The monsters fulfill a purpose

I live in a country with a long history of crime, armed violence and corruption. These tendencies have been in decline for the past few years among common citizens (although I'm probably the only one of my compatriots that you'll see saying this for now), but it hasn't been an immediate or simple process. Venezuela still houses a diffuse camarilla of mobsters and drug traffickers that relatively control the little that's left of the State and who have done their very best to cause us great collective injury during the past twenty years. With their tyranny and abuses, they've forced millions to leave this land, caused the death of thousands and practically razed the totality of the country's public industries and institutions. Now their power has waned by their own actions, people don't pay them any mind and life goes on unstoppable, ever stronger and brighter.

Is Venezuela a special case? Not really, in the scheme of human history there have been a great many examples of populations rising gloriously from the ashes of autocracies far more brutal than ours, of armed conflict and natural disasters. From our individual, human perspective, with all of our moral codes and legal structures, these processes are frequently called unjust, cruel and terrible. From a broader point of view, however, they're no more than evolutionary events, large-scale cleansings of ancestral debts that restrict our growth as a society and species. Venezuela was defined by several important lies under whose carpets the horrors of Conquest, Colony and the first independent governments were swept. This regime that scourged us for two decades was the expression taken by all of that unrecognized filth. All of the rancor and resentment that we'd been denying for generations came back literally with a vengeance to restore a balance that had been lost.

This is the function of predators, diseases and cataclysms in Nature: they control the populations, they bring out all darkness into the light, destroy the sense of security and drain the energy. As manifestations of Fear, the purpose of oppressors and murderers is to show us the Shadow, to make us feel the pain that we've been trying to hide so that we can understand the falsehood of that story of wellbeing and peace that we've believed, ripping us apart from our bubbles of ignorance so that we can see, without protections, the work of our precursors. Reality is a Story told in consensus and villains and monsters are also our creation. We need them as much as the heroes, because without them we can't heal the injuries of the past, nor expand beyond our protected spaces. Once their mission is accomplished, all of these jailors of the ego inevitably fall as has happened to the regime here, even if it's not apparent yet for most. The Tyrant is, paradoxically, the Herald of Truth.

Los monstruos cumplen un propósito

Vivo en un país con una larga historia de crimen, violencia armada y corrupción. Estas tendencias se encuentran en declive desde hace algunos años entre los ciudadanos comunes (aunque probablemente soy el único de mis compatriotas que leerán diciendo tal cosa por ahora), pero no ha sido un proceso inmediato ni sencillo. Venezuela aún mantiene a una camarilla difusa de mafiosos y narcotraficantes que controlan relativamente lo poco que queda del Estado y que han hecho su mayor esfuerzo para causarnos gran injuria colectiva durante los últimos veinte años. Con su tiranía y sus abusos, han forzado a millones a dejar esta tierra, causado la muerte de miles y arrasado con prácticamente la totalidad de las industrias e instituciones públicas del país. Ahora su poder se ha desvanecido por sus propias acciones, la gente no les presta atención y la vida continúa indetenible, cada vez más fuerte y luminosa.

¿Es Venezuela un caso especial? No realmente, en el esquema de la historia humana han habido muchísimos ejemplos de poblaciones elevándose gloriosamente de las cenizas de autocracias bastante más brutales que la nuestra, de conflicto armado y desastres naturales. Desde nuestra perspectiva individual y humana, con todos nuestros códigos morales y estructuras legales, estos procesos con frecuencia son denominados injustos, crueles y terribles. Desde un punto de vista más amplio, sin embargo, no son más que eventos evolutivos, limpiezas a gran escala de deudas ancestrales que restrigen nuestro crecimiento como sociedad y especie. Venezuela estuvo definida por varias mentiras importantes bajo cuyas alfombras se barrieron los horrores de la Conquista, la Colonia y los primeros gobiernos independientes. Este régimen que nos azotó por dos décadas fue la expresión que toda esa suciedad no reconocida tomó. Todo el rencor y el resentimiento que habíamos estado negando por generaciones nos vino literalmente con venganza a reestablecer un balance que se había perdido.

Esta es la función de los depredadores, las enfermedades y los cataclismos en la Naturaleza: controlan las poblaciones, sacan a la luz todo lo oscuro, destruyen la seguridad y drenan la energía. Como manifestaciones del Miedo, el propósito de opresores y asesinos es monstrarnos la Sombra, hacernos sentir el dolor que hemos intentado ocultar para que comprendamos la falsedad de esa historia de bienestar y paz que nos hemos creído, sacándonos de nuestras burbujas de ignorancia para que podamos ver, sin protecciones, la obra de nuestros precursores. La Realidad es una Historia contada en conseso y los villanos y monstruos son también nuestra creación. Los necesitamos tanto como a los héroes, pues sin ellos no podemos sanarnos de las injurias del pasado, ni expandirnos más allá de nuestros espacios protegidos. Una vez su misión está cumplida, todos estos carceleros del ego caen indefectiblemente como le ha ocurrido al régimen acá aunque no sea aparente aún para la mayoría. El Tirano es, paradójicamente, el Heraldo de la Verdad.
