Tales of the Urban Explorer: Preston Motor Village

in Urban Exploration4 years ago (edited)

My second attempt at having a look around the doomed Preston Motor Village was going to be much better than the first.

Had I left it too late?

It was a year earlier when I had scouted out this big car showroom that had gone 'BOOM' overnight; the cause being a suspected arson attack.

In December 2018 the whole place went up in flames causing nearby residents to be temporarily evacuated. I saw some UX reports shortly after showing lots of cars lined up, all burnt out and rust in colour.

It looked quite spectacular and I knew at some point that I needed to visit this one.

12 months beforehand I had visited, looked at the gates, and thought, 'impenetrable fortress’. With @dizzydiscovery in tow, it seemed that was no longer the case.

2_IMG_2793_2.jpg

He seems to have a nose at finding weak spots but that can only get you so far. After a jaunt through some overgrown wasteland, a 10-foot drop was something neither of us was looking forward too.

1_IMG_2792_1.jpg

Some kind soul had attached a very thick cord, so shimmying down a tree was fine, but hauling yourself back up? I’m not a participant of Gladiators and likely never will be.

@dizzydiscovery went down like a cat, he’s the shape I used to be 20 years ago and I’m quite jealous. After around 10 minutes of silence, he called me telling me to come down.

Fucking hell, here we go. I just about avoided getting hand burns on the cord and tried to slip down the same way he did and just made it only with the elegance of an elephant.

…’OK great, but how were we going to get out? A life-long diet of consuming rusty car did not seem appealing’…

It took me around 15 minutes to find @dizzydiscovery as the area is quite large.

3_IMG_2794_3.jpg

The whole area looked like some kind of ‘rust city’, with piles of cars gelled together next to a rusty contraption of a former roof and housing.

4_IMG_2795_4.jpg

5_IMG_2796_5.jpg

I made my way through piles of rusty car parts and wheels to where I thought the amazing sight was going to be.

8_IMG_2799_8.jpg

The sight was not quite what I imagined. Some sort of clean-up job had been done that involved car stacking.

6_IMG_2797_6.jpg

Other piles contained part of what was the roof.

10_IMG_2801_10.jpg

This dodgy-looking building was too dark for the most part to see anything. Due to all the climbing, my lighting equipment had been left in the car.

9_IMG_2800_9.jpg

Some old car doors were all I could see in there.

11_IMG_2802_11.jpg

13_IMG_2804_13.jpg

After a call from @dizzydiscovery amounting to, ‘where the fuck are you’, we met and got into what was maybe the old offices.

14_IMG_2805_14.jpg

15_IMG_2806_15.jpg

There were a few cars in here that had survived the blaze, one being an old Mercedes. It has not done quite so well against the vandals.

The mandatory boiler room with instructions on usage!

26_IMG_2817_26.jpg

A few parts complete with circuit boards.

25_IMG_2816_25.jpg

.. and the mandatory toilet shot.

29_IMG_2820_29.jpg

31_IMG_2822_31.jpg

Of course, to stop the tedium of working, you need a book on the Third Reich. I did have a short read, quite interesting but a little out of place.

34_IMG_2825_34.jpg

We left the offices to have a look again at what used to be the indoor showroom that once housed several hundred vehicles.

32_IMG_2823_32.jpg

@dizzydiscovery reckons this was a Porche 911, what do you think?

35_IMG_2826_35.jpg

The clumps of cars were a little disappointing compared to what I had seen beforehand.

That’s what you get for buggering about. In a few months, they may be gone altogether.

37_IMG_2828_37.jpg

As for getting out, well… there's a much easier way, but I'm not spilling the beans on that!

Wow, that is a lot of PPE in that place. I haven't seen that many gloves in one place since before the pandemic! For as bad as you guys think we have a problem with guns over here, you folks really need to get your arson stuff under control! :)

you folks really need to get your arson stuff under control! :)

I think this may have been the case, but it is still inconclusive according to the report.

This looks worthy enough to be used as the set of some post-apocalyptic themed movie.
Has the case been closed? Was it really arson?

Has the case been closed? Was it really arson?

Nobody knows, there has been nothing since the linked report.

loads of fun. I think I've mentioned to you before this takes me back to when I was a kid. We were always exploring abandoned factories and there was even an old power station or substation near the canal that was proper adventure to get in and out. The whole area has since been developed. We still remember though. Top post!

That's partially why I do it, reminds me of being young again.

that naughty feeling. We must never let it go.

A fortune in scrap metal just laying there!

Not sure whether rusty metal has any value.

This is trully the rust city. Looks like a bunch of Transformers went down in flames and turn to rust.

These urban explorations do require some Gladiator skills.

I ought to do some training.. really I should.. it would be useful for climbing.

Oh then you would really be unstoppable💪

Those old car photos are such a beauty.

Nice bit of light iron there! Already cleaned premium prices, the pikyes are a bit slow up there

I missed the boat.. this is what it used to look like. Maybe those pikeys have already been.

Woah. I just happened to stumble on this and I am mind blown. So much chaos and destruction I could swear this was the aftermath of an epic action movie. So many questions..

That's still a lot of trashed cars. Arson is a terrible crime where one person can cause so much damage. Interesting to see some vehicles not looking that bad. You have to wonder why the owners don't salvage some money by selling off anything salvagable. Cool pics as always. Any injuries from this one? Do you take gloves? I would think they would be essential.

I ordered some gloves but had to send them back as they didn't fit. Wearing them in summer is tough, it's been hot of late.

Were they special urbex gloves? ;) With all the broken glass and other sharp edges I'd be wary.

They were climbing gloves, with the fingers missing. I do so much snapping with the phone this is a must. They would surely help if I had some. I cut my finger last weekend, but getting injured seems to be getting regular.
