Being the Best of you

My warmest greetings to every one of you who makes a stop to share with us part of your life, something that experience taught you and you do not want it to be “Gone with the Wind”.

Getting the details in life

Once a sexagenarian or over the 50s, we may ponder, ask ourselves a question about, What or Who am I, right now? What Have I done with my life? Have I got to where I thought I wanted to? Or my days just drifted away? Being what I am or I have become “Am I the Best of Whatever I am?”.

Once at that age, I guess it does not really matter. What is important is that whatever we have become, done with our lives, has made us feel happy, content, so that we could continuing living without regret. I guess I could say that I am at that age, stage in my life. When being a child we are somehow eager to discover what is around us, we try things by ourselves, regardless if the world is falling or ending in front of us, we just do not pay attention to that, we are so busy, immersed in learning, trying, discovering it, that we just do not care if its lifetime is getting to an end. I guess we may say. “That is adult stuff”. In this way we go on to our teens’ and early youth years. At this stage of life our interests change. Knowing we have to enroute our lives to guarantee a promising future, we are, in essence, more fun-loving, at high school, at university or whatever we would decide to study or do. Here we are building, brick by brick, the “Home” we wish to be in, though when getting to a “Y” diverting road, we may just take that one that seems more entertaining, without realizing that it could be taking us away from our goals, facing challenges we never thought of, simply for a moment of pleasure, as it were.

Diverting road. What way should I take?

It is not till we get over the thirties that we begin to slow down, paying more attention to details surrounding us, what life or nature is gifting us with. It is probably the stage of life when we appreciate a walk with our spouse to fill the eyes of our hearts with the look of a nice mountain, the sky, visiting our parents’ home more frequently, or staying at home with the family, more than anything else.

I would say “Be The Best of Whatever you are” as the writer Douglas Malloch (1877 – 1938) shares with us in his poem by that name. Here we are encouraged to do those things we have been called upon, to the best of our ability at every moment in our life.

A successful life should be measured by the love people remember you with, not by the world’s standards.

“If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill,
Be a scrub in the valley — but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;
Be a bush if you can't be a tree.

If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway happier make;
If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass —
But the liveliest bass in the lake!

We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew,
There's something for all of us here,
There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do,
And the task you must do is the near.

If you can't be a highway then just be a trail,
If you can't be the sun be a star;
It isn't by size that you win or you fail —
Be the best of whatever you are!"
