woodlouse spider looks quite elegant, with the shiny chitinous skin if you ask me. Those fangs or mandibles are quite large wouldn't want to be stung by this one. It's a lovely shot.
