You cannot come to Taiwan without eating its famous beef noodles. Every shop has its own recipe, from the broth and noodle, to the cut of beef used and how it's cooked. This is my favourite, closed during COVID and reopened the week I came back. Lucky me.

The dumplings here are devine and are only a fraction of the price of a well known overrated chain that has gone global in recent years. The cold sliced liver is another of my favourite dish here. Both are my must order every time I come here.

I found this little restaurant that focuses on healthy fresh ingredients. You choose a main, rice ( there's a choice or plain white, brown or mixed), and three vegetable sides ( from a choice of around ten). And this whole meal only cost about USD4!!

Stinky tofu is sure to split people. You either love it or hate it. The tofu is soaked in liquid, normally tea till it ferments, releasing a strong unique aroma. Then it's deep fried to give it another flavour. Here it's grilled which is quite unusual.

I call this poor man's sausage, which is how it originated. The stall is located outside a very famous temple in Taiwan, and the 'sausage' is made from some sort of flour made into a jelly like texture. Then it's cooked in a very tasty sauce. Yummy!

Hotpots are very popular in Taiwan, I lost count of how many I had during my trip. Each hotpot meal comes with a selection of meat, veg and different meat balls. This one had a cute rabbit shape one. Sorry bunny, I didn't mean to poke you in the eye!

This is the first time I've had a mega thick sandwich like this. The egg is just cooked, and is wrapped in a thin slice of pork which is then deep fried in breadcrumbs. The whole filling is cooked to perfection, I have no idea how they do it.

My friend told the restaurant owner, years ago he had a grated choyate with meatballs soup here. It was the best soup he had. It wasn't on the menu anymore but they made it especially for us. Now I understand why he still remembers it all these years

My absolute favourite dessert, sweet tofu soup with taro and sweet potato glutinous balls. The contrasting texture between the silky soft tofu and chewy glutinous balls is heaven. I'm so missing this.

Taiwan is well known for many things, landscape, hikes, tea, night markets, political sensitivity, 7- 11 (did you see my previous post 😃, and also delicious food. You can get yummilicious street food for less than USD1, or Michelin grade restaurant gourmet food at USD100 per head. And of course, there's lots of choices in between. The selection above represents only a small part of what I ate during my recent visit. Going through the photos, is already making me miss Taiwan and the food so much. I want to eat all of it all over again.

Which one was your favorite?

My favorite dish is the pork and egg mega sandwich, although I must admit that all the dishes look delicious.
enjoy the weekend

The sandwich was really nice, and I could literally take one big bite and everything would taste exactly as it should - soft bread, crunchy coating, nicely cooked pork and the egg was still nice and soft inside, yummy!!

I like the looks of the sweet tofu soup 😋

That's quite an unusual choice, most westerns can't get round to the idea of a sweet soup. I absolutely love them as desserts, we have loads of of different in types.

I'm not your typical westerner I guess, lol. I traveled a lot due to being in the armed forces and have been introduced to many cuisines. Also have dated a few non westerners. Now that doesn't mean I have tried everything because I have certainly not.

My ultimate test on westerners' acceptance of Asian food is chicken feet 😉, not sure if you've had that before, it's a popular dim sum at Chinese restauranrs. When I used to work in Hong Kong, whenever we had overseas visitors or colleagues, we'd always take them for dim sum lunch and order chicken feet. Over the years only one guy from Australia tried them, and thought it was ok. Everyone else refused to try it. Those were fun days!!

Chicken feet and gizzards I have had. Now Like balut I haven't tried but would I dont get why the feet is a big deal though, lol

Gizzards are nice, but balut I can't handle. I eat raw fish like sashimi, or beef tartare and dont' even mind my steak blue, but the sight of bits of blood vein and feathers and the slurppy texture puts me off.

As to the infamous chicken feet! Well, it's more for a nibble, a bit like chewing gum (I believe you guys call it bubbly gum), expect it has a lot more flavour ^_^

Now that you described balut some I'm ready for it, lol. Actually now you mention feathers and slurpy you have turned me off. Yes sushi and sashimi are good. I actually trade a friend who owns a sushi and hibachi grill with fresh fish.

That looks extremely yummy, I now have a small craving for noodles right now. some really great photos there really like the look of those stalls

Wouldn't it be great if we could just wizz out for a yummy late night supper in UK? That's what I miss here compared to living in Asia. Kebab seems to be the only option in UK unless you're living in say London

yeah its mostly pizza or kebabs near me nothing much else normally I go to my local Indian cuisine if I want a takeaway

Wow! That all looks amazing! What is choyate? Is it like a zucchini or a cucumber?

They're part of the gourd family, a lot harder than zucchini and cucumber. The size is about the size of a hand and they look like when you cup your hands together, which is what we call them in Hong Kong - cup hand gourd. In Taiwan they're called Buddhist hand gourd, same meaning but more poetic 🙃.

Normally we cut them in chunks to make a soup, this is the first time I've had them grated, and got be to say it was a lot nicer.

