Is the climate changing? Are we responsible? What can we do to ensure that our planet continues to host us for the long term future! These are just some of the questions and points that we have been considering during this week's Question Of The Week! The response from you all was just fantastic and over 60 of you have posted on this very pertinent question, and let me say that these posts were really all well worth a read! You have all raised so many points and ideas that it is going to be hard to mention them all but I am going to do my best to share them, as well as a handful of posts that really stood out.

You guys always step up to the plate and manage to share such meaningful posts written with such care and attention to the question and i thank you for helping us in our mission to share, educate, inspire, and bring on positive change. Climate change is one of the most difficult issues to understand, and even today our best scientists are unable to truly pinpoint the main issues, what the leading causes are, or indeed if humanity is really responsible at all for the changes we see in weather, climate, and more. With that said I believe that the changes that you have all proposed will address not only climate change but also the environment in general, especially the way we use our resources, and the way we deal with waste. The list is almost endless as it seems humanity has not yet learned to honour all life with the respect and care that it deserves. The greatest example of this would be mass produced factory farmed meat, which i hope one day soon will find its way into the history books.

With all that said, I would like to start by sharing some quotes from many of your posts with some of the things you think we can do to help mitigate climate change.

Awareness

Putting solar panels on the roof

Plant more trees

Energy efficiency

Limit your use of goods made of wood.

Control the use of water.

Use public vehicles and shared cars.

Use renewable energy sources.

Use glass containers

Grow vegetables hydroponically

Planting of trees.

Turning off light and other electric appliances

Walking

Using Natural Ventilation.

Cycling

Think about the "not enough" story/belief you say or think regularly

Use less hot water

Recycling of waste

Those were just some of the ideas and points you have all made. If you would like to see more posts then you can just check the #qotw tag out and have a look at all the post. SInce there are quite a few i have also picked a few out that I really enjoyed and share them below.

If we don't take action right now, the earts temperature will continue to rise. Paris Climate Agreement Paris Agreement (2015) and the recent COP26-Glasgow negotiations Glasgow Agreement were decided that the temperature should be reduced to 1.5 degrees. The temperature of the earth right now is 2 degrees.

Countries also need to reduce their #greenhouse gas #emissions. In order to achieve these goals, countries have set new policies. Many countries have announced policies specifically aimed at reducing coal production. But I don't believe in these goals. Many of these decisions are political. Individual precautions are important here. That's why this #ecoTrain question is so important.

-What should we do differently to reduce climate change?

1. Awareness
We need to learn lots of information about climate change. Being aware of this is very important. If we become conscious, we begin to affect the people around us in a positive way. For example, parents need to educate their children and teachers should educate their students about clean energy.

Today, the way we are using modern technology without thinking about its side effects will not help our cause. Today, the exploitation of natural resources and the environment is a major challenge. The rules favor vested interests in order to reduce expenditure with the sole aim of earning a maximum profit. The thinking that ignores the rules of pollution control laws is a major hindrance to reducing pollution. Today, our system is tilted heavily towards industry, which clearly exploits our natural resources. The system works for the industries that openly pollute land, water, and air despite all the rules in place.

With glass containers, I keep preserves, seasonings with spices, even my sewing threads or wet food for my kitten, I want to keep canned in the fridge, that is a way to contribute to non-consumerism, which is what brings greater demand for certain products that bring a chain, behind them processing, invested energy, natural materials, such as trees, water, electricity, and many others, all reflected in large industries and their toxic waste, their gas emissions and so on.

I have observed, especially in my community, how the majority does not have the culture of "putting the garbage or waste in its place" and that is worrying because they pollute the spaces, where we all transit and share, it is a constant struggle to keep these bad living people at bay, who do not understand the damage they do to their spaces and to the community and thus themselves, to their families even. Here I think it is a matter of education, of values, of a good culture, which unfortunately many do not see as important.

Because of the above, in the agricultural sector many producers, technicians and scientists asked the same question: What can be done to reduce pollution of ecosystems, climate change and remain productive? the answer was forceful, it must be integrated into the ancestral technical agroecosystems of the traditional agriculture of our grandparents, from these concerns arises the agroecological paradigm known as AGROECOLOGY, which is a science based on the use of productive alternatives that enhance natural processes, such as nutrient recycling, also began with the study of some local resources that can be used to increase production at a lower cost and in an ecological way.

