Jumping in the Frying Pan

in Foodies Bee Hivelast year (edited)

There is a thriving Asian community in Vancouver, and many of the restaurants in its neighbourhoods reflect their influence. I recently came across a Korean-style sandwich joint that has a limited but delicious menu. Their specialty is crispy chicken. They started out in food trucks but now have a brick and mortar location in the west end. The last time I visited this particular building was before the pandemic when it used to be a Fat Burger restaurant. I decided to check it out.

After a long hike, I was ravenous, and it didn't take much to get me through the door.

Absolutely, don't go bringing your stale-ass mayonnaise-flavored vibes into this place. Make it spicy!

I enjoy the playful simplicity of the décor. Tactful neon. Impeccably clean. The angle at which they take your order is an interesting use of space. It opens up the hallway and gives it a nice flow into the sitting area.

You may have noticed that there was a screen on the menu board that showed a woman holding a blue lemonade. If you have any doubt about the power of advertising, then just take a look at this delicious concoction.

They had several items on the menus, but as it was their "happy hour," I opted for the hot crunch chicken sandwich.

Look at that gorgeous crunchy chicken delight.

Just oozes delicious cholesterol-raising-crispy goodness.

The lemonade was delicious, but let's face it, if you're going to spoil yourself, you might as well go full tilt, and what better way to do so than with a beer that looks like dog urine but tastes much better (not that I know what dog urine tastes like).

I ordered the medium hot sandwich, and it was outrageously delicious, but by the end of the meal, I was beginning to regret it. My mouth was on fire. The blue lemonade was a crucial element of the experience, as it was chock-full of sugar and acids that tamped down the heat. I know they say spicy vibes only, but next time I'm ordering the mild sauce, or maybe even sweet 'n sour. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Mmm! I enjoyed this place and look forward to trying other items in their menu.

Sort:

Tactful neon.

I love that description 🙌

The place looks awesome, and I agree, it screams for beer over lemonade.
I've not had much Korean food except at Incheon Airport, but it was very nice. I had a 15-hour layover and sampled food from many different outlets:)

Thank you! Vancouver used to be famous for it's extensive use of neon in decades past, but it then went out of fashion. So, I enjoy seeing it pop up here and there.

There are a number of Korean BBQ restaurants in the city. It's delicious! I don't go often because one usually has to cook the raw ingredients from scratch (sometimes on the table), and I'd rather not do that. Heh

Oh, Haha! I think that is ideal for a large group, not so much solo. 😆

I agree, it wouldn't be so much fun cooking it on your own. :)

Thanks for sharing your experience at the Korean-style sandwich joint. The restaurant sounds like it has a great atmosphere, with a well-designed menu board and playful neon decor. The hot crunch chicken sandwich with spicy mayo sounds delicious and the blue lemonade was a great touch to help tame the heat. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your meal and then😂 I could help myself but to laugh at you for this 👇

Imagine if you didn't order the blue lemonade 😶. Glad you want to go back, but then still order for hot spicy to build your tolerance. Lovely post and image.

Yes, it's like they knew this was the right combination. It's like Korean secret magic. Sweet, refreshing, and excellent with spicy food.

Glad you want to go back, but then still order for hot spicy to build your tolerance.

I think you're right. One has to build the tolerance to withstand the heat. I couldn't imagine actually eating the real hot one. 🔥 I'd need a jug of lemonade!

I'd need a jug of lemonade!

Not only that, you need a mini rechargeable fan close you 😂

Korean fried chicken seems all the rage these days. Still haven't tried it. Having sworn off meat for good this year, I won't ever - but I'm sure there's a korean fried veggie alternative that will sort me out.

I like fried zucchini flowers done with tempura batter and stuffed with ricotta cheese (which obviously is dairy based, so I don't know if you swing that way).

Oh yeah I swing dairy, that's fine. I'm vegetarian rather than vegan. That sounds bloody amazing!!!! I might have to try making it, zucchinis are in flower at the moment.

The fried flowers rock, for sure. There are a few recipes you can find online. Here's one of them. I hope you get a chance to try it. Happy munching!
