Hive Open Mic, week 75, Longing

Dignified Maturity, isn't it something that we all desire to achieve one day? Reaching a certain age in life and being able to live decently in those last years, yes, I think that we all strive for that stage. During the years you can work for your living and choose your daily activities, hobbies and all those life details that make you happy, bur the real feeling of the old years is still not felt, of course. However, once you realize you can not do everything you want to, or go where you want to, you are in trouble if you didn't prepare yourself for that phase.

Your body is not responding anymore as before. Your mind either. You realize that you need help, to live decently. Many people, if they have the possibility, choose to spend their last years in specialized care centres for the elderly people. At least, I met many elderly people from Norway who decided on this option. To come to a care centre in Spain. They had rehabilitation, a healthy diet, personal assistance, excursions, hobbies, evenings of handicrafts, reading and evenings of music. Classical music! Culture is something they seem to value a lot, so before the covid measurements took place and washed away this whole thing and the centre, I used to have some mini-concerts for those people. For one hour, twice a week, they could enjoy classical piano pieces I played. There were also people with Alzheimer, and they seemed to be so happy while I was playing. When I saw they are receiving positively the music, I tried to engage with them, asking did they like it, what memories it brought and if there is something they would like to hear. In no time, I had my audience talking to me and asking for pieces and songs. Just a beautiful feeling, when I was coming every next time and seeing them waiting for me. Already around the piano waiting for the songs that can bring them some nice moments. They were longing for their younger days, the music they used to listen to, and that way have some worthy moments. Dignified moments in their old days.

For this occasion, Dignified Maturity, I am playing a piano piece Longing, by the composer Alec Rowley. He was an English composer, who lived in the first half of the twentieth century. Mainly composed for organ and piano, I found this nice piece as a pretty one. Hope you will enjoy too in this small longing.

💙 Thank You 💙

I waited for it
I knew it was gonna be worth it.😀
Thanks for all the work you put into this beautiful piece of music.

I am glad it was worth of it :)
Thanks for listening @jaydr !

Oh yes, the story you're sharing speaks to me. It's kind of funny, but I feel old and weak sometimes too. In fact, this week, both of my ears are doing a strange thing, and my hearing is muffled. Even my eyesight seems off. I've been pondering this whole aging phenomenon, and the what ifs of that: What if I lose my hearing? Will I still be able to sing? Listening to your song here, I know one things's for sure. I will be able to feel the music, even if I am deaf. Even if I am blind, I can still resonate with the sensations that might come to mind. Beautiful song, and it is beautiful of you to share your gifts here, and in the elderly homes, and everywhere else.

Thanks for joining in and enjoying Hive Open Mic

I really hope you are in a better shape today! I don't think it is because of aging in your case, you seem young :) At least younger than me :D

We had some great musician that were blind... also those that were deaf.. but the combination of those two would give some challenges... it would be difficult to enjoy music, although you are right, we could still somehow feel the music. I think through some vibrations and frequencies that a musical instrument can provide us.

Very nicely executed!

In Africa, I rarely saw elderlies living in care centres. They had normal lives, were independents, and people still valued what they had to say, asking them for advices and including them in social activities and daily life.
I guess it's just a matter of culture, in Europe, people are being bothered by the presence of the imminence of death, so that's why they hide our old people in "centres", and use the excuse of "they need help", but actually creating dependants, subservient individuals that will eventually regress to childlike activities, because their minds haven't been stimulated enough, in other words, slow euthanasia.

My grand mother was a complete, a..hole, and I love her for that 😁. She had a very strong personality, and always had a remark to say. The last time I saw her in an old age home, she was holding a giant tennis ball, staring at it with a strange smile, like an empty vessel. I guess the end kind of suck, so it's better to be taken care of by caretakers than being alone.

That was some food for thoughts mipiano good job

Thank you edprivat :)

Yes, I know, I actually assume that in many other parts of the world, the situation is different. Older people have been asked for advice, and that has always been the case, life experience is a precious thing. It is good when the elderly are respected, and their opinion is respected, I completely agree.

The issue of care homes, centres was not really the point of this post, just my experience that I had being a voice of music and culture nourishing there, but as you nicely followed up and derived this topic, I thank you and I will join in sharing the thoughts. I will try at least :)

My two grandmothers did not go to a nursing home, one lived with us and the other in her house, alone. They both reached a beautiful old age, and my parents would never think of a nursing home. In my country, this was not considered an appropriate move. However, what I saw in this centre was different. Probably, because it was a private one and they took special care for the well being of the patients and elderly people. As I mentioned, they had many different kind of activities, actually a pretty active lifestyle that they could receive :)
It is right now still closed, they all went back to Norway in March '20. I don't know if and when they will open again.

You are welcome :) it is a food for thoughts, you actively developed the theme and gave your view, good job actually you, not me. Thank you 😇
Now, I am going to check is there any new video from you at YT and start to write a post that I had to do this morning, but the day went crazy. :)

I have no idea how I derived, and I have to apologize for high jacking the conversation in a totally different direction! 😁

As you say, in some cases, the centre might be the solution for some people, I also know that for myself, I would prefer be free, until the end. But nothing suprising here hehehe.

Will not be done today, my laptop just decided not to give me a hand in this task. Nothing works well :/
I will have to leave it for tomorrow or some other day when it is fixed.

Hopefully there are still some curators awake hahaha.

Hopefully :D I hope to check it out tomorrow then, but I am sure, the song is a good one and you will rock with your performance, edprivat!
