Mindful Living: Finding Balance in Chaotic and Stressful Times

Most people would probably agree that these times in which we live are not "normal", by any figment of the imagination.

Yes, I'm sure we could get into a lengthy semantic debate over the meaning of "normal," but that's not the intention behind this post!

Here at the White Light Express HQ we often get emails from people expressing their anxieties and frustrations, and asking "How does a person stay GROUNDED and CENTERED in the middle of all this?"

It's understandable enough...

On one hand, it's very easy to fall down the rabbit hole of eternally being caught in the buffeting winds of news stories, personal videos, conspiracy theories and try to process every little detail fed to us about Covid, the economy, protests and riots, international tensions and people freaking out about their lives.

On the other hand, some folks prefer to just turn it all off, as if simply by ignoring all the chaos of the world, it will simply cease to exist... all by itself. Alas, it will not! And if you ignore it all for too long, it may come calling at your doorstep in unpleasant and unexpected ways.

One of the things that's wise to keep in mind is that there are things in life we have no control over, and then there are some that we have at least a little control over.

Part of the reason we often feel anxious and restless is that it seems like the world is out of control; that is, we have no control over all the horrible and scary things that are happening, and we feel powerless to do anything about them.

Thus, a good way to reduce our stress levels can be to simply sit down and think about what in our lives we can control, and what we cannot. Then we can move forward and feel a little less disempowered by focusing our attention and energies on those things where we can make a difference.

We might not be able to do anything about the lockdowns in our area, but maybe we can make masks for a local shelter, or even start in on some of those projects at home "we've always been meaning to get around to." Maybe we can't do anything about riots and tension in the world, but we can volunteer to walk our elderly neighbor's dog, now that she's afraid to leave the house.

Those are just some very simple examples; you'll almost certainly be able to come up with some that apply to your particular life situation.

Just remember that a significant part of the reason you might be feeling "off center" these days can simply be related to a deeper sense of helplessness... so find little ways in which you can help!

I’ve been ditching the online news and opening up new books, mainly about Eastern philosophy and religion. Its such a stark contrast to the robotic / mechanical views of the Western world...and fits right into what you’re saying here! First I was so angry at how easily fell for this tyranny...but then realized that I have cultivate the happiness from within first. Can’t be trying to change the external environment just the internal.
