[ESP-ENG] Hablemos de Nuestros Abuelos // Let's Talk about Our Grandparents

in Family & Friends2 years ago
Greetings friends, I hope you are well, today I come to participate in the initiative "Let's talk about our Grandparents" presented in the Family&Friends Community together with @hivedamor and with the support of @eddiespino, the community of @aliento and @theycallmedan, to help the grandparents of the Asilo de Ancianos Santo Domingo, it seems to me a very noble gesture to support these grandparents who live there.

Grandparents for me is synonymous with love, dedication, pampering, etc.; I only knew my grandmothers, I did not have the joy of having my grandparents present, my maternal grandfather died when my mother was still a child and my paternal grandfather was not present in my father's life, I met him when I was 17 years old and then I saw him on two more occasions; Today I will talk about my maternal grandmother, my Doña Maria Garcia, with whom I spent pleasant moments of my childhood.

My grandmother Maria, I do not have many pictures of her, because at that time we did not have smart phones, only one or two cameras with a roll of film was seen around, at home we did not have, by the way my grandmother did not allow herself to be photographed, she was a tall lady, thin, with gray and long hair, her character was strange, because she was strong, I would say that she was somewhat quarrelsome, but at the same time she was loving and pampering; I was lucky enough to live next to her house, so my siblings and I did not need a babysitter, she took care of us while my mother worked.

When my older brother and I started school, my grandmother would go for seasons to a plot of land that she had in a rural area of the city, as I needed it, but as soon as there were vacations, my mother would take me and leave me there with her, they were wonderful days, without electricity or drinking water, but I loved being in that place, I can say without fear of being wrong that the best moments of my childhood were spent there with my grandmother, I close my eyes and I can imagine her cooking on the kerosene stove, sweeping the yard or carrying the water to bathe me, there was something that intrigued me a lot and it was that my grandmother carried the bucket full of water on her head, without holding it with her hands and the water did not spill.
It was my grandmother who taught me to play cards, from her I also learned to cook and many more things, I still remember those horror stories she told us, then I had to sleep with her because panic took over me, but the next day again I wanted to listen to those stories, there are so many moments that were recorded in my memory and in my heart and there they will remain forever.

My grandmother was a very energetic woman, she was never lazy, she was very helpful, if someone needed her help, she kindly offered her hand, sadly she lost her sight when she was still young, a hard blow that depressed her for a while, but she got over it quickly, using a cane she moved around the house and even went to our house too, she washed her clothes, did the dishes, she didn't like to be doing nothing, because she was used to fend for herself.

My grandmother passed away 19 years ago and almost every day there is something that makes me remember her, her sayings come out in some conversation, and of course, if she was an admirable woman, for me the best grandmother in the world!
