Leg Godt (Lego)

When it comes to looking after my body, I like to think of the Danish term 'Leg Godt', which translates as 'play well'. Playing well means communicating amicably and in harmony; Listening and responding. I associate this with the way I listen to my body; whether it be physical or emotional. Connectively, I like the thought of play, and I see it positively. Play brings happy emotions and thoughts. It makes me nostalgic for happy childhood days when the world was simple and playing was my priority. I created my happiness then, by making my toys, and I still apply that same principle today, which is one of the reasons I believe in yoga. Yoga helps me to heal from within. #SelfPlay.
Self-Play (Yoga) keeps me balanced and able to see the humourous side of things and keep my emotions in check. It's like it regulates my instincts which enables me to be pragmatic with arising situations. It's therapeutic and good for my well-being.

For us ageing folks, we are extremely grateful for each passing day, and we hope that life will be good for us. Yet, the fact is that we already have all the tools we need to repair our bodies from within. Distractions sometimes, and other limitations prevent me from fitting my practice into my busy schedule. This means that I'm not actively nurturing my limbs, muscles, joints, and ligaments - the fundamental things that allow me the independence to move and do the things that make me happy. So, it was no surprise that I felt very out of shape today, but I never sweat it when I do.

Building the body

We need to build and strengthen the muscles in our bodies for flexibility and longevity, and for carrying out basic body functions through movement. However, I believe in holistic health, so I make sure that my mind and body are connected and working coherently. Otherwise, this could be my vice; physical activity put my mind in a good place, yet, my mind needs to be in a good place for my body to benefit from physical activities. So, today instead of stressing about my lapse in exercise and fitness, I accepted, and I spent the time consulting and examining my body and muscles to figure out just where my emphasis should be, where I should expect limitations and just reassurance that everything will work and loosen up from getting back into the practice of stretching and flexing my muscles frequently.

When you feel an unpleasant sensation in your body, do you take the time to figure out where it is coming from?
Do you examine your body to see where limits are in movement?

I think it's natural for us to want to curl up and rest when we feel muscular pain, don't you?

It sounds crazy, but when you feel pain in your muscles, joints, or nerves, it's best to stretch and let the blood circulate as circulation of blood helps to pump blood to the heart and gives you more energy to continue to be active.

My body loves movement, and if I'm inactive for longer than 20 minutes, I ache. I have been moored up for some time at a particular location, which means that I have not been walking along the towpaths of the canals and operating locks, (strenuous manual work), so I have been feeling some tightness in my muscles, especially my shoulders (an old frozen shoulder problem that recurs from inactivity), and my knees; that's a problematic area for me.
I've always had a bad knee, but the good knee went bad too...but what I find is that when I feel the pain, if I stretch it and breathe through the pain, I get good relief.
Without a nagging pain, I'm able to do normal activities such as walking, which helps to strengthen the muscles in the feet and legs.

These were all the thoughts that kept playing in my head. They were self-assurance needed to remind me that it's never too late to get back into a routine, even if small steps and a slow start are what is required.

What are your thoughts on Leg Godt; playing well, and listening to your body?
How does pain affect your emotional state of mind and thoughts?
What are some of your natural ways of eliminating and alleviating pain?

Just the mere fact that the sun came to, made me utilise the time by this beautiful floating pontoon to gather my thoughts on my physical and emotional wellbeing...something that I think is a prerequisite state needed before embarking on any fitness routine.

I've shared this topic as "thoughts" because so many people stress about the level of fitness and lack of exercise, and jump headfirst without really thinking about the purpose, mission, or vision of what they hope to achieve, or the reason why it is important, and how it fits into their personal needs and routines. I hope that if you are faced with similar thoughts plaguing your mind, this will help you to put things into perspective.

Wow.... This is more like a challenge to me that I need to work out more often and stretch these muscles of mine on a daily basis. Truth be told whenever I'm having any muscular pain, all I do is sit still till it goes away on its own without knowing I've been doing myself more harm than good and so reading this I've been enlightened and would try to shake the pain off next time it occurs. Thanks for sharing 🥰.

Yes, even if you're not able to do rigorous exercises or weightlifting, I would strongly recommend stretching. Stretching feels awkward at first because you might not realise how tight (curled) up the body is. Take it slowly and observe the sensations that you feel. Each day stretch any particular area that pains a little bit more. Breathe through the pain slowly and apply pressure to areas that might pain.

I'm happy that this brought some enlightenment. I learned that from my chiropractor at a time when a was suffering from a health condition that caused chronic pain.

