The Human Mind: Wishful Thinking... or Unseen and Unexplainable Connections?

Synchronicity can be a strange and wonderful thing!

Sometimes I reflect on the sad fact that I seem to have grown so rooted in the practical and functional world that I have almost forgotten about the magic of the unseen realms. I'm by no means a “woo-woo” person, but I've had enough unusual experiences I have never been able to explain that I am open to at least the possibility that there is lots going on around us that we just can't see or touch or feel yet.

One of these unseen things is the connection I occasionally have felt — and feel — with a very small handful of specific people. Even though we may be half a world apart, it is as if we know what the other is doing and we're somehow living parallel lives.

The scientist and skeptic in me tries to dismiss some of these things as being the result of the Law of Extremely Large Numbers which postulates that in a large enough sample size something extremely unlikely is actually extremely likely to happen.

In other words, we focus on the extraordinary.

It is part of human nature to look for patterns even where none exist. In most cases, I'm willing to concede that we're basically working with wishful thinking. But there is a difference between two people wanting a sandwich at the same time and thinking that's "pretty amazing," and two people wanting a bacon and avocado sandwich with thinly sliced red onion, sea salt ruffle chips, and a particular type of white wine from a particular vineyard, at the same time.

And then there's the unlikely activity of dream sharing. I have been dream journaling and engaging in arm chair level dream analysis for almost 30 years so I do remember a lot of my dreams as well as a lot of details from my dreams.

Again it's one thing to talk to a friend and going "Oh gee, we both dreamt of a barn and we both dreamt of a cow." Sure that's not particularly rare. But when you can describe layer upon layer of rather strange and esoteric details that are identical, and even meet the other person within your dream, then we start to enter territory that can't fully be explained.

It reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend of mine who is a professor of physics at MIT concerning the occurrence of unlikely events. My friend , whom I'll just call “the Flying Dutchman,” is a hardcore scientist who also studies the tarot, psychic phenomena, and the messages from dreams just for the fun of it.

He visited here a few years back and we had a lovely lunch talking about unusual and esoteric things. One of the things we talked about is the way people who “see things” or “hear things” or “hear voices” or claim to be “psychic” are often perceived by the scientific community as being slightly crazy if not entirely nuts. But then he mused on the fact that you have all these people who see, hear or intuit things, and who are arguably nuts, but the only problem is that you end up with so many people who are nuts in exactly the same way. His point being that if they were truly nuts, the way in which they were nuts would be fairly arbitrary.

It made more sense when we were talking in person...

The sad thing, though, is that these possible "unseen realms" are not something we get to talk about very often. You can't just message someone you don't really know and say "I saw you in a dream, and buying that house is a bad idea" because we've been conditioned to characterize something like that as "creepy", all the way from talking about a house they've never told anyone about, to dreaming about a stranger in potentially intimate ways.

That is nuts, right? Or IS it?

I'm running on relatively little sleep at the moment, so this is probably a little incoherent.

Thanks for reading, and have a wonderful weekend!

When I was young, like in my teenage years and very early twenties, if I remembered my dream, something in it seemed to happen the way I dreamed. It was never exactly like I dreamed it, but either something remarkable would happen to the person that was in it or what I dreamed happened, would happen to someone else I knew or either be in the news. I thought it was weird, but it happened too many times for it not to be noticeable.

One time when I worked in the office in the kitchen at the hospital, my grandmother had accidentally taken her pills wrong and was in for a few days. My Dad would come daily, several times a day to see her. During that time, my younger brother who was with a Christian praise and worship group was up north with them. I had a dream about him that woke me early one morning in a panic. That morning, when I saw my Dad I asked him if he had heard from my brother and he said no. I told him I had a dream about him and would be happy to see him back home safely. During that day, my parents get a call for permission for him to be treated at a hospital. It seems the folks he was staying with lived on a lake and been skiing, something he already knew how to do, but at the end of his ride, he had been going to lean on his slalom ski sideways and spray the folks on the dock, but misjudged the distance, hit the dock and his head and passed out in the water ! Thankfully, he was ok.

The next morning, when my Dad came by the hospital, he said that he thought it was something that my brother was in trouble and I was the only one he could get through too. My Dad was not at all "woo woo".... not even a tinge, so I thought it was really something that he said that to me.

My older sister told me one time if I dreamed something about her, don't tell her. LOL !!

