Garden Journal: A Challenge To Encourage Engagement About Gardening, Self Sufficiency, And Passion for Plants

in Natural Medicine3 years ago

For a long time on HIVE, @simplymike ran a fantastic garden challenge. The idea was that once a month, bloggers would share details of their gardens, showing us what they're growing, how they're growing it, or even what their struggles might be. From Africa to Belgium, Canada to Australia, England to France, gardeners posted stories, photos and their trials and tribulations. It's always been one of my favourite challenges on HIVE, particularly as I'm a keen gardener myself, believing in it's benefits for mental health, the environment and for our physical bodies.

A few days ago, I chatted to @ravensking13 about his own fledgling garden and I told him my idea to resurrect this challenge whilst @simplymike is having a break. She's happy for me to do this and will be more than welcome to take it back off me should she have the headspace to continue it. I hope she even might share what's happening in her own edible and medicinal garden on the other side of the world from me.

I'm not sure how sane I am starting this challenge headed into my winter, as you all go excitedly into Spring, but I do love to see the happiness of northern hemisphere gardens when I'm freezing down in Victoria. Don't worry though - I live in a climate where food grows all winter, so no doubht I'll be sharing too.

What to Share

Do you have a herb garden, a vegetable patch, a flower garden or even grow vegetables on your window sill? Maybe you have a grow room under lights, a community garden or you are growing roses. It doesn't matter what kind of garden it is - we are all different in our tastes! Diversity is one of the interesting things about this challenge.

Try to use at least 300 words describing your garden - what's worked well? what's failed? You might like to make your post more appealing with a personal story or even a garden recipe. You might like to focus on only one plant or the whole garden.

You might also like to 'theme' your post around environmental values, abundance, community, health, sustainability or any other related theme.

A Few Guidelines

  • Reblog this post
  • Please use the tag #naturalmedicine or post in the Natural Medicine community. @minismallholding creates the Lotus Garden newsletter and this makes it easier for her to find you and reward you.
  • We're happy for you to post in other communities but don't forget to use the tag #GARDENJOURNAL in addition to any others you might use.
  • Please use original photos and make sure they aren't blurry!
  • No plagiarism
  • Please don't use the cover image or refer to the contest as your 'title' - refer to the contest at the end eg 'This post is in response to the Garden Journal challenge, hosted by @riverflows, that you can find [here](link). It should stand alone as a worthy post so outsiders would enjoy it.
  • Please check the tag during the week and comment on other people's posts. ENGAGEMENT IS KEY.
  • POST THE LINK TO YOUR POST UNDER THIS CHALLENGE POST!

Prizes

Each month, I'll give out a total of 30 HIVE from my personal account, and 300 LOTUS. I'll distribute this how I see fit - if I don't get a lot of entries, or they aren't at a good standard we expect on HIVE, I might give away less - but I'm usually pretty generous and may give away more!

As Natural Medicine supports this kind of content, we'll also be upvoting, reblogging and even tipping the best ones, and submitting them to curation projects for further support.

The due date will be the 15th of March.

Above all, have fun, and happy gardening!

Welcoming any sponsors that might like to contribute to this challenge!

With Love,

I must remember to cheek the #naturalmedicine tag too, then. #gardening and #homesteading would be good tags as well.

Gosh yes absolutely! It's the #gardenjournal tag as well. Yes, I'll edit the post to make sure these tags are included.

Posted on NaturalMedicine.io

I always use the "gardening" and "homesteading" tags when I write a garden related post. I was using the "gardenjournal" tag also last fall for the last of my garden posts for the year. It's still too early in the year for me to write about my gardening efforts, I haven't started my gardens yet.

Awesome! I try to catch up with gardening and homesteading tags but it's hard! I'll always check the #gardenjournal tag around the 1st - 2nd week when I run the challenge (give or take, around the 7th to 15th ish, think end of the first week of the month) so if you forget I'll find it, or pop it under my garden journal challenge post for me to see. We're definitely in that 'inbetween' time aren't we?

In between winter and seed starting season...but that's coming in a few weeks. 😀

LOL coincidence! I was just writing a post about our progress!

https://peakd.com/hive-120078/@edprivat/this-month-on-the-farm-1

Funnily enough I was thinking about @simplymike and the garden journal just yesterday (watching the mulberries in our new garden coming to ripeness) and I wondered what had happened to this challenge.

Appreciating your tenacity and keeping the gardening energy going. Planning an entry. Reblogged.

Fabulous! It was such a great challenge it'd be a shame to let it go.

I am very happy that this challenge is back. I wish @riverflows much success for rescuing it.

Good to see the challenge back, but... well, you'll see on my Mid-March update... https://peakd.com/hive-114308/@viking-ventures/looking-forward-to-spring-mid-march-garden-update-homesteading

Hint: this is outside my balcony door right now...

So happy you picked this up for I missed the Garden Journal challenge and seeing what was happening in other peoples gardens.

I just saw this today but I got my entry together at: https://peakd.com/hive-120078/@porters/spring-is-in-the-air-march-garden-journal

Such a lovely challenge! I hope my post is still on time... took me a bit longer than thought to write and upload all the pics. Have a beautiful day!

Yes you're good to go - another 24 hours before I wrap it up and boy I'm glad you got yours in!

