Memories of a Lost Fulani Dagger from Chad

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

Hello dear Bloggers and Hivers ! Today we left for a new place, still in the same region of the south of France, but more in altitude. At first I thought we would find more freshness and less thirsty vegetation. This was not the case and I was quite shocked. We met up with some of my family again, especially my brother, with whom we imagined that if several such dry summers were to occur in a row, the place where we were would perhaps turn into a desert.

I think we're probably exaggerating a bit, but it's still worrying...

In the house, I came across this very special object... and the two events were intertwined. It was the dagger that a Fulani herder lost in the Zah Soo National Park in Chad. It was discovered after a chase between park rangers and poachers, of which the herder was one. The story was told to me by one of the park officials.

I find this dagger really fascinating, like a totemic and truly symbolic object, so full of stories and experiences, not to mention its intrinsic beauty !

The first time I came into contact with this object, I dreamt about it the following night... I have written two novels and a few short stories and the story linked to this dagger seemed so romantic that it could completely integrate a future narrative :)

I inspected this dagger, its scabbard and its decorations for you and the more I went into detail, the more I began to imagine the life and context of this Fulani shepherd...

One of the first details that jumped out at me was the inside of the sheath. You can see: "1 LITRE". This one is made from an old plastic bottle and this alone is really revealing of the ingenuity and resourcefulness, the common sense that seems to be lacking sometimes (often) in the West. I know it's probably due to the lack of means, but we've become used to having everything available at once and I'm convinced that the most beautiful things are also built from constraints... The most realistic and pragmatic too !

The simply worked blade seduced me with this symbolic fish motif engraved near the handle. I still wonder what this one means... Is it for luck or prosperity ? I will do some research and add my findings.

The handle is made of a fairly heavy and dense wood and the metal attachments are beautiful and well crafted. I wondered if the knife was not much older than the sheath... Everything leads me to believe that it is an object that is passed between family members and that the scabbard was made by the last owner.

Attached to the scabbard is this small container all dressed up with beads, some glass and some plastic. Again, this is a reuse and it seems to be a bottle of pharmacy liquid.

This is the part that seems to me the most tragic or at least sad, because when I briefly looked inside, there seemed to be ashes, but I'm not entirely sure... There were other things as well, but I only looked inside and I would never have ventured to pour the contents.

I then thought that they must be important things for the owner and again I thought about giving them back. It would obviously be complicated to implement, especially as the knife is not directly in my "possession" at the moment - it's not in my house - but it would also be really romantic to find its original owner and return it to him.

What do you think ?

It is really an object that intrigued me a lot, as much by its beauty as by the evocative power of its origins... I must say that since the first time I saw it more than a year ago, it is not the first time I have thought about it !

I'd be delighted to hear your impressions and feelings and I hope you enjoyed and were interested in this story ! This was my first contribution to this community where I have already enjoyed many articles and other texts :)

Take care and see you soon !

On arrive à déceler : "1 LITRE".

Just stunning. I'm sure the original owner must have been so sad to lose it

Many times I long for at least a little collapse of the west so we can remember our resourcefulness. I've said this to you before I think.

I'd love to learn a bit of knotwork like this, strikes me as quite handy!

What a beautiful object.

Yes, it's really an incredible object !

I have really thought about it many, many times :) I love it as much as I imagine the owner must have been devastated by its loss. In my opinion he must also be more resilient to these things than a Westerner who, I agree with you, deserves a good life-saving crisis !

Yes, all this craft knowledge that we have lost, but I am sure that if necessary, we will be able to rediscover it... Always an optimist ^^

Have a nice day, I hope you're well !

Such an interesting find… beautiful. And very ingenious what they used.
Sorry to hear the area is also very dry. It all is changing and we can see it.
Have a great evening!

Yes, it is a kind of object sublimated with a mystical aura..!

Definitely, I hope it won't rain too much longer !

Beautiful day to you dear :)
