As of this Friday, in Brazil it will be mandatory to wear face masks in airports and flights, following an order imposed by health authorities. Brazil has been one of the countries most affected by the pandemic in the world, with almost 690 thousand deaths and more than 35 million infections to date. Since last August, the use of masks ceased to be mandatory in the South American country, but now it will be used again due to "current epidemiological data, which indicate an increase in the number of cases of covid-19 in the Brazilian population". According to the National Council of Health Secretariats (Conass), in the first twenty days of November the number of infections exceeded 95 thousand, with an increase of 292% in relation to the previous month.

*** Much of Ukraine, including its capital, Kiev, remained without electricity on Thursday after the latest Russian bombardment of energy infrastructure, at a time when the temperature has already reached zero degrees Celsius. Millions of people suffered from these blackouts over the past few weeks, as the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the coming winter may be "life-threatening" for Ukrainians. "The situation with electricity continues to be very difficult in almost all regions," said Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski. "However, we gradually leave blackouts behind, every hour we return power to new consumers," he added. According to the Ukrainian Energy Ministry, the shelling left "the vast majority of users" in the country, which had some 40 million inhabitants before the Russian invasion began on February 24, without electricity.

*** A team of scientists from France, Russia and Germany managed to revive seven viruses that remained in the Siberian permafrost, one of which is 48,500 years old, and warned that climate change, due to rising temperatures, could lead to the release of these microbes against which humans have no immunity. During the study, which was published Nov. 10 on the bioRxiv preprint server and has yet to be verified by other academics, they first took samples from permafrost in Siberia near the mouth of the Lena River (Russia), as well as on the Kamchatka Peninsula. After analyzing the samples, the scientists were able to preliminarily characterize 13 viruses and revive seven of them that were then cultured for viral genome sequencing. As a result, they established that the majority (4) of the viruses belong to the giant genus 'Pandoravirus' and had not been discovered until now, while three others are from the families 'Mimiviridae' and 'Pithoviridae'. All of them infect amoebae and are the largest of these pathogens.
