The best post of the day

What exactly are you trying to accomplish here?

Yesterday, I posted about my internet connection failing and that I would go to work today to deliver a client training, to make sure the connection was stable. Funnily, after spending the day prepping and then starting the evening delivery due to time zone differences, their VPN failed and we couldn't hold the session - so now, after already organizing to take the day off tomorrow to recoup some hours, instead I will attempt to deliver the training again.

Not the end of the world, but annoying, because I also wrote about the challenges of schedules being shifted and a set of contractors that we weren't expecting for two weeks called today and said, we will be there in 20 minutes. Well, the work actually will now start tomorrow, but that means that after I finally got home from work, I had to completely clear about 50 metres of thick and diversified hedge, which took me four hours and it still isn't done, so will have to continue on tomorrow (that was an organized day off) before I deliver.

This is my life and probably isn't interesting to you - but it is interesting to me - because this is my life. However, while I know that this isn't necessarily interesting, I try to make it so.

What people often don't consider is that regardless of topic, we can be interested in all kinds of things and the more we invest ourselves into the story, the more interesting it becomes. Because of this, we can find values in our interest that won't exist if we are disinterested.

For example, the picture above was taken by my neighbor from on top of his roof and looks across to the nearby lake, which you can see in the background. The house in the center of the picture belongs to my friends, the house on the left edge has been poorly maintained and will likely be bulldozed and on the right edge, you can look into my bedroom window - well, it will be my bedroom window 60 years after this picture was taken, just as my neighbor was completing his own house next door with his wife, the house they still live in today.

This is pretty cool to see for me at least, but perhaps it is kind of interesting for you also - even though not in the same way as it is for me. Maybe it makes you think of your own house's history, perhaps where you grew up or maybe where you would spend your summers - but it likely brings something to mind and what comes to your mind, is interesting to you.

You make a post interesting or not based upon how you think about it. Some people find interesting things everywhere, some people don't. Whether it is down to lack of openness, imagination, curiosity or some other factor, it doesn't really matter - our interest or boredom is born from ourselves, not in the subjects we consume.

Having said that, I do have a goal each day with what I deliver and that is to deliver what is interesting to me in a way that it will be at least somewhat interesting to you. The reason is that while not pandering to the audience, I think it is pretty cool to be able to deliver what is interesting to me in a way that is interesting to you - and even though you might not be directly interested in the topic, the way it is delivered provides something of value to you to the point that perhaps tomorrow, you will stop by and have another read of something you aren't interested in, because, you find it interesting.

I know, that kind of doesn't make sense. However, what I have found over the years and through the thousands of posts I have created and the tens of thousands of comments I have received and replied to, is that people are largely "topic agnostic" when it comes to what they find interesting, although the topics they are knowledgeable or invested into in some way, such as Hive content, will see greater engagement. But in general, if people are open to discussion, they will comment on any topic they find interesting, which could be based on many things, but also affected by personal relationships, as creating relationships is a type of social investment and builds social capital.

As said, I have a goal each day to develop, create and deliver something interesting to the community - I also look to create "the best post" of the day and even though this isn't actually the objective goal, I want to be able to submit at least one thing a day that people feel they got something out of, that the time spent reading and commenting was worth it to them in some way. I don't always hit my marks, but as a content creator, I want to be on your priority list of "must reads" each day - after all, I am authoring these for your benefit as well as mine.

And again, this is something that I hope people really consider as a fantastically cool part of Hive, is that we are all able to do something that benefits us, by doing something that benefits the community too - and for those who are either lucky or curious enough, it is possible to make it not only valuable, but also interesting for everyone concerned.

What is often the issue in this equation is again us, because often we want to do what is interesting for us, but don't think much about how we deliver that to the audience in a way that is interesting for them. This isn't about compromise, it is about creativity - and if you are actually serious about presenting your interests to an audience and bringing value, you will find ways to make it interesting for the audience. It might not be the way you would want it delivered yourself, but you are already indulging in the subject you have chosen, so be inclusive in the value generation and consider your audience too.

Now, while this might be a completely uninteresting post for you, someone else might take a few lines from here and consider them in relation to what is interesting to them - it could be that they will onboard some ideas and approach their own posts differently or, it could be that they start rummaging through draws to find their own old photos from the past to reconnect with - it doesn't really matter - but somewhere in these 1300 words, most people with some kind of imagination will find something interesting enough to think upon and run with.

The main goal of my posts each day is not only to make my interests somehow interesting for you, or to add value to your life - but when you walk away and go on about your day, you are just a fraction better off, a little stronger, faster and more able to cope with your world. I do this each day because I believe that if we can each continually improve just a little bit, we can improve a lot over time and a lot of people improving makes for a community that can solve large issues together.

The landscape has changed a great deal in the 60 years since the photo above was taken, but one thing has remained unchanged - the area is full of people doing their best in the world they have as the people they are, trying to make ends meet, raise decent children and live a life that interests them. There will be varied outcomes house to house, but everyone is making an attempt.

This wasn't likely the best post of the day on Hive, or maybe not even my best post of the day - but tomorrow I will try again. There is always tomorrow, but we have to do it today.

Sometimes we also need to see change through the eyes and vision of another person. We become stale if we don't move and grow. I am sure there are some static pieces of that picture from 60 years ago that are still there, but I would think with out having a current picture to compare that there has been a lot of changes to the area.

