Victorian Orphanage Urban Exploration - Forebank Mansion Scotland

in Urban Explorationlast year (edited)

Hey @UrbanExplorers and @Urbex Viewers on @Hive This is Danaidh B posting to you from Scotland

So yesterday The Dog and I, went to visit this Abandoned and "Severe Fire Victim of" an Old Victorian Villa, Previous Orphanage, and also Previously a Mental Asylum called "Forebank House" or "Forebank Mansion" just about 20 minutes down the road from me, in the heart of Dundee city.

When I first explored this Abandoned Victorian Orphanage/Mental Asylum I was taken aback at the crazy vibes I felt here.

"I had previously explored this crazy place during the first lockdown after it had a crazy fire. It looked in a very similar shit heap of a condition just like the Just Gents Barbers post I saw, it had been really fucked up and mouldy, burnt out, rotten and falling apart from the roof down."

"The Foxes still own this territory today, its basically their urban pad where they can forage for the streets for food waste and scraps at night in Dundee City. and catch mice, rats, baby birds and eggs and more.. This place was Extremely Overgrown and difficult ground from all the rubble

DSC04283.JPG

"I had a tremendous time exploring it, too tremendous to even remember to take photos for my blog, but at the time my laptop was broken and I was locked out my @hive account for 3 years... until about 4 weeks ago... and Booom!! I'm Back in Business Baby!!!"

"So anyway this is my first post in @urbex community which I know is mainly run by another fellow @teamuk and urban explorer "the main man himself - Mr @slobberchops You/He have/has some really good finds and I admire his work of "tales of the urban explorer". It takes a lot of effort to go out and do this kind of thing.

*"And as you said the other day my part of the world (Scotland) is best for urban exploration, well yes, it probably is because it's legal, easy to do, and the fact teenage kids that have nothing better to do ((and sometimes urban explorers like myself)) tend to break down the fences and padlocks the council put in place... which makes it so much easier...
*So I wanna say a BIG shout out to all the little curious destructive bastards out there for helping me always have easy access to my explorations!!! :) couldn't have done it without you"

Not sure what this is about??

Okay let's get started.....
This is Forebank Mansion/House, its an old Victorian Villa now apperently a B-Listed Building here in Scotland right in front of a Care Home in the heart of the City Centre. It has previously and initially was a Home for a Rich Family in Dundee, and apparently, it was also an Orphanage for a short time, as well as a Mental Asylum!, Squatted and Rotted, Burned Down to Fuck and now "on this blog"...

Here is a "Before Fire" picture, (the only one I could find and its fairly recently)

Here is an "After Fire" picture taken yesterday
DSC04266.JPG

**I seen the fire as it was happening, my friend stays right behind there, we were walking back to his after the pub and seen this heaving blaze around the time just before the 1st lockdown came in. **

This is a photo (from a local newspaper) of the fire just as it was being put out ((https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/dundee/413197/fire-abandoned-building-dundee/))

*"At first I couldn't get in any of the entrances without being completely covered in nostalgic smells of my childhood vandal grease stained clothes or try the other option of landing a 15-16ft drop to possibly find out I can't even get in...

I couldn't leave my dog outside?? or get her down the 15ft drop. I wasn't that desperate....

or was I??

Well This was the second entrance I chose, and was defeated by narrow gaps and more vandal grease and No "dog friendly 'garrisons'
DSC04263.JPG

Yet to my surprise the third entry I tried which was this big gate, was just a simple pull of the knob and a little squeak of the hinge and I was in!
I smelled fox pee straight away! and the dog was like "wtf are we doing here?"

Vandal grease on the gate??? Why Council...?? why?... there's no logic with the council here, waste of time, put some elbow grease in ya bunch of lazy bastards!!!
DSC04268.JPG

"I couldn't wait to get in, this easy-open gate was promising after a few failed wall jumping/vandal grease entry attempts".

"Looking Spooky Already!!!"
DSC04269.JPG

The ivy on the tree was just astonishing, it stands in the middle of an old path that leads out to the main garden area with even more overgrown madness.