Thanks for stopping by, have a nice week:)))

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate. Do have a lovely week too💙

I've done yoga a few times and really enjoyed it. It's a great way to connect the mind to the body. I haven't done it in a long time though. I agree that movement and exercise are much better for proactively eliminating pain, than being sedentary. When I sit around for long periods of time my legs and knees (I have issues with my knees also) hurt a lot. When I do a lot of walking my knees are much better - for some reason. You would think that the opposite would be better - resting the knees but lots of sitting makes them really bad. I remember reading that movement lubricates your joints and walking is one of the best things you can do because almost your entire body moves when you walk. Mindfulness is also supposed to be very good for pain. There is a specific therapy that was designed for people with chronic and severe pain that is solely based on mindfulness (MCBT - mindfulness based cognitive therapy).

Yeah, I applied that remedy of movement for my back muscle aches, but only just realised that 'movement' has the same effect on my knees. My right knee feels rusty (tempts me to spray WD-40 on it 🤣), but I noticed that after a long day of walking (in comfy shoes, of course), the pain subsides, and my knee feels stronger, and flexibility is increased.
Yes, mindfulness is as powerful, as breathing. Combining the two methodologically can work wonders.
I hope your knee problem is nothing that will require surgery. Mine is patellar tendonitis (jumper's knee) so I think with the care I'll be fine. However, you must find a highly trained Yoga Teacher if you take classes. I attended classes with a 'rookie' teacher, who made me do something that caused new damage, which I'm yet to figure out exactly.

Thanks for dropping by, have a SUPER week:)))

My knee issues aren't serious so I wont need surgery anytime soon as far as I know. Actually, I just looked up what patellar tendonitis is and it sounds very much like what I am experiencing. I don't know for sure but it seems to come and go. I generally get a quick pain right in that particular tendon when I take off running, especially after sitting a long time without stretching, or if I try to jump. I try to stretch more and strengthen the muscles around the knee and avoid sudden movements. Those seem to help a lot.

Yes, my pain comes and goes too. Same, sudden movement, climbing downstairs, and after sitting or sleeping is when I feel it most.
I save all my aerobic exercises for the pool. Aqua aerobics does wonders for my knees and cardio. I particularly like doing exercises in water because it's low impact. I could jog and jump around in a pool for one hour and feel no pain during, or after. However, if I suddenly jump or run on a hard surface, I'll be out of action for a few weeks, from crippling pain.
Have you ever tried pool exercises (not just swimming, but full aerobics)?
It was my girlfriend from The Netherlands who had recommended that I try pool exercises when she came to visit me in the Philippines, and I've never looked back. Toning happens fast, and I particularly like that you gain long muscles instead of short muscles (compared to cycling or weightlifting)😁

I haven't tried water aerobics but I can imagine that it would be a great way to exercise. My knees have never been in "crippling pain" yet so I'm thinking my issue is minor at this point. Still, I'll keep water exercises in mind for sure.

Stretching is very important indeed even before playing a sport, running or any kind of physical activity.

Though I don't practice yoga, the idea of Harmonizing body and mind appeals to me.

This may be completely unrelated but I read somewhere that Lego in Latin means to collect or gather. I can imagine stretching jogging, enjoying nature, and gathering/ collecting my thoughts.

Yes, it's a good practice to stretch before and after any exercise to make sure that the body is properly warmed up and conditioned.

That sure makes sense that Lego in Latin could mean collect or gather... But I think of Leg Godt = play well...and lego is the shortening for leg godt...and now I'm sounding like I'm gonna ask a riddle 🤣😂🤣

Yeah, you have nice gardens there is Japan, so I hope you do get out, even if it's just light stretches...the body needs it.

Thanks for stopping by...all good wishes for a great week ahead:)))

Lol. Have a great week @millycf1976

Thank you 😁

Water aerobics is the best for the knees! I recommended that for my sister-in-law so that she could build up the muscle before her knee surgery. The stronger she was going in, the less PT she would need. She has had two bad knees since she was 20 but, it took twenty years of pain for her to do it.

I have a frozen shoulder that comes and goes, but, it is not a real problem.

I love your healthy attitude about pain and yoga and the relief it brings. I just realized how little I had been exercising, but, kept up stretching. I got busy and it was easy to skip! What? I never skip. It keeps me more honest!

Great post and I really love how you take good care of your body.

Water aerobics is the best!!!...and it's good for all ages and all fitness levels. I miss the pool for that. I am afraid to think what my knees would be like if I didn't have the opportunity to strengthen them in the pool.

Same here:)

It's good that you have the discipline to do your stretches even if you don't get to do other exercises.

Thank you for your compliment, and it's nice of you to stop by 😊
Have a lovely day:)))

Uhhhg... This old trucker would snap like a pretzel stick. Lmao.

Hahaha! ... inactivity can make you feel that. Just a little more each day 😁
Some days I feel like I could reach for a WD-40, so I know what you mean 😂

Is that what Yoga means? 😮
My body is so inflexible now that I get injured unnecessarily. I was a flexible kid. Not sure when it all went wrong 😑