Eventually I didn't remember so many dreams. I think I was still dreaming as much, I just rarely remembered them. As I've gotten older now, I remember more of them again, but so far, in my older years, I have not really related them to the real.

I do believe there is a connective consciousness and I believe there are many things going on all around that we may never understand in this earthly life. I don't know how to purposely hone that or if we are supposed too. I'm open about it all though.

Thanks for sharing that story @jacey.boldart, that's quite something! There are definitely things we just can't fathom, at the current stage of humanity's development. I do believe that in time science will be able to explain what's really going on.

Here's another one for you: My wife is very — for lack of a better word — psychic and one morning as we got up she told me that she had a vague dream (content wise) in which someone kept saying "all hell is breaking loose on the Lower East Side!" over and over. When I turned on the small TV in the kitchen to get the morning news, the image that came on was the burning North Tower of the WTC, a couple of minutes after the first plane hit. That morning was 9/11/2001... and, of course, it happened on "the Lower East Side."

Pure chance? Maybe... except, she has been having premonitions like this all her life, and always in remarkably accurate ways.

Wow ! That's really interesting !... and sometimes scary I bet ! It always makes me wonder how some folks are so naturally tuned in and others don't seem to be. For now I know there is no known answer for that.

Sometimes someone I know will get on my mind for no apparent reason, friend or family and when they do, I always wonder if they are in trouble. Lots of folks don't share about the hard things in their personal lives, so many times I am not sure. Of course I pray for them, but I also try to make contact, call if I can or email or messenger, to make sure they know I am here if they need me. I don't tell it to them like that, but sometimes when in a hard place, people feel really alone, so just in case, I want to make sure they know they are not. I had a girlfriend years back that said it was uncanny how that every time she seemed to be going through something hard, I would call her, even if we had not seen each other in a very long time. So many times I don't really know if it's anything at all, but that really made me wonder. In the mean time, I keep doing what I'm doing !

The sad thing, though, is that these possible "unseen realms" are not something we get to talk about very often

You need to read more hive or leo posts! ..There's nothing but new abundancy mindsets over old fashioned scarcity mindsets (never mind that the whole of nature runs on this scarcity principle - we have 0's and 1's now...).

It seems that many people have a shortcut to these unseen realms. And, oh.... they just love to talk about them !

Ah yes, "scarcity." Scarcity is what happens when a swarm of starlings descend on one of our cherry trees and leave it bare. In that moment, cherries are suddenly "scarce."

0's and 1's are interesting, though... used to spend a good bit of time exploring the "frontier" of 0's and 1's vis-a-vis the meaning of the word "here," when taken in the context of virtual communities.

"I am on Hive!"

...and where exactly is this "on," pray tell?

Yeah, Occam's razor can explain a lot of things, but when the levels of similarity are SOO high and SOO multi-leveled, one has to wonder what really IS the simplest explanation?

Wow, I'd love to hear you tell some stories about specific experiences, I love hearing them ... and I LOVE when synchronicity happens!

Some things are very difficult to explain. "Glitches in the matrix?" Coincidence?

If you have the time, let me point you to a post from not too long ago, in which I do cover a couple of pretty specific events from dreams (one, in particular) that pretty much defy explanation by rational science.

This stuff fascinates me, because it's a "frontier" most people would just as well avoid< because it tends to be very fluid and unpredictable... and the logical mind doesn't like that.

Whenever I hear that phrase now, I'll always think of Dark.

From Netflix show Dark

Thanks for sharing your post, I loved reading it! I'm with you, I believe that there are many things out there that we don't yet understand (like microwaves) which we will learn about, as long as we keep an open mind. The terrain which is covered by so-called "Rational science" will continue to expand and cover parts which were previously labeled as "pseudo-science".

I like to be open to things that I do not understand, because I think we try too hard to make sense of things instead of just living in the moment and enjoying it. I do believe some people are more intuitive than others and that I think is because most of us have been conditioned to not trust our instincts. Great topic and thanks for sharing your thoughts on it xx

I don't know @trucklife-family, I think we are all pretty intuitive... it's in our DNA from way back; we sense without knowing which wild animals are dangerous; but yes... I agree that many have been conditioned to NOT trust their intuition... which is a shame, because it tends to be right, more often than not.

Excelente publicación. En mi caso soy muy intuitiva y sueño mucho con personas que les ocurre algo y a los días me llega la noticia de que esa persona le pasó algún evento.
