Back 2 School - A Belated Check-in

in Teachers Lounge3 years ago

It's long over due that I do a proper post in this community. I haven't really done a lot of posting in general after getting back to work about a month ago and sadly this community got the short end of that stick. The few times I've posted I've mainly posted gaming content that I had already created.

Work hit me a little harder than I had expected this school year. I'm working a little more intensive and longer days than what I did before the summer. Monday through Thursday I work nonstop from 08 in the morning until 16 in the afternoon with both teaching, planning and meetings.

I pretty much only get the 35 minutes of lunchtime during recess to sit down for a breather as well as the 10-15 minute breaks between each lesson. This means that when I get home I'm more often knackered than not and end up just doing my duties here on Hive before I boot up some video games. Most often that's Final Fantasy XIV.

While that might sound like a normal day of work to most people it's also strengthened by the fact that teachers don't necessarily only work within those hours. Those are just the hours I have things on my schedule. Outside of this I spend time planning and evaluating as well which means the days are dragging on. I often take this work home with me.

I do have a pretty awesome Friday schedule though to balance this out. For the whole of my Fridays I only have one meeting booked every second week and a single lesson to teach during the day. That means if I spend my time effectively before that lesson I'm outta there by 14 o clock on Fridays. I still end up staying until 16 o clock most days because there's always something more that can be done.

It gets rough working like this for a while but it's all worth it due to the amount of holidays I get. I had seven weeks of Summer holidays and in no more than four weeks from now I have a week of Autumn holidays. Eight weeks after that I'll have another two weeks of Christmas holidays. Then comes a week of Winter holidays sometimes during February and a week of Easter holidays during April. And all of a sudden we're back to the seven weeks of Summer holidays. There's also a whoel bunch of single day holidays in between all of this.

When this is the reward for working those long hours I don't mind it at all. Teachers don't really do the whole 37,5 hour work week that a normal full time job in Norway entails. For teachers that is more like 43-45 hours a week which eventually balances out all of the holidays.

Taken while camping this Summer.

Luckily I got a pretty awesome variation on my schedule this work year. I have a total of 17 hours of lessons evenly spread across all of my subjects. I do a little bit of arts & crafts, some maths, some science and some other smaller subjects. All evenly spread throughout the week. I can start the day with some crafts before doing a science lesson, moving on to some maths before ending the day with a meeting. There's none of those full days of maths or science that I had last school year. Quite refreshing.

Even though I work those long days I start each day energized much because of my great colleagues. Each and single one of them are great, open, warm and funny people. We got to start this school year with a proper party which was much needed after 1,5 years of teaching with Covid. It has really boosted morale around the workplace.

That was a great party as well. It was at a colleagues vacation home out by the sea. The party planning committee had set the table for 30 people and everyone brought some food. It was mostly a seafood buffet with shrimps and smoked salmon. Just awesome. We had a great time singing and just enjoying ourselves.

The only picture I took during the party. Was to busy having fun to take any more.

I'm gonna try and post more often in here and also do some work to grow the community. That is long overdue. If you have any teacher friends here on Hive feel free to point them in the direction of this community. We can't promise much in curation rewards at the moment but the bigger we get the more attention we'll be getting from curators. We can however promise a warm and welcoming community.

Thanks for reading!

Norway seems like a great place to live and work in!

It definitely is!
