Hello to everyone in the community! Today I bring you an article dedicated to the II National and International Collective Exhibition "Beyond disABILITY". An event that took place on September 3 at the José Rafael Pocaterra Museum, Valencia, Venezuela. On the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, this artistic encounter became a reality. Where people with disabilities or not, had the opportunity to present a pictorial work that was related to noble aspects or an optimistic vision about disabilities.

In a previous post I talked about this moment and the painting I did to commemorate this day. Since I was participating in it. However, there I talked a bit about the technical aspects of the painting and the preparation for the event. Today I leave here how was this exhibition, what I saw and what I felt during the whole event because it was a very beautiful experience. It is worth mentioning that my friend Alicia, who was one of the organizers of the event and participating artist, is the one who informed me about this exhibition and also invited me to participate.

The event started at nine o'clock in the morning and I was very worried because that same day I had the signing of the university book. But successfully I was able to leave early and went home, changed and arrived at the museum. Not many people had arrived yet, so I walked around the center and I met my friend Alicia. We arrived together just in time for the opening of the exhibition. The words of the members of the Fundacion Arte y disCAPACIDAD, Mrs. Carla Rodriguez and Dexy Reyes, were quite touching because they were very excited to start the second edition of this event and the great receptivity they had from national and international artists. Finally the doors to the hall were opened and we were able to see the work of the artists.

Among those artists was my friend Alicia, who made a very significant collage. In that image there was a person on his back and in front of him a large number of mouths. In addition, her arm was close to her ear as if she wanted to listen more closely to what those mouths were saying. Alicia is hearing impaired and all this time she has learned to communicate with other people through her lips. The gestures of the lips and the face in general have helped her to understand words and sentences. This is how I learned to talk to her and it was easy for both of us.

It was very moving to hear her tell her story because even though she is a lovely person and an optimistic person, she has suffered some humiliation because of her disability. However, her words will stay with me forever: we must accept our disability to know our capabilities, we need to accept ourselves. We could not hold back our tears and it was a moment that will remain in my heart. Sincerely it was incredible to listen to her and the other people there because they were all happy to be able to show something of themselves through art. We also had the participation of Santiago Martinez as a musician, the poetry of Elizabeth Rubiano and the mime performance of Maria Perez.

Finally my friends, I must say that I learned many things that day and that is that love is one of the noblest feelings. In that place you could feel the love and respect that we need so much these days. This space was opened to give visibility to people with disabilities, not because they are special because of it (I am against this idea of being condescending because it sincerely borders on pity and that is something that should not happen) but because they are incredible people by themselves and labels are superfluous. I believe that we need to educate ourselves a lot about it because for example in the educational field these issues are not addressed (in addition to few people specialized in the area). It is the need to make people in our society aware that dignified treatment is imperative. Without further ado, I wish to thank all those who support my work. The last publication had a great reception and that is thanks to you. I send you a big hug and see you next time!
