Ah 2023, a new opportunity to start all over again. Many people see the beginning of the year in this way, as a way to start from scratch, to get down to work again, a clean slate.

Now for me it's like closing a cycle and to be honest, it's a good thing this year is over. For me it has been one of the worst of my life, if not the worst, so thank God it's over....

Regarding my blog, I haven't posted in hive for about a month, mostly because of lack of internet, since a light pole was damaged here and it was a problem to fix it again, but here I am again, to tell you a little bit about everything I've been doing during all this time without internet. I won't comment everything in this post, I'll go in parts. For now I will tell you a little bit about my family.

portada.jpg

Oh, the family! That group of people who love each other so much (some exceptions apply) and who are always there when you need them (or only during certain times of the year).

Although I always tell you that I live alone, the truth is that my family is not that far away from me. You see, they live in the same city as I do, just in a different house. Specifically in my grandmother's house. There lives my aunt, my mom, my two uncles and, of course, my grandmother. From time to time my aunt goes to visit along with her husband and her daughter, that is, my cousin.

We always use to share, so this year would be no exception. You see, I have a few relatives abroad, among them my dad and my brother. They sent us some pictures of how they prepared a traditional dish from here in Venezuela, known as hallacas. When they sent those pictures to my mom (who I bought a new phone for, I'll tell you more about that later), they also said they were going to send us money to make hallacas too.

IMG-20221210-WA0024.jpgIMG-20221210-WA0025.jpg

In fact, the next day they had already sent us and immediately the family went out to buy the ingredients, which just for these days have gone up in price like you have no idea.

Well, hallacas are made up of different ingredients. Basically it is a layer of dough wrapped in banana leaves, this layer of dough is filled with beef, chicken and pork stew, also with olives, raisins and other ingredients that vary from place to place. The point is, that the stew to prepare the hallacas was sometimes made by my dad or my mom, who have a good hand for cooking, but this year the stew was prepared by yours truly.

Although lately I do not share many preparations on my blog, the truth is that I cook very well, so my mom invited me to my grandmother's house so I could be the one to prepare the stew and share it with the family. I hadn't visited them for a long time, so going this time, accompanied by food, was something very nice.

IMG-20221223-WA0015.jpgIMG-20221223-WA0014.jpg

I was sharing with grandma and my uncle, whom I recently brought from Colombia due to health problems. He is with us and accompanied us in the kitchen while we were preparing all the ingredients.

I usually cook alone, in silence, so it was quite an interesting change to cook with so much noise, conversations, shouting from my cousin who never gets tired and burnt arepas, because if I have a peculiarity, it is that I always, but always, burn some arepa, in this case, I burnt the two I was going to eat...

F in the comments for this pair of burnt arepas.

IMG-20221220-WA0048.jpegIMG-20221222-WA0011.jpeg

Well, once the stew was ready, it was my turn to rest and all the other members of the family got to work and my aunts began to put things together.

IMG-20221223-WA0013.jpg

A baker friend of mine was selling ham bread this year, so when I read his ad in a whatsapp status, I ordered him a few and he brought them over in a matter of 15 minutes. To be honest with you, that was the first ham bread I had eaten this December.

All day we were at grandma's house assembling and preparing the hallacas. As for me, besides preparing the stew, I had to cook them. We made them over an open fire, or wood fire, so they had a very interesting flavor, but I can tell you that I burned my pants, my hands and even the hair on my arm from the fire, quite an experience that day... besides, my clothes were left for a few days with the typical smell of firewood that always remains when you cook like this...

IMG-20221222-WA0024.jpeg

We finished at approximately 3 in the morning. My aunts couldn't hold out so I stayed with my mom and my cousin tying up the rest of the hallacas that were missing. I told my mom to go to sleep and I would finish the rest and at about 5 in the morning, I finished cooking everything by myself, in silence and peace...

IMG-20221223-WA0029.jpg

I slept for about 3 hours, because I woke up again at 8 o'clock. With the family we tried the hallacas and some spicy buns that I had prepared, because I like spicy food. Then, almost at 12 noon I said goodbye to the family and thanked them for the invitation. My mother, as she always does, gave me a couple of bags full of hallacas and bollos to keep at home and eat them throughout the month. As of this writing, I had finished them all.

Later that day, I invited a friend over for dinner, so we ate the hallacas that I prepared with the family, a salad that I prepared and ham bread that I bought from my friend. A couple of days that, to be honest, I enjoyed a lot with family, friends and food...

I have not been able to read you too much lately, so I would like to know what you have been doing these days, tell me in the comments, as you know I will be happy to read you. With nothing more to add, I'll say goodbye then....

See you next time!

Wow! Those foods look yummy.

The one being wrapped with banana leaves, is it from cassava? That looks delicious. Here in our country, it is called bodbod(from cassava )

Oh interesting, I just looked up Bodbod, but no, it is a dough made of cornmeal that is filled with a stew of meat, chicken and pork. It is very tasty, as I said it is a traditional Venezuelan recipe hehe. I imagine that the Bodbod must be very tasty too.

So many delicious foods. I'd like to have that one wrapped with banana leaves.

Hi! You can do it, it's not made with things that are unique to my country. I'm sure where you live you can find the ingredients. This is known here as "Hallacas".

I see. We make them with sticky rice which we consider as native cakes.