On the other hand, we all know that climate change is influenced by the excessive accumulation of greenhouse gases such as methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Agricultural activity is one of the sectors that can produce and capture this type of gas

For me it is clear; we have arrived at a great and inescapable crossroads: human beings and the ecosystems of our planet, the Earth,we are threatened with absolute degradation, in some cases, and definitive disappearance, in others. We will not be able to escape the consequences, more than those resulting from climate change; those caused by our industrial civilization - now almost three hundred years old - Our inescapable crossroads is the need for a civilizational change.

The use-to-quickly-dispose society has to end. Our products cannot continue to be manufactured under the criteria of planned obsolescence. The paradigm must change; our objects and equipment, manufactured in our factories and industries, must improve through ecological technologies, which make them durable and environmentally friendly - without preying on or degrading ecosystems, in any of the phases of their production and distribution chains - There will be no improvement in climate change or in the degradation of ecosystems accumulated on our unloved planet. And these accumulated damages are not going to be reversed in the coming centuries. Future generations will sufer and regret our negligence and insensitivity.

Obviously 🙄, the threat is massive and it’s a no-brainer that we should apply ourselves with diligence to the problem. As a member of the EcoTrain team, I’ve read several really great posts that suggest ways in which we can tackle the issue, they include reducing the use of plastic, planting trees, loving ourselves more, managing our greed for resources and moving to a plant-based diet. All of these suggestions are fabulous and they will improve the outcome.

What I haven’t seen is a rant against industrialized farming. Mechanized farming contributes more than 30% of all man made emissions; this does not mean only animal farming it means all farming that uses electricity, artificial fertilizers and chemical pest control. But, what can we do about it because, the bottom line is that we’ve got to eat. There are billions of people on the planet and farming methods, despite industrialization, are inadequate; we simply cannot feed everyone as it stands, so how can we reduce the worst scourge against the environment and save our planet.

As a longtime #vegetarian, I've known about the environmental impact of a plant-based diet for a long time. And although debates are still ongoing, we already know from the many studies done that plant-based food produces significantly lower levels of greenhouse gasses than meat production - beef production in particular is the biggest culprit of them all. That said, I still feel that being vegetarian isn't enough to help mitigate the effects of climate change on the planet and people on a personal level. For this post, I would like to share some of my thoughts on the matter.

#1 Cycling First of all, I think that on a personal level it would be awesome if I got a bicycle and used it whenever I go to the farmers' market or the grocery store. It is nice to be able to exercise, especially if my destination is just a short distance from where I live. Another reason for me to get one would be to use it on weekend rides with a few buddies of mine and explore some of the nicer spots in the region. I haven't had the chance to explore the place since we moved here because of the pandemic but now might be a good opportunity for me to explore and see what hidden gems I can find in the back roads and mountainous trails. It is also a great way to improve my health overall and a nice homage to the fight against climate change so this would be at the top of my wish list for now.

The greatest threat faced by this generation is climate change and without a habitable earth to live what's left? But we can still contribute as individuals in tackling climate change. As the climate is changing, so should we change the way we live our lives as this will help in reducing the risk of climatic change. Waiting for the government to do something about it will take too long, it's important to take matters into our hands with the little things we do differently.

However, it's true that climate change occurs naturally, but we can still shift our focus on how to deal with it because these changes are caused by human phenomena through Volcanic activities such as the burning of carbon-rich materials like oil, coal fossils and natural has greatly added to the rate of climatic change since the time of industrial changes. This act increases the proportion of CO2(carbon dioxide) in the air which is capable of throwing the climate out of balance and this leads to atmospheric disruptions.

@consciouscat

I have a rather radical answer. I'm always looking for what's holding a problem in place. Whether it's a habit I want to change, a challenge inside a business that needs untangling or a problem that seems altogether far too big for anyone one person to solve. I don't like picking at the edges doing this little thing or that little thing if I can possibly help it. I want to get to the core of the issue and see what's actually holding that mess (whatever it is) in place.