Interesting. Thank you. It’s amazing how many different kinds of vegetables there are in Asia that people never learn about in America and Europe. Choyote looks like something I may have eaten in Okinawan food, but then again, maybe not.

If I went to Taiwan I would eat their famous beef noodles, it is a meal that looks super delicious. The meat you see is like what we make here in Venezuela located in South America, cut into moderate pieces, which with its noodles is to be eaten daily. What a good and tasty publication dear @livinguktaiwan I congratulate you. successes.

Good choice! Beef noodle is always a favorite with locals and visitors. Isn't it amazing that countries so far apart have similar dishes?!! It just shows how close mankind is even if we are physically apart.

Your statement is very good, all human beings, although with different languages, there are aspects that unite us, food could be one of them and now Hive, unity is always very important in life. Success in your publication, visits from such distant places always satisfy me.

My favorite one is the noodles soup. I used to eat that kind of soup here but I think it is very far from how tasty yours their. Here when you dine earlier in their store it tastes better but if you dine at almost night time their soup changes it is because the more customers arrived the more they just added water to the broth. And spending just 4 USD for all of that? Wow, that's amazing 🤤.

OMG!! That's not nice to water down the broth! In Taiwan, restaurant owners are pretty strict with maintaining the quality of their food.

That healthy meal is really a good deal isn't it?

That's how that store does its business here. How I wish they think the same as Taiwan.

4 USD for that?? Yes, it is 😍😍😍!

I miss Taiwan. I've been there 4 times. The third and 4th time, I stayed 25 days and 26 days respectively. And I just go to Taiwan for a food trip. Luckily, I found some people who hosted me and let me stay longer. :D

You must really like Taiwan! Staying with a local host is the best way to experience and life and food. They all have their own favorite recipes, and if you were staying at the more rural areas, they were probably growing their own produce as well!

Taiwan is my second alternative to Japan. It was so cheap to fly from the Philippines to Taiwan in 2016 and 2017. I enjoyed eating the dumplings and beef noodle soup. The rice, chicken, and side dishes complete the whole meal. It was a food haven experience. <3

Welcome at any time, happy day 👨‍🍳

Unfortunately the wife is a vegan, making me one too most of the time. But that beef stew does look really good! I wouldn't mind cheating with that dish. Only 4 bucks is pretty amazing for all that food.

ALL is my favorite! Haha. Hmm.. the stinky tofu might be interesting. I love nattō and that is quite stinky, so another stinky soy based product might work well.

Hubby can't stand natto, he literally throws up if he eats it due to the slimy texture!!

Stinky tofu on the other hand he loves but doesn't have often in Asia as you get some dodgy stall holders who soak the tofu in 'you don't want to know what' liquid to get the smelly aroma instead of natural fermentation. Sounds like you might like stinky tofu then, in takes natto to another level 🙂

Man. I really love new and exciting food. When I worked in Charity I would occasionally have my lunch in the library which would promote foreign food. I had something different weekly, it was awesome.

Sadly it was only Eastern European stuff. I would have loved some further east food!

With more people moving around the world nowadays, I think we're starting to see more food variety, often at the markets. In the past, I've seen food stalls from Turkey, Afghanistan, middle east, Africa, and often wanted to try them, but was worried I wouldn't like it, so I always went back to Asian stuff which I'm more familiar with. 😖

Food promotion from the library is a great way to try out new stuff as in a way you're forced to!!!!

We're quite stuck in our ways though, us Brits when it comes to food lol

Those egg sandwiches look pretty awesome ! Gotta try me some of that !
!LUV

I'm very tempted to try make it myself at home, but not sure how I can make sure the pork is cooked without over doing the egg inside

Wow, how delicious everything looks, I've always seen this kind of food in series or on tv and I've always wanted to have the chance to try them all, although that sandwich and the rabbit caught my attention too much haha :D. Very nice pictures, ty for sharing, hope to see more soon!!

Oh wow, those beef noodles and dumplings look absolutely delicious! I'm definitely adding Taiwan to my travel bucket list just for the food. I've never tried stinky tofu though – I'm curious to see which side I'll be on, love it or hate it!

Oh my - all dishes look amazing - the variety, textures, colours etc. I would love to try Taiwanese food after seeing all these dishes. I cannot choose a favorite - they all look great - I need to taste them.😀

Oh my God! To see all these dishes made me craving for some Asian food!!! And I already had dinner! The beef noodles soup is for sure the my favorite dish (but maybe the others that you captures are more "yummy", but I don't know them!) This post made me want to visit Taiwan even more! I don't know anything about the Asian part of the globe (shameful, isn't it?) 😅

I really miss all the taiwan food, especially the cong yang bing, and la chang and the tea eggs from 7-11. :)

Thankfully, I'm going to finally go to Taiwan again soon in a few months! Tickets booked. Taiwan here I come!

Wow, dumplings are so yummy to eat. But all the foods seems so delicious to eat. It's mouth watering seeing your post😊

Great foods!

My father would really love this! 😄

Every dish looks so delicious! I would definitely try the dumplings, they look like Russian pelmeni which are my favourite. It is a pretty post, @livinguktaiwan !
