Repair of my Hamilton Beach espresso machine

In this community of engines, I start this publication talking about the fuel that energizes my mornings. Every morning when I wake up I like to drink my cup of coffee to recharge my energy and wake up at 100 percent. This is a ritual for me, I always do it, enjoy the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, talk with my wife and plan the things I am going to do during the day.

En esta comunidad de motores, inicio esta publicación hablando del combustible que energiza mis mañanas. Cada mañana al despertar me gusta tomar mi taza de café para recargar energías y despertarme al 100 por ciento. Esto para mi es un ritual, siempre lo realizo, disfrutar del aroma del café recién hecho, conversar con mi esposa y planificar las cosas que voy a realizar durante el día.

On the weekend, as usual, I was about to prepare a good espresso coffee in an old coffee maker that I received as a gift from my wife a long time ago, it is a Hamilton Beach espresso machine, it has its years, but it is of very good quality, it had always worked well until that day. While I wanted to leave the house earlier recharged with a big cup of coffee, my coffee maker had other plans, that morning it did not want to work.

I thought it was something internal that was failing, only the indicator LEDs lit up, I connected and disconnected, tried to turn it on again and nothing, the coffee never came out. I then thought that it could have been a malfunction associated with the power cuts, nothing serious, perhaps an internal electrical fault or a fuse. As I was getting late I had no choice but to resort to the traditional coffee strainer, for me it is important to drink coffee, I do not need breakfast in the morning, just coffee, my wife does not like it very much that I do it, but I got used to it.

El fin de semana, como de costumbre, me disponía a preparar un buen café tipo espresso en una vieja cafetera que recibí de regalo de parte de mi esposa hace mucho tiempo, es una máquina de espresso de la marca Hamilton Beach, tiene sus años, pero es de muy buena calidad, siempre había funcionado bien hasta ese día. Mientras yo quería salir más temprano de casa recargado con una taza grande de café, mi cafetera tenía otros planes, esa mañana no quiso funcionar.

Creí que era algo interno que estaba fallando, solo encendían los leds indicadores, conecté y desconecté, volví a tratar de encenderla y nada, el café nunca salió. Pensé entonces que podía haber sido alguna avería asociada a los bajones de electricidad, nada grave, quizás una avería eléctrica interna o un fusible. Como ya se me hacía tarde no tuve más remedio que recurrir al tradicional colador, para mí es importante tomar café, no necesito de desayuno en las mañanas, solo café, mi esposa no le agrada mucho que yo lo haga, pero ya me acostumbré.

With the concern of knowing what could have happened to my coffee maker, I left home to run some errands and when I returned, a few hours later, with a little patience I set out to check it to diagnose the origin of the failure. To begin the disassembly I located the screws, immediately I noticed that they were of an unusual shape, they were triangular in shape, they required a special tool. This delayed me a bit, I had to borrow a triangle screwdriver, as I don't have one in my toolbox.

Having overcome this obstacle, I was able to complete the disassembly. After removing the top cover, I connected the electricity to try to turn on the coffee maker again and thus detect the malfunction that prevented the coffee maker from working properly. Being very careful not to touch any cable because the electricity was connected, I turned on the switches and noticed that all the indicator LEDs lit up as before, but even so the coffee maker did not start, nor did it emit any noise that would indicate that it would start its coffee brewing process.

Con la preocupación de saber qué pudo haber pasado con mi cafetera, salí a hacer unas diligencias y al regresar, unas horas después, con un poco de paciencia me dispuse a revisarla para diagnosticar el origen la falla. Para comenzar el desarmado ubiqué los tornillos, de inmediato me fijé que éstos eran de una forma poco común, eran de forma triangular, requerían de una herramienta especial. Esto me retrasó un poco, tuve que pedir prestado este un destornillador de triangulo, ya que no tengo uno en mi caja de herramientas.

Superado este obstáculo, pude completar el desarmado. Al quitar la tapa superior, conecté la electricidad para intentar encender nuevamente la cafetera y así detectar la avería que impedía que funcionara. Teniendo mucho cuidado de no tocar algún cable porque estaba conectada la electricidad, encendí los interruptores y noté que todos los leds indicadores encendieron igual que antes, pero aun así la cafetera no arrancaba, ni emitía ningún ruido que indicará que iniciaría su proceso de colado.

I disconnected the electricity to work safely (always be careful with electricity during any diagnosis) and to be able to check more thoroughly, then I noticed while checking the connection of the hoses that carry water to the water pump, that they were empty, completely dry, indicating that they were not sucking the liquid from the water reservoir to pump it to the pressurizer. I already had an indication of what might be happening.

The next step was to disassemble the water pump, there I could notice that it had an internal spring stuck, which prevented its correct operation. With the help of a pliers I managed to unblock it and verified that the hoses had no damage or leaks.

With the doubt of knowing if the malfunction detected in the water pump was what was preventing the espresso machine from working properly, I continued with a thorough check of all the internal components, the resistors were in good condition and the cables showed no signs of deterioration.

Desconecté la electricidad para trabajar con seguridad (ojo siempre hay que tener mucho cuidado con la electricidad durante cualquier diagnóstico) y poder revisar más a fondo, entonces me fijé mientras revisaba la conexión de las mangueras que llevan el agua a la bomba, que éstas estaban vacías, completamente secas, lo que indicaba que no estaban succionando el líquido del depósito de agua para bombearla al presurizador. Ya tenía un indicio de lo que podía estar pasando.

El próximo paso fue desarmar la bomba de agua, allí pude notar que tenía un resorte interno atascado, lo cual impedía su correcto funcionamiento. Con la ayuda de una pinza logré destrabarlo y verifiqué que las mangueras no tuviesen ningún tipo de daño ni fugas.

Con la duda de saber si la avería detectada en la bomba de agua era lo que impedía que funcionara de manera correcta la máquina de espresso, continúe realizando una revisión exhaustiva de todos los componentes internos, las resistencias se veían en buen estado y los cables no mostraban ninguna señal de deterioro.

Hoping that it was just that, and nothing more, I once again performed the start-up test, with the good news that it was already working again to complete the coffee brewing cycle. Fault corrected, fortunately it was nothing serious. Finally, I assembled, installed the covers and fastened the screws.

My trusty Hamilton Beach espresso machine is back and 100% operational, my precious morning cup of coffee is still assured.

Esperando que fuese solo eso, y nada más, realicé una vez más la prueba de encendido, con la buena noticia de que ya estaba nuevamente en funcionamiento para completar el ciclo de colado. Avería corregida, afortunadamente no fue nada grave. Por último, armé, instalé las tapas y fijé los tornillos. Mi fiel máquina de espresso Hamilton Beach ya está de vuelta y 100% operativa, mi preciada taza de café matutina sigue asegurada.