Climate change is no different. It seems massive, nebulous and for most of us, overwhelming. But as far as I can see there is one key thing that's driving this whole schmozzle and causing it to continue to spiral out of control. If I'm right (and I think I am) then understanding what this force is will allow us to actively resolve climate change so the damage can be limited, and dare I say, even reversed. You're skeptical. I get it. How could one woman on the other side of your screen possibly claim to have the answer to solving climate change? But you're curious too, right? Even if you're thinking, "What could this woman possibly see that the rest of us can't? She said it's an invisible force so how can she can see it?" Simple, I've trained myself to look beneath the surface and see what others can't. I look for patterns. I look for drivers. I deliberately go looking for what other people are missing. It's what I do in my coaching every single day.

I particularly changed my view on climate change when my vision of the planet, which at first I thought was very personal, was reinforced by the academic theory of Dr. James Lovelock, in his book "The Earth is Running Out". In it Lovelock states that the planet is a living being or entity and from that idea he generates his Gaia theory, where he states that the planet in which we live is capable of self-regulating and defending itself, in order to continue having life. The book is really very interesting and raises very important data, I leave you a reference on the text in this link, The Earth is running out.

Now, I think that the main thing to save the planet and, therefore, to save ourselves, as mankind, as well as the rest of the animal species that live in "this unique and beautiful spaceship" using the words of the journalist Walter Martinez. What we must do, is to focus very seriously on changing the means and systems of production, predators and destroyers that we have. To better explain this, I would like to focus on some specific points, which, although they do not cover the whole problem, and perhaps for many readers, are not the most relevant points that should be addressed, I am very sure that these points will illustrate very well the statements I am making here.

We live in a time of great uncertainties. We cannot even rely fully on the knowledge of the sciences. Statistics can be used to affirm or deny the same facts. And in many ways we don't know who to believe or trust. That uncertainty surrounds everything to do with climate change. Some maintain its existence, and not only that, but also argue that we are at a level of irreversibility, almost on the verge of a tragedy of apocalyptic dimensions. Others, on the contrary, do not see the reality of this problem, and limit themselves to saying that global warming is only the talk of ill-intentioned people.

Since it does not make much sense to rely on statistics that in the end will always be questioned, I will limit my comments to my own experience and the changes I see in the environment where I live. I have lived in the same area for almost thirty-five years, an area at the foot of the mountains. In my area there are people who arrived more than sixty years ago, so we have some basis for appreciating how our environment has changed.

Climate change is very real and if left unchecked, it'll cause us a lot of problems and let's just say I'll be glad I don't have children who have to live in such a world. Because it isn't something for a far away future. We are already seeing plenty of signs. Climate change will hit everyone differently, but even the rich, western countries will not be spared. Which is fitting, because we did cause most of it. Extreme weather, sea water rising, food shortages, rising prices, and to those who think immigration is a problem now? Just wait and see what a huge stream of climate immigrants you'll get if you refuse to act now.

We can point fingers at big corporations, forgetting that WE are the ones buying their products. We can point fingers at governments which WE ourselves put in place. We can point fingers at neighbours, so WE don't have to do anything, but guess what? That won't give your kids and grandkids a hospitable earth in the future.

There is a saying, it is NEVER too late to try, to make a change. All we need is a mindset to move forward. With this in mind, I am about to display a few of the many simple steps that our ignorant minds vividly threw in the garbage without thinking. And here we are suffering for our own habits and causes. So what are these habits or causes?

Liter-litter everywhere
In my country, I have seen people take no action against littering. It is a very common behavior to throw leftovers here and there. It is also a common habit to throw packets on the streets. I have also heard that it is not only a problem in my country but in many others too. In contrast, other countries are quite hygienic in terms of littering but in other terms that might not be the case.

If we start using dustbins and garbage properly while maintaining proper hygiene in those areas things might begin to change. Littering causes health problems and increases insects while the rate of Malaria and Dengue increases too. Being hygienic is the first step of precautionary against any diseases in general.
