Hivefest 7: opening drinks, first peek of Amsterdam

“There are probably more bicycles in this town than people.”

Hi there my fellow Hivians! Last week was amazing in Amsterdam! This was my third in-person Hivefest. The first one was in Lisbon and the next one was in Bangkok. Then the virus trapped us in virtual reality for a couple of years.

Now I finally wandered around a new city I had never visited before while meeting old friends and making new ones!

Hive as a community has gone through some tough times since the last time we met in Bangkok. We held our own against the evil of centralization and came out at the other end stronger than ever. We did not give in to greed and empty promises. We made the right choices and are better off now. Today Hivians are builders, creatives, artists, musicians, travelers, and so, so much more! Hivefest is the celebration of our vibrant community and our many creations. Be it games, useful applications, tools, improvements to make Hive the blockchain more efficient and cooler than it already is, or art and diverse, smaller communities for like-minded people. Hive means many different things to every one of us. And it is certainly not boring!

Personally, to this day, I believe that Hive saved and altered my life for the better. You see before I was quite lost. On the path of self-destruction. Hive changed it. However, it was not just Hive. It was all of you! Some of you whom I have never even met. You encouraged, hugged what little spark of life I still had left, and helped it shine brighter and grow with time. Thank you, my dear friends! Thank you for your valuable time! Thank you for everything!

And so on to the Hivefest 7! How was it? I will break it down in a few posts, or it will get too long at once.

2

I had to make it to the seven. Even if it meant booking stuff at the last minute. Which is what happened. By that time both official hotels no longer had reservations available. And so I found the Ruby Emma hotel which was only recently built. I have to say, no regrets about it. It was so cool with its industrial design features that screamed rock n roll everywhere I looked. And partially it reminded me of The Raven Hotel from Altered Carbon because of its automated self-check-in systems, how clever it was about conserving energy left and right, and its smart elevator systems. I almost felt Poe lurking about in the shadows. But perhaps, the coolest features were the guitar amps and speakers from Marshall that are available in every room, and you could go and grab a guitar from the bar and rock it out in your room! Badass!

3

And, of course, it would not be the full Amsterdam experience without bikes. Ruby Emma’s guests had them outside to borrow if needed?

4

Ruby has such a cool, dark, and moody aesthetic with a splash of color here and there. I sure hope to stay again in the future when visiting Amsterdam. Maybe by then, I will learn how to play guitar like I always wanted.

And so not long after settling in comfortably at the hotel, it was time to head out for opening drinks at the Volkshotel a few stops away by train. I was a hermit before the pandemic, I guess now I could describe myself as a hermit squared if not cubed. I was so nervous to speak with people. I needed a pep talk before setting foot in the Volkshotel lobby, but the rain did not give me much time for that. Luckily, I had @lemony-cricket to lean on as his social skills need no polishing much at all.

A glance around the lobby. There were so many familiar faces. We slipped into the small room to get our badges and immediately were greeted by the lovely @priyanarc to whom I promised the biggest hug at the Hivefest and the friendly @blind-spot who gave us a big, bright smile. They had our badges, wristbands, and goodie bags ready for us. They both were volunteers throughout the Hivefest! Thank you both so much for sacrificing your time and energy!

Not long after that, we sneaked upon the blockchain wizard himself @gtg with a huge hug! Despite me rocking my two other badges from Lisbon and Bangkok he still remembers that I skipped the most important one - Kraków! Which I am quite sad about as well, but unfortunately not always things work out in our favor. I will also have to wait an extra year to get my fivefest trophy because of that. But I hear that Poland is pretty lovely in late spring! :)

@rubencress dueling @celestal Who shot first?

We grabbed beers from the bar and a few steps forward met @celestal whom we had not seen since Bangkok and @rubencress whom I met in Tallinn years ago at a Steem meetup. Ruben had never met lem in person. They only spoke on the chain and in chats before. It was cool to see them both trying to put the person in front of them together with the conversations they had in the past and what they had imagined each other to be like. It for sure was one of the highlights of the evening.

I also remember the wonderful @crimsonclad giving us a big hug. What a great blockchain lady she is! And @arcange told us about the Hivian scanning app and contest followed by a warm embrace in the form of the proof of hug of course! Sadly, my phone was once again a complete potato, and would not work with the QR codes. I need an upgrade soon. Next year I will scan everyone!

8

A couple of beers later we met our dear friend @pharesim and the fluffy Hivefest mascot Juka and not so long after decided to explore Amsterdam at night time. I am glad we did because the next few days were too busy, or we were too tired to do any more exploring other than where the Hivefest and Roeland took us. We walked around the narrow streets, and canals, and stopped by the Red Light district, which we thought was such a cool place. Like straight out of Cyberpunk! I am glad I asked if I could take pictures there. And it turns out it is best not to out of respect. So I honored that.

I feel I am a bit behind with my postings, but I needed some time to recover and process it all. Hivians are such cool people to hang around with and I am so happy we embarked on the Hivefest train and joined this celebration once again!

