The Big Questions - Response to Ecotrain Question of the Week...

in ecoTrain4 years ago (edited)

I appreciate this weeks @Ecotrain 's question (details here) for it had me pause from my day to day dealings and think and reflect on:

What is the biggest question or mystery in your life that until now you haven't had the answer to?

I have found some answers to my questions but what I wanted to contemplate on deals with our future and stems from the belief that our children are our future.

With that belief a few questions formulated which I will address each separately.

First

Guiding our children where do we want to direct them to?

The big thing that came to mind was to live in peace and harmony, having goodwill towards all mankind and beings.

Next question:

How do we have them develop to their greatest potential?

It begins by seeing the potential in the child and believing in them, scaffolding them to new levels.

Another question:

What values would you want to to instill in them?

Share Your Heart.jpg

I'm a big believer in kindness. As Albert Schweitzer said:

Constant kindness can accomplish as much as the sun making ice melt. Kindness causes misunderstandings, mistrust and hostility to evaporate.

With kindness you can show empathy, acceptance and tolerance which in themselves are good values.

Kindness nourishes, heals, strengthens and uplifts us.
There has been studies that show that kindness is not only a good moral value but it is good for you as it actually benefits your brain, your body and your emotions. When we perform random acts of kindness, we activate areas of pleasure, social connection and trust in our brains, creating a positive loop in our mind. Kindness makes you happier and happiness makes you kinder. When you are happy, you are more likely to feel giving and kind towards others.

Also if "healthcare is delivered with kindness it can hasten the healing process. Kinder care leads to a range of outcomes including reduced pain, lowered blood pressure and less anxiety for the patient and caregivers. With that lower stress and anxiety levels it decreases pain with endorphins and feel-good hormones being released at the time of the act." - taken from a PLR article I had on kindness

Now you see why I am big on kindness!

One other value I would want to see instilled is that of compassion where you bring awareness, recognizing that there is suffering and you are genuinely concerned with other's needs and well being.

An important quality to have is integrity and with that to know your values and being true to those values and morals. With integrity an important aspect is honesty and keeping your promises.

One more question:

What wisdoms would you want passed on to the children?

Something that made a big difference in my life was when I found the Dhamma and began my meditation practice allowing me to live a peaceful life. When I look back before I knew the teachings of the Buddha my life was more scattered. There was a lot of anger. My path was unclear.

One of the main teachings of the Buddha was the four noble truths -

The Four Noble Truths are the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering.

Found in these truths is desire and ignorance as the root of suffering. So I would want to see ignorance dispersed and for the children to understand that all things come into being and all things pass away (knowing this with deep understanding has served me well.) Also that pursuing cravings of pleasure, material goods, and immortality can be very unsatisfactory and will not lead to a very fulfilling life.

As a parent I had always wanted the best for my child. Working with young Pre-K children in the "Play and Exploration" program I always want to see them open up, blossom and grow to their greatest potential, as a grandparent I wanted to share my wisdom gain through out my life.

If you care to ponder these questions I posed and add to my thoughts I would greatly appreciate it.
