Late December monochromes!

I’m back at the keyboard for a post-holiday Hive blog! Hope you all had a good celebration, if you celebrate. Things were really good here. @guthrie had a pretty over the top Christmas last year and I assured him this year wasn’t going to be as extravagant. I lied. He was pretty spoiled, but I can’t help myself. I’m a good gift giver. His favorite was a like new Nintendo DSi. He has become obsessed with retro gaming consoles and this was what he’s been asking for for months. In addition to a morning of gifts, we watched the James Webb space telescope launch, so overall, a great day!

Every now and then, I’ll turn to my black and white photography. They don’t get as much attention as the color images I share, but are strong and timeless, so once a month or so, I’ll do a post on Hive that celebrates some select monochromes. This first image is from a model I worked with several times in both LA, and NYC. Her name is Molly Morrison and from 2015 through 2018, we had some incredible collaborations together. We took this image at a cabin in New Jersey and it was our last time working together. I’m hoping we can reconnect in 2022.

My dear friend Ella, also known as Miss Victory Violet. She is a New Zealand based blogger and we first shot together at Viva Las Vegas in 2016. She went on to be crowned the winner of the annual pinup pageant […just hours later] and she became an overnight rockabilly sensation. This photo was taken during our second shoot together at sunrise at The Valley of Fire. In 2019, I traveled and stayed with her in Auckland, NZ and to this day, I consider her one of my closest friends throughout my time in the pinup scene.

Speaking of close friends, someone that has been with my since almost the beginning. I met Kaio Wilker in Boston in 2009. He hired me for a set of portraits after shamelessly soliciting myself on ModelMayhem. We became friends immediately and have continued to work together in New York and this photo taken in 2019 in Seattle where he now lives with his husband. We caught up after a decade of friendship and did this shoot outside of the MarQueen hotel. One of my favorites photos and stunning as a black and white.

I do love taking the time to post these monochromes as they capture a pulp, noir romance that you just can’t get in color photography. I look forward to sharing another set of these black and white images in January. For tonight, I’m going to relax and read a few chapters of a book on my new Kindle Paperwhite and decompress while the snow falls here in Minneapolis. @ghostfish and I have a writer’s retreat coming up this week, so I need to pack and creatively prepare for the journey up north to Isabella, MN. Good night!

All 3 pictures are art, but the second one left me speechless. wooo!!!!!

I have come to realise that taking black and white pictures, they are always nice

It's really awesome to see you share some photos of male models. We get really familiar with your other work and it gets easy to forget how multifaceted you are! I hope you have an awesome time at your writers retreat and it gives you everything you are looking for.
