Hive FAQ: Feedback on Improvement

image.png

The Frequently Asked Questions page on hive.blog needed an update for as long as it existed. Due to the existing FAQ being out of date and largely neglected, some dapps and frontends have started creating their own. That underscores the fact that the original should be updated to have universal utility.

FAQ improvement and rewriting:

It is clear that the FAQ can't stay the way it is. It needs to be rewritten and include information that reflects Hive in 2021, not Hive before Hive even existed. The original was written years ago by Steemit Inc and then simply modified for Hive, which is less than ideal.

I propose two things:

  1. Rewrite the FAQ to make it usable with any frontend and to answer questions in general
  2. Move it to Hive.io and link to it from hive.blog

Your input:

For the purpose of this exercise, we're going to set the design of the FAQ page aside and focus on the topics it covers.

The current FAQ can be found here: https://hive.blog/faq.html

Answer the following questions in comments:

  1. What FAQ topics are irrelevant and should be removed
  2. What FAQ topics are missing and should be added
  3. Any general feedback or ideas

I'm not expecting you to read the entire current FAQ to answer this. Simply reading through the topic list will be enough.

Your feedback will be collated into an issue here: https://gitlab.syncad.com/hive/faq

I saw that but didn't get a chance to go through it yet. Let's talk later this week.

The first thing I think I would change if we are looking at making the FAQ a universal tool for other front ends also is to do away with references to hive.blog and make it more general and generic to hive.io or hive block chain.

Most of the current FAQ is hive.blog specific, how to's for a front end should be part of the front end FAQ's.

It is not going to be an easy task if the goal is to 1. Rewrite the FAQ to make it usable with any frontend and to answer questions in general then it needs to move forward with that intent.

  1. What is block chain technology (a general description of what a block chain is)
  2. What is HIVE Block Chain? (What makes Hive different from other block chains)
  3. What is the Hive Token and HBD token? Why two of them? (Explain the Hive token and HBD token and their different uses)
  4. How do we earn tokens?
  5. Where do I turn when things go wrong?

I am sure there will be a whole lot more, but the type questions above are all general and not specif to an individual front end. Even in the old FAQ where they talk about security a lot has changed.

That's it for now.

I was a steemit user before HIVE existed, and I have to say, I can not believe how virtually impossible it is to update your profile image and cover image. And the FAQ's are TOTALLY USELESS for this. It really seems there is no way to change it. Originally I had to get an image up using the ecency app, and now I cant even get that to work. Its a mess, and quite frankly, embarrassing. This should be one of the most obvious and easy things to do.

On peakd.com it is easy to do.

On hive.blog it's in settings, weird place I agree.

Thanks, I eventually managed through the ecency app again, but I still can't get it to look good at all.

Have you tried this recently? I just tested on hive.blog and it works without errors. 'Settings' off your profile page, then upload image(s), when they're done the 'update' button will light up and allow you to submit. It takes a min for the changes to show up.

I eventually managed through the Ecency app again, thanks. But I still had to export it in a terribly small size and it still seem impossible for me to get it to look good. This kind of thing made me leave steemit, and made me give up on HIVE before. It really usually leaves me with a terrible experience. And I really want to like it. I really want to. I'll keep trying.

im going to take a second look at the FAQ later to do a better comment on it since the last time i read it was last year but this

Move it to Hive.io and link to it from hive.blog

Even tho i do like the idea that the FAQ should be on hive.io, we need the faq to be the first page along with the tutorials from @hivebuzz tour of hive to be the thing that new users get to see it shouldn't be so difficult to find some users dont even know there is a FAQ.

really great idea!

One thing that would be helpful to clarify on there is curation rewards. I still don't full understand how the amounts are determined. I get that 50% of the rewards sent out are curation rewards, but how is it split among that? I assume by the amount of Hive Power you have? Do curation rewards have a lower bound like how there won't be payout on a post below a certain threshold? As well, is there any way you can see which posts you have pending curation rewards on? In short, there's a lot I still don't understand about it.