DSC04273.JPG

Ah okay... I see they have padlocked this one... hmmmmm..
Damn You Council!!!...
DSC04274.JPG

Let's try the other entrance along here :)
oh.... That wasn't there last time?
DSC04277.JPG

This next entry was about 3 metres up, sketchy AF! The bramble bushes Seriously Overgrown and stood easily 1.5 metres tall and these Buddleia Bushes about 2-3 metres, again... me and the dog can't get in.

**The pressure and heat from the fires this building has experienced has moved the bricks on the extension wall where it has moved quite a considerable amount and bent this bar here!! Awesome!!
DSC04285.JPG

I think we've all been up the back passage a few times! x-D
Tried a new way in, down this very narrow walkway.
DSC04288.JPG

Shit... This is new... Bricked up, Boarded up, No entry!
really wanna get in!!
DSC04295.JPG

So unfortunately .....(sorry for the anti-climax).... I did not manage to gain entry this time round, so I just turned the next half hour of my exploring into some photography shots and hoping this is just the beginning of something wonderful!

This is the front garden looking over the City of Dundee onto the River Tay

DSC04297.JPG

Eery vibes! Looks like one of the Orphans play carts!?
DSC04056.JPG

When I first came here, there was about 50 rooms all exactly the same with holes in the floor about 8ft deep, spiders bigger than my hand, mould-riddled, caved in burnt ceilings, clothes and papers and suitcases, the usual "leave-behind" stuff when doing Urbex.

This was on the road outside as I was leaving.. maybe a clue?? Treasure??? :-0

Good old Dundee, there are a few romps around that way!

Aw yeah, I know, and with all the lockdown close downs etc I bet there are some fresh ones waiting to be tapped!
Stay tuned for more.
Gonna try do one every couple weeks.
✌🏼

Sounds like a plan!

Awesome.I never thought to drag the kids on an explore before. Mines world probably complain too much 😃

Haha yeh they love it, they are really noisy and distracting tho, but it’s fun for them especially since we seen it fresh abandonment during lockdown, it would have been perfect for this blog, unfortunately it’s getting done up just now.

Go for it take ‘em out man! Be careful though! Pick your place wisely :)

*So I wanna say a BIG shout out to all the little curious destructive bastards out there for helping me always have easy access to my explorations!!! :) couldn't have done it without you"

LOL.., they are a thoughtful bunch providing ladders, chairs, bins and other things to aid us, some that collapse when stood upon. Well you cant have it all..,

This is great man, @grindle will approve even if you didn't get in. How your dog is gonna climb through windows is another matter, and watch out for broken glass underfoot.. not good for dogdog.

Hahaha.. I was once one of these little bastards too y’know, lol..
Leaving mess behind n all that! Now I’m pretty eco-conscious and respectful haha.

Aw yeah, I’ll have to go back Dogless next time for best results! 👌🏼

And thank you for your support my friend

You are welcome, I love good content and hopefully another curation group will pick up on this.

Thanks man 🤟
Yeah I’ll keep finding new places, there’s plenty!! and hopefully get to re-enter “round 3 of Forebank Mansion”

And thank you for your support my friend 👍

That’s a decent little mooch there @danaidhbee , nice story too, looking forward to seeing more of your exploits “up the back passage”

Thanks! 👍 aye I’ll need to go back for round 3 without the dog next time. Haha.
Nice one! Stay tuned my friend

Great post dude , you'll need to show me this place when Im through. It might be worth making the file sizes of the photos smaller ,they take ages to load as they are. I used to get the same problem with mine when loading them as they are of the camera,I drop the size down by around 60% and they load a lot faster.

Yeah some people see them load fine and others don’t, I see them half grey one day and the next they’re fine.
I have been making the sizes smaller but doesn’t always work

So how are you dropping the sizes then?? I’ve been opening it in paint and that sometimes halves the size, but doesn’t always work

Aye its paint I use, up the top, there's the option to change the size, for some reason the full picture size on paint is like the size of a poster so I drop it way down until it fits on the screen as one full image and its usually fine.

Which option is that?? Is it resize and skew??
Think I’ve got it, but does that not take away pixel value the smaller it gets?