I made it! Though now I need to try to find the time later to check in on the other posts. :)

What a wonderful idea! I can't wait to hear about gardening tips and tricks, the sensual experience of dirt between one's fingers and the tasty foods to come from all of it. I experienced an organic banana in my smoothie the other day, far from local and it happens to be an ingredient that I often buy organic. However, it was the poster child for how sustainable farming with heirloom varieties can taste so goooood!

The organic blueberries and raspberries did not take away from the sweet flavour, but I am positive that the banana hit the home run in this case.

Oooh, yum. It's getting cold for smoothie here but still..yum..

I remember this challenge well. I think its a wonderful idea to resurrect it.
"I'm not sure how sane I am starting this challenge headed into my winter"
I always enjoy reading posts about your garden and I'm sure you will have plenty to showcase, even heading into winter.
Xx

Drat! I could have used the house plant one, as there's nothing much right now.

Wait! We have warm temps coming this week, I plan to be out in the gardens some, so maybe....

Oh you definitely should!

We had some really nice weather last week and I started making comments about getting lulled into the false hopes of spring... Good thing... We got 10 inches of white stuff on Tuesday and are expecting another 4-8 tomorrow! I've ordered my grow-lights though, so maybe... lol

I really enjoy these garden updates as well. Sometimes I participate, but 2 out of 3 times I have been known to forget at least one of the listed requirements, such as returning to comment or include a tag. Oh well! It always gets good engagement, which matters more to me. Garden wisdom that works is as good as gold.

I'm pretty forgiving, just drop link here and you'll pass I promise.. I know you!

Ah you're so sweet. Thanks @riverflows.

I would like to join!

Please do!

I can't thank you enough for keeping this alive 💜
I have been thinking about it a lot, especially since I have been sowing my first seeds and planting my first seedlings.
I hope I can find the energy to participate, or at least follow up about what's going on in other people's gardens.
It's not worth a lot these days, but I'll be giving my vote to all participants. pretty sure I'll be able to find the energy to do at least that 😁

You're the best!

Miss you @simplymike! But so happy to see @riverflows carrying the torch for now.

I love your new tag: 'plant based fitness trainer' 😂

Oh I'm so glad, I was so worried you'd think I was stepping on your toes or jumping on your grave or something haha, thanks for your blessing and go ahead, I hope you can join in if you're feeling okay!

It's awesome to see all those familiar names in the comments section.
This is gonna be a great resurrection! Thanks again 😘

Yay! I look forward to this happening again

resteemed!
xD
I also was thinking so many times about contributing something to it. but I visit the garden at my countryside place only a few times in the summer time, so most of the time I simply have nothing to come up with. Hope eventually I will bring something intresting, I do have some gardening activity from time to time :D
in other words: great idea to resurrect it, it is really a needed initiative at the blockchain!

Thanks so much, I think so too! Thanks for your support!

I really miss this initiative. I participated a few times in the one that @simplymike did, and in fact, I won the last edition; and they know well that I love my back garden and my internal patio, and this is the opportunity to show you part of my plants; although right now it is not a good time, since it is a dry season. I will be participating. Thank you for resurrecting this activity. A big hug @riverflows.

I can't wait to read your post!

It sounds like a WONDERFUL challenge! I'm sure there will be so many entries because Naturalmedicine People are very talented and implicated, with a really beautiful thinking on life and nature. Even though I'm not so active and present as I would love to be, I know this is the place where I find myself. Everyone can say here we find valuable information on what naturalmedicine brings for us all: a holistic approach on health of the human body, sould and spirit, in all its formes! Glad to be part of this beautiful family! :)

Aw, we love it when you have time to drop in!

Thank you! I feel welcomed every time!

Thank you for the new challenge. I will be here again.

Fabulous, always love your posts.

Glad to see this challenge coming back!
However, my gardening is a little on hold at the moment... 10 inches of snow on Tuesday and another 4-8 tomorrow! But I've ordered my grow lights, so... ;)

I would love to post in this group in this future but I first need my own garden. I'm too restless of all the moving around and house sitting. I think most people who garden a lot don't spend a lot of time online but then again it might be a nice way of sharing knowledge and interact.

xx

Well, I do both - garden and online! Balance is needed. When I used to move around alot I'd still plant stuff. kinda obsessed by it. I fully expect you to start when you move into your mansion!

Sounds like a healthy obsession to me and yes, I'm looking forward to a future garden of my own.

I am delighted about this. Good on you for taking it on. Like you, we are heading into winter and The Husband is already on the winter plantings. Let's see what happens between now and 15th. RL is rather and pleasantly hectic at the moment.

I love it, I have a mini garden of medicinal plants in my house, I would like to write about it, can I also include the benefits of the plants?

great!! i was thinking about participating by the end of the month but i saw the due date was march 15th so i'l start preparing my post for next month challenge!! I''m really excited ;) I love this kind of activities, i don't know where was I last year that i did not take part in that.

Awesome
New garden challenge starts in a week or so... you are lovely and early haha

Wow! sounds awesome, I am just writing a blog post about my garden at this moment, though I doubt I would be able to finish it today, a couple of other things to be done. Let me see. I will have this page boo marked to ensure I follow all the rules, they seem pretty much straight to me.