That hotel you stayed in sounds rad! So many cool things in Amsterdam, definitely on of the most unique places I've experienced in Europe. Was great seeing you, M!

It was great seeing you too, celestal! You know, last summer after Ghost concert we considered traveling to Finland to a music festival for another band we love. Maybe we do that next year and then we could have our Finland meetup there! Would be lovely to meet @tarazkp as well! :)

Oh, I wish we had more time in Amsterdam. I wanna go back there!

Btw, how was your vacation? Did you enjoy Portugal? Did you catch a lot of sunshine before the winter? :)

What band and what festival? :D

Maybe we do that next year and then we could have our Finland meetup there! Would be lovely to meet @tarazkp as well! :)

That would be cool :)

I got covid from Amsterdam so I was in a flu for couple days. But I did get some sunshine from the beach. Next time we'll take a better look at Lisbon without a flu, haha.

It was The Birthday Massacre at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, in Suvilahti, Helsinki. Unfortunately, I got busy with repairs at home and that plan fell through.

Oh noes! You too! Must have ruined your holidays :( I am so sorry to hear that. But are you two okay now? No lasting effects?

I also was one of the unlucky ones to get covid after fest. Still a weakling after all that.

The Birthday Massacre at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, in Suvilahti, Helsinki.

I talked to @crimsonclad at HiveFest and she also wanted to go to Tuska but couldn't make it. Next year we all go to Tuska and have a meetup! :D

But are you two okay now? No lasting effects?

I'm fully recovered, but taking it easy because the heart infection risk. @rrusina got covid from me though, much milder this time (her second covid), although she has a bit of an annoying ear infection as an sequelae.

I also was one of the unlucky ones to get covid after fest. Still a weakling after all that.

Dang, you too. Get well soon.

I have been so happy to see you again after so many years since BKK.
Looking forward to meeting you again at the next HiveFest. Hugs 🤗 🌹

Likewise! It was so wonderful seeing everyone again face to face! And hugging! Hivians are the best people and I always go back home with the best memories! Thank you for all that you do for our community and people in Ukraine! Until next year! Can't wait! :)

Song of the Grey:

- "Bicycle Race" - Queen

Would it be appropriate to call Amsterdam bicycle city? I am not sure but I think no other place in world competes with it as much? I wish we in Latvia would have awesome bicycle routes everywhere. Unfortunately, in some places it is not even possible to add them without serious infrastructural changes. And we have no money for it either. Also I am pretty sure even in some places where we do have them, they get constantly abused by asshole drivers.

Is it better in Poland in that regard?

I am not sure but I think no other place in world competes with it as much?

Well....

"Nine Million Bicycles" (in Beijing) by Katie Melua

While Amsterdam is one of its kind, I don't think I like the idea of bike as a replacement of public transport. Having a good infrastructure for bikes is one thing (and we are improving in that matter), but making bikes a PITA to all the other participants isn't something that I'd like to see in my city :-)

That's part of the world I still would like to see some day :)

Yea, it is understandable.

Here thigs are also improving, but not fast enough. It is still pretty dangerous to go places if one choses cycling as means for transportation.

I told you, you are such a sweet person I have ever met...I thought you were staying in Volkshotel... Great photographs by the way...

Aww thank you Priyan! You are very sweet also! I know you have been through some really tough times this year and carry a lot of pain still, but I wish you to heal and become stronger than ever. You will get there even if at times now you can't see it. I hope you do though.

I am still recovering and trying to catch up with all the wonderful posts from Hivefest and hey, in one of your posts photos reminds me of Vincent van Gogh painting Starry Night! The reflection of the buildings in the river. You have a great eye for photography as well!

Thank you so much. I am doing good, recovering slowly and after Hivefest, I am feeling much better than before. Pain is still there but it is mild now...

in one of your posts photos reminds me of Vincent van Gogh painting Starry Night!

That's a big compliment for me because I admire Gogh's Starry Night a lot. Amsterdam is really amazing and the night view is completely different and magical as well. I wish you a quick recovery and I hope you will visit Amsterdam again...

Seeing and talking to you again was great M! Seeing Lem on the other hand, was surely something I've been looking forward to (for 4-5 years haha). We finally shared a beer together! And o man... haha! I'm happy that we could talk on a deeper level. See you next year? ^^

Ahaha, a beer? I am not sure how many beers it actually was by the end! But you two collected a few kinds :) It was great to talk to you and that you enjoy deeper conversations. I appreciate that as a quality in people a lot. Lem and I both do, though I should not speak for him ;)

That would be so awesome! I heard a rumor that it might travel to South America possibly. How cool would that be?

Wow you hotel sounds and looks super cool actually. Using Marshalls in the room? Oke Volkshotel could learn something from that for sure. You ended up in a good place!

(Just a check? We had beer at beersaturday right in the second place? You had rumcoke or something like that? Im not sure now if that was you guys)

Hey Karin! Yea, and the funny thing was that it was actually one of the cheapest hotels in the area at the time left also. I mean, there were some that were cheaper, but they were no where near as cool. And I actually did not know that they would have guitar amps and guitar available, just thought there would be their speakers or something.