The roads and the driveways would be the first thing I think a person would take note of, then an increase in the number of cars parked at a house. A filling in of what looks like an empty lot across the street. Yeah, just an ordinary everyday snippet of life, some will find something interesting, or thought provoking, such as I wonder what it looks like today?

Besides the houses and the lake, not too much. Funnily, even if I tried to take the same picture it would look completely different and the house in the middle would be blocked by a massive birch growing in our yard. Eventually it will have to be cut down (too close to the house), so perhaps I will try to get a similar picture then :)

What is nice, is that the empty lot is still there and is is a playground - the lake can't be seen because of a large stand of trees on the banks. It is funny how "bare" it looked 60 years ago.

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

I am from an underdeveloped part of India, so when I see your posts, and you share your life, I really find it interesting.

It may be possible that someone living in America, or UK, is used to this kind of lifestyle, and landscape, so they find it uninteresting.

I usually read thought process, money and lifestyle blogs. And occasionally blogs about hive, crypto.

For example, offgridlife is living on a beach on Canada. And Canada is my favourite country in the world. So, whatever he shares, I find it interesting.

Galenkp has intersting story telling skills, so I love his stories. Creativemary, riverflows has good thought process, and that's why I read their blogs.

Thoough it's not like I find 100% of all your or anyone else's blogs interesting.

Like some of your blogs are too lengthy, some doesn't make any meaning for me. And I think it should be like that.

I find 90% of your work quite interesting. So, I am your consistent reader.

Nobody can produce the same level of work, especially in terms of creativity. So, some of your blogs are really good, some are okay and some are though provoking.

And that's what I try to do in my blogs too. Some are bad, some are really bad, and some are good.

I think everyone should remember this while creating and reading blogs on hive. That you can't produce the same level of quality every day. Sometimes you will out do yourself, sometimes you will suck🙃

Like you said, trying your best to do create your best work daily is the way to go.

I think you might be too young for the reference, but when I was a kid there were "choose your own adventure" books, which were books with multiple story lines that you could "play" while reading with dice and decisions. I never read one, but some of my friends did.

The reason I didn't read them was because my entire life even then was a "choose your own adventure", as I would find a small thread of interest somewhere and pull on it. Many lead nowhere interesting, some lead to fantastic places that I still enjoy today.

I think this is at least part of the reason I write the way I do and with the length I do - I don't want to tell you what I am thinking and get you to buy into my ideas, I want you to find a little thread and pull, to see where it leads you.

Sometimes you will out do yourself, sometimes you will suck🙃

This is definitely something that we all should remember, including at the times we are criticizing the work of others. =)

I want you to find a little thread and pull, to see where it leads you.

Wow, that's really a good way to think.

I agree with your every word! In fact, sometimes the same issue can be addressed by two people and the reader will read the one that is most attractive to him. People will say: but if I wrote about the same thing and nobody read me, well, it's the way, the turns you use, the way you communicate, how you make a detail a reason for reflection. Because there are styles that trap, ways of saying things. Writing is an art, @tarazkp, and you handle that art very well. Have a good night!

I have a friend who is a vine expert (wine too) who specializes in helping vineyards improve their product - to hear him talk about his job is incredible - not because he is an expert, because he loves what he does. Listening to anyone talk about what they really love doing is attractive.

Aw! It was a great post! I really enjoyed it. You always write something interesting it seems to me.

Thanks - I think I am a person that gets some level of satisfaction from doing something useful for others. I am trying to think if it has ever been different, but I don't think so.

people are largely "topic agnostic" when it comes to what they find interesting

I think people come for a topic and if they're around for long enough might eventually get more interested in the person XD

But, only if they have an expectation of the topic.

  • The best post of the day
  • The value drop off on human attraction
  • Hitting the wall and the art of decentralization
  • On ya bike, girl
  • Lost connections and broken timelines

Perhaps I should think about my titles as I am not sure they are very descriptive of the content. Maybe people say, "what the hell is this gonna be" and visit. ;D

I like your titles XP

Thanks!!!

Oh... it said titles. Never mind .... :D

lol, I opened this thinking you were sharing the best posts you read on hive.

This wasn't likely the best post of the day on Hive, or maybe not even my best post of the day - but tomorrow I will try again. There is always tomorrow, but we have to do it today.

As they say in the classics continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection. not sure Mark Twain actually said that as the internet tends to make its own truths as time goes on. but regardless its still a very true statement.

continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection

Since this is the internet - it was me who originally said this :)

I think a lot of people put off being better and then one day wake up and realize the best of them is behind them and they left most of themselves undiscovered.

Have had this revelation quite recently and have recently thrown myself into learning new things. I am ashamed about how much drifting through life I've done, but that is done and it time to sort my shit out :)

I am glad that you have realised this in yourself and have made the decision to move :)

I have to do a lot of the same - once I sort this house stuff out :D

So true. This pandemic seems to be making that even worse. Seems everything is on hold for a lot of people.

I have noticed that there is a split in the lockdown mentality - some people are waiting for things to go back to normal, some are actively looking at what else they can do. Around here, a lot of people have picked up outdoor hobbies and especially looking into their gardens.

Me encanta, excelente reflexión. Gracias por compartir!

This is my life and probably isn't interesting to you - but it is interesting to me - because this is my life.

These words made me smile, I don't know why, I imagined myself in your place, at the keyboard, all exhausted, but wanting to create ...

... "must reads"

Ooh, you have already succeeded in this. For me, your articles have long been like this. The only thing that I am not commenting on is poetry, which I cannot perceive because of the language barrier.

There is always tomorrow, but we have to do it today.