In terms of things to add, it would also probably be a good idea to add a section about communities and all that. It may also be good to add something about why the wallet link on hive.blog takes you to a different page. Something minor, but it may also be worth saying what triggers notifications and why only some upvotes seem to do it (is there a threshold there? this has been minorly bothering me that I can't figure it out ).

Looking at the FAQ, some of the anchor tag links to some of the sections don't go anywhere nor are mentioned anywhere on the page (like the one mentioning cheetah). I assume those were supposed to be removed since they don't look like they are relevant to Hive

Lastly, in the "Can I delete something I posted?" section, it mentions that you can't edit something 7 days after it was posted, but I don't believe that's correct, no?

It's important to add info about communities.
What are they? How to create one? Can they be accessed through multiple frontends? Can they be tokenized?

That's a good segway into hive engine: What is Hive-engine? What is a side-chain? Are there other side-chains being worked on? Are there smart contracts on hive or just sidechains? How do I launch my own coin? How do I launch a coin and tie it to my community?

More generally, I think it would be good to focus less on the pure blogging aspect of hive and more on the fact that it can be used as a layer 1 to decentralize different kind of apps.

Gaming dapps should be covered, and the way they work. What is a custom_json? How can it be used to decentralize a gaming dapp? Smart contract vs custom_json? Is it possible to create NFTs on hive?

This is so necessary, I recently translated the Hive FAQ into Spanish and there is a lot of information that needs to be changed, updated, and a lot of information to add too.

Your translation when the new version is finalized would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I'll keep an eye on this so I know when it's done to start the translation. You can tag in a comment too so I can start just in time.

Here is a second comment, I've had a few more ideas, because those are questions that I really get all the time.

Is HIVE related to HIVE blockchain the bitcoin mining company?

Is HIVE related to STEEM? (Would be good to have a few FAQ relating to the whole fork incident)

What is the HIVE roadmap? Who is the HIVE team? Is there news about hive? Where can I see the latest news?

The mining company shouldn't be mentioned as that would include an unrelated brand. There was never any kind of relation and it was just malicious trolls harassing that company to try and use it to prevent Hive from existing.

First, it's impossible not to mention it because as soon as we mention the hive blockchain (our blockchain) we are at the same time mentioning hive blockchain the mining company.

Second, no need to mention it. The question could be: is hive listed on the stock market? (NO). Or, is hive a bitcoin mining company (NO)

We have different names but people often mistype them. Let's go with "Is Hive a publicly traded company?" "No .... etc"

I admit that hive-the-mining has no connection with hive-the-blockchain but people are mixing the 2 hives ... For example... I recently saw that the coinmarketcap news page for hive-the-blockchain was filled with news from hive-the-mining!!

Yes, their algorithm pulls the wrong information in. I will mention it this week when I talk to them.

Thank you 😊!!

  1. What I think should be removed? :
  • What is the difference between Hive and Hive.blog?

  • How often can I comment?

  1. Should be added
When somebody it's starting the first post it's normal to see the message error insufficient RCs 16327373 or something like that, it would be more easy to find the solution of that problem by adding it to the FAQ with literally the same words like:
Error insufficient Resource Credits, Why I can't post?

  2. An idea
People and investors always want things easy and simple at the beginning, the best way to achieve that is with a VIDEO.

Benefits of investing money on Hive and how HP and curation works. Showing them how they can multiple their money by curation or delanting their HP and earn money by doing nothing (all this in a video)

Other short video explaining the communities and what are for.

EDIT: it is not have to be interactive!,
I misss understood what interactive really means lol. With a video should be fine, something like this >>>

video made by the hivemeetup team

The video is a great idea. I don't how easy it is to make an interactive video but that sounds good too!

The logo you edit very nice and so lovely 😍.

Excelente post, muy instructivo, gracias por compartir, saludos.

Yes, it would make things easier. It took me some time to learn basics of Hive, and by going though your list I see that I still have to find a lot of things.
