Grain, Pain, Bikes, Trouble - Sunday

in Homesteading3 years ago

After the past couple of weeks my body is super sore which meant yesterday was a bit more mellow. It started out with the heaviest task, the grain that I picked up on Saturday that still needed to be unloaded from the trailer. After hooking it up and backing into the garden I spread 3 barrels around in the areas I had missed before. The other 3 barrels I backed into the sheep pen grain area and shoveled them out. The birds were trying to get into the garden to eat the grain but after some flying sticks they moved away and made a run for the grain I dumped in the pen.

With J riding his bike so well now I decided to pull our bikes out of the shed. @stryeyz's bike is still in good condition and just needed the tires inflated and it is good to go. My bike on the other hand has seen better days. The front tire and tube are garbage but the rear is still in good shape and the tube seems to hold air. The chain has a couple spots that were rusted tight but after breaking them loose the chain tracks okay. I have to soak the chain in oil though to try and loosen it up. I have no clue on the forks, they seem like they may be solid now instead of cushioning, they will be the hardest and costliest part to deal with.

I changed out the seat as my old one was falling apart. The seat post bracket on my bike is so much stronger than the standard seat attachment in my hand.

I got it back together and now just need the tire as I have a tube already. Over the years of the bike getting moved and tossed around one of the bar ends snapped off and took a bit of the handle bar with it. I will have to get a new handle bar and the shifter rubber is like mush so they will need updating. Not sure if it is worth it to repair this bike or to just look into a newer ride. I think for now I will just get the tire and see how it goes, I'll be fine without the bar end.

R got himself in heaps of trouble. First thing I found was that he had taken a bunch of 4x4 tiles that I had in a box and he had thrown them out and down the hill towards the creek. They were spread out on the hill, in the trees, a few broke from the impact with rocks, and about half remained in the box. It took 3 separate times of me making him go keep picking them up before they were back where they belonged.

The second thing was when I went to go check the eggs in to coop I walked in to find all the duck eggs, about 12, were cracked open into their feeder. Luckily there was no feed in the trough but he had filled the bottom of it with egg. It's one thing for me to give him eggs to smash in the pen as we do that with older eggs, but not the fresh ones, and not in a wooden box meant for dry feed.

The joys of being 4 years old I guess...

Today R has school, then I pickup our grocery order, I have to keep on tilling now as I only have 12 days to get the gardens all planted as my goal is to be done by May 1st, irrigation gets turned on, and I will be seeing if I can get the boys sluicing our creek this afternoon - at least a little bit so they get the idea of where and how to go about it on our property. With that I have found the NW Gold Prospecting Association which meets in Rathdrum, due east of our farm in Idaho. Likely going to join as they are the closest club to us and have a place near Murray/Eagle Idaho the club outings are held at.

I put a lot of money into updating my bike last year. I think it was worth the expense, but I had a good foundation to build on. I don't know enough about your bike to say whether fixing it or buying a new model from Trek/Specialized/whatever is the better option.

That prospecting club sounds fun. I wonder whether I can manage to join, too.

My frame is good but the forks are my concern. For now I will limp it along until I decide to fork out the money for the new one or this one gives up.

https://nwgoldprospectors.org/ $20/yr single, $30/family for yearly membership. I'm going to send in mine this week. They have an outing and claim tour May 15th for their next meeting.