Yep, it was us :) Normally I don't mind beer and perhaps I even should have tried some of them as I believe they had their own craft beer there, but when I got there I craved something different. It was such a cool place though. And I hope to go back to Amsterdam soon as I wish I had more time to explore and also try the local cuisine.

Well local cuisine dont get your hopes up too high on Dutch food honestly as we tend to borrow all cuisine from other countries haha.

But indeed it was short and intense and nearly not enough time to see enough. It feels that even as a Dutchy I should have known more about the city and everthing there haha.

I get it being beer tired. For me winterdrink espresso martini and red wine are on the way again :))

I remember how excited and happy you were when we first saw you. It instantly recharged my social battery :D
Priyan cant stop talking about how much she enjoyed your company and I am a little jealous now haha

guitar amps and speakers from Marshall that are available in every room

Now that is some next level hotel room experience. wow!

I always wanted to takes pictures of the cyberpunk streets, but never did for the same reasons. It still is a major culture shock to me, though.

I am the one who took selfie with her, not you :P

Ahaha, we shall take many more selfies next year also!

For sure...

Aww yay! Hivefest has been such a source of joy for me each time I have attended, it is impossible not to get excited and smile ear to ear each time. But meeting you two awesome people instantly took my insecurities, nervousness away! So thank you again for your welcoming, positive vibes!

Hehe, yea. I was pleasantly surprised myself. I thought only the more expensive rooms would have those.

It is such an interesting and unique part of the city and the Amsterdam culture. Even though I did recently learn that the government is trying to change it and move it away from the city center. And while I understand why they would want to do that, it would also change something that's quite unique about the city and I dunno how I feel about it. I am glad I got to see it as it has been for years.

I can imagine how special each fest is...especially after being to one myself, I can personally appreciate all the excitement.

So thank you again for your welcoming, positive vibes!

On the contrary, you made us feel very comfortable. Thank you. I thought I was out of line for being so excited, but seeing you made me feel at home.

I dunno how I feel about it

I am the same about many such things. On one hand, yes I understand why they want to do that. On the other hand, it is going to affect the income of the workers and who knows how that ends up for them and what they have to go through when income is low. Then again, the center is bustling with all sorts of business because people do come around here to see the street and spend their money on other things as well. Another thing I am not how to feel about are the coffeeshops. There is a discussion going on to stop letting tourists (at some level) from availing the coffeeshops's services. Which is like...a majority of the tourists come here for the coffeeshops, no?

Yea, nope! No lines for excitement and being yourselves! No limits! I think that is the best way to go about most things in life anyway :)

Agreed, it would almost be like shooting themselves in a foot. Many businesses would suffer with the change, maybe even go under. Unless they make an extensive plan how to assure no one walks away completely bankrupt or in financial ruin. I bet those other businesses do not like the idea either. It could cause a massive ripple effect.

Ahaha, the coffeeshop situation slightly reminds me of tourist situation in Japan. They don't even let foreign tourists in (due to pandemic) if they don't book tours with travel agencies while all their businesses are waiting and waiting for tourists to come. As a result their economy is taking a big hit. And they did it themselves.

It must be some silly politics? Image problems? Yea, once again one can wonder if they realize what effects their own plans would have later on xD

Japan is on the top of my bucketlist. I am obsessed with Japan. My bestfriend moved their almost a decade ago and I am yet to go there after years of invitations. But I have never heard of the foreign tourists thing. Must be done by now, since the pandemic is gone? Of course, the damage is done. But I still think Japan has soooo much to offer. I'm always kinda jealous of anyone whos been to Japan. Can't wait till I go there myself :P

Woah, and like the same day I think? I got another update on Japan. They finally will allow tourists from all around the world now. Finally! Starting October. Hopefully they will stop with all the useless restrictions permanently.

Yea, same here! Also South Korea! :)

That's a apleasant update :) I was very surprised by the restrictions on foreigners and it also never occurred to me since my bestfriend always uploaded stories from restaurants and bars in Japan. But then again, maybe he is already considered a local?

It was great seeing you again @m31 and this time I could properly day hello to @lemony-cricket

Thank you @livinguktaiwan! Likewise, and great presentation at Hivefest btw! I believe that was the first one for OCD? Well represented and put together :)

Thanks @m31, I'm not sure maybe it was the first for OCD? You're actually one of the OG OCDers, and helped lay a great foundation for today🙂

Yes, Hive is everything, you shared your Hive_fest experience, thanks a lot. It seems that the moments were very good

I am glad you enjoyed the post! Hivefest is always such a great time. 100% recommend attending! Roeland and his team know what they are doing and they are doing it because they love Hive and wish for us to have the celebration of our victories and creativity. Join us next year? :)

Thanks, next year will be a lot of fun

Wow your photographs are awesome. And by the way your post is very nice. Keep it up

Aww thank you! Brings me joy to think that you and others enjoyed them! It takes me quite a bit of time to put these together. Yea, there will be more for sure! :)
