Hey Open Mic Family

This week for the storyteller theme I had many songs I thought about playing for you guys.

I have eventually decided on a traditional old Irish song called "The Well Below The Valley"

I have never seen anyone play this song on guitar,Ive only ever seen it performed by an Irish musician called Christy Moore.

Christy played it on his Irish Bodhran drum and sang it in hauntigly beautiful tones.

Ive tried to come up with something unique here , combining percassuion, vocals and strumming.

Hopefully it has come together well and you guys enjoy listening to it.Any feed back is much appreciated.

"The Well Below the Valley"
Traditonal With New Words By Christy Moore

Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

A servent girl took up her pail
To draw spring water fae the well
Down below the valley-o
Where green grows the lilly -o
Right amoung the bushes -o

A holyman was passing by
And he asked for a drink as he was dry
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

Says she my cup is full up to the brim
And if I were to stoop I might fall in
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

Says he if your true love passed by
You’d fill him a drink if he was dry
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

She swore by grass, she swore by corn
Her true love had never been born
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

He said to her you’re swearing wrong
Six fine children you’ve had born
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

If you be a man of noble fame
You’ll tell to me the father of them
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

There’s two of them by your brother John
At the well below the valley-o
Two of them by your Uncle Don
At the well below the valley-o
Two of them by your father dear
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

If you be a man of noble fame
You’ll tell to me what did happen to them
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

There’s two of them buried beneath the tree
At the well below the valley-o
Another two buried beneath the stone
At the well below the valley-o
Two of them outside the graveyard wall
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

If you be a man of noble wealth
You’ll tell to me what will happen myself
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

You’ll be seven years a-ringing a bell
And seven years a-burning in hell
At the well below the valley-o

I’ll be seven years a-ringing a bell
May the Lord above my save my soul from hell
At the well below the valley-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o
Green grows the lily-o
Right among the bushes-o

Nice brother, I like your idea of sharing multiple songs throughout the week and really demonstrating the depth of your expertise and passion about Irish folk songs. You have always been so attentive to the weekly theme, and this one is a great example of your awareness and presence with this community. Thank you so much. Awesome song for this week's "Storyteller" theme.

Thank you for joining in and enjoying Hive Open Mic

I have a qualification in Music appreciation which came from the first year of Musical College. The idea of the music appreciation module was to pick 2 genres of music to study for around 4 months. At the end of the module the idea was that each student would do a powerpoint presentation on their chosen genres.

I picked Folk and Celtic music as my genres so I had 4 months to soak up as much knowledge as I could.Since college finished in Summer of 2020 I've kept learning about folk and celtic music but have also listened to a hell of alot of country and bluegrass this last year.

This week is probably the best time for me to tell stories and sing songs i've found along the way so yeah as long as its ok with you ill do a musical appreciation/storyteller song post each day this week it should be fun :)

Great choice of theme this week and I really enjoyed your interpretation of this song. I love the idea of sharing a different song every day and look forward to listening to them. 🤗💚
