Since I have been blogging about the travels in Cambodia, let's have a look at a market there for today's MarketFriday.

The Central Market, with its yellow facade and high dome, is a prominent landmark in Phnom Penh. It's an art deco building in Cambodia's capital city. Today, I'll show you this bustling location through some photos I took there.

The market was designed by a French architect and opened in 1937 as Asia's biggest market at the time. The population of Phnom Penh has increased dramatically since it became the capital of the French protectorate of Cambodia in 1867, prompting the French to construct a large market.

The project was postponed due to the Great Depression. The construction began on a drained marshland in the central Chinatown of the time. During the wet season, there is still flooding around the market.

Four tall arch-roofed arms branch out diagonally from the centre. As a result, there are spacious hallways for plenty of stalls. Inside, you'll find dazzling jewelery, clothing, stationery, electronics, and other stuff. Shops and stands line the walkways and entrances as well, selling numerous items such as fruits, flowers, snacks, souvenirs, pans and pots...

While I was shopping for vegetables and fruits, I happened to see the receptionist from my hotel having lunch there. Her mother and she were eating at one of the bbq stands. The barbecued seafood and other delis looked delicious and appeared to be popular among the locals.

Later in the tuk-tuk ride, I also noticed a few more food stands near the market. Two young boys were having a good time transporting ice blocks from a roadside pickup truck to the market. I found it quite interesting to watch that process in motion.

Interesting stuff and market. I do like the candid photos especially the boys on the back of a vehicle. I'm curious about the brown fruit(?) with snake-like skin.

Happy #MarketFriday!

It's Snake Fruit/Salak, :) from a type of palm tree, native to Indonesia and now common around southeast Asia.
