My partecipation to #8 edition of Ladies of Hive Contest / La mia partecipazione all’ #8 edizione del Contest di Ladies of Hive

Hello everybody.

Also this week the Ladies of Hive team amazes us with a new contest, which aims to introduce users to each other and learn new things. I think this is a great idea and I’m very happy to have met more closely, here on our beautiful blockchain, some user from female universe!

The questions I decided to answer are two. Let's begin!

If you started all over again, what kind of career would you like or want?

When I was a child, we were often asked at school "What job do you want to do when you grow up?" and the answers of my classmates were “I want to be a teacher, dancer, doctor, vet, singer, stylist, pastry chef ...” etc.
My answer, however, up to the age of about 12, was always the same: "I want to be an ASTRONAUT!".
It's been 10 years since then, but as soon as I read the contest question it was the first thing that came to mind.

I've always liked the astronomy. Near where I lived as a young girl there is an important astronomical observatory, one of the largest in Italy, and I went several times to observe the sky through the instruments they made available to scholars and curious people.
The school itself took us on a trip with our nose up and the experts explained all the mysteries related to the atmosphere and the planets.
During these lessons, I remember that I was fascinated by the beauty of the stars and dreamed of being able to reach the universe just like the great astronauts shown on television did.

Over time, I abandoned the idea of becoming an astronaut, for a few simple reasons. First of all, I found myself face to face with reality: I don't have the requisites!
To be able to undertake this path, in fact, it is necessary to have a certain height, excellent eyesight and athletic physical prowess: the aspiring astronauts are subjected to hard training and survival tests very similar to those of the aeronautical military academy. So it's not really my case, since I'm not a sportsman at all and my favorite discipline is yoga.
Furthermore, in order to be eligible for the selections, it is essential to have a degree in one of the following subjects: mathematics, physics, astrophysics, aerospace engineering, ... And I never got along very well with numbers!
Last, but not least, to consider is that during the adolescence my interests have changed, because I became interested in other science subjects such as chemistry, biology, medicine and botany. While remaining in the scientific sector, I therefore approached on a completely different type of career.

Today my passion for space has not disappeared, in fact in my free time I like to read up on the latest news and I always take the opportunity to see documentaries and films about this subject. I still go to the astronomical observatory and I would like to take my grandchildren there when they are of the right age to understand the beauties of space.

I am very fascinated by the fact that space is an unexplored and for the most part unknown place. I think that giant strides have been made in this direction in the last century and I can't wait to see the developments of this fantastic science.

What flower would best represent you? And why?

Let’s start with the fact that I love botany and for me all flowers are delicious for the simple fact of being little miracles of nature.
It was not easy to choose a flower to identify with, but after thinking about it for a while, here is my answer: Galanthus nivalis, the Snowdrop.

It is a small and white flower, it seems very delicate but instead it is resistant as a rock. This flower is very common in the areas where I live, as it does well with the cold climate typical of winter in Northern Italy, and is found both spontaneous and cultivated.

The first part of the name of the flower, “Galanthus”, means “white as milk”, from “gala” = milk and “anthos” = flower. The second part, "nivalis", instead derives from the fact that it is very common to find it blooming in the snow. It is one of the very few species to have winter as a flowering period, which is my favorite season!

There are also some stories and legends related to this flower. For example, in the Bible it happens that, at a certain point, Adam and Eve are expelled from Paradise and are sad about the idea of being in a cold and dark place. But an angel decides to give them a gift, and through a miracle he makes a snowdrop appear.

Another interesting aspect is that this flower is used in pharmacology because you can extract the galantamine, an alkaloid irreversible inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase used as a medicine in many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's (if interested in the topic, I recommend my last post about it).

Here it is why the snowdrop is my choice: it is strong, resilient, graceful, loves the cold and is useful for science.

Ciao a tutti.

Anche questa settimana il team di Ladies of Hive ci stupisce con un nuovo contest, il quale si pone l’obiettivo di far conoscere fra di loro gli utenti e imparare cose nuove. Penso che questa sia un’ottima idea e sono molto contenta di aver conosciuto più da vicino, qui sulla nostra bellissima blockchain, qualche utente dell’universo femminile!

Le domande alle quali ho deciso di rispondere sono due. Iniziamo!

Se ricominciassi tutto da capo, che tipo di carriera vorresti?

Quando ero bambina, a scuola ci veniva spesso chiesto “Che lavoro vuoi fare da grande?” e le risposte delle mie compagne di classe erano “Voglio fare la maestra, ballerina, dottoressa, veterinaria, cantante, stilista, pasticcera …” E chi più ne ha, più ne metta.
La mia risposta, invece, fino all’età di circa 12 anni, era sempre la stessa: “Io voglio fare l’ASTRONAUTA!”.
Sono passati 10 anni da allora, ma appena ho letto la domanda del contest è stata proprio la prima cosa che mi è venuta in mente.

Mi è sempre piaciuto lo spazio. Vicino a dove abitavo da giovane si trova un importante osservatorio astronomico, uno dei più grandi d’Italia, e mi sono recata varie volte a osservare il cielo attraverso gli strumenti che mettevano a disposizione di studiosi e curiosi.
La scuola stessa ci portava in gita con il naso all’insù e gli esperti ci spiegavano tutti i misteri legati all’atmosfera e ai pianeti.
Durante queste lezioni, mi ricordo che rimanevo affascinata dalla bellezza delle stelle e sognavo di poter raggiungere l’universo proprio come facevano i grandi astronauti mostrati in televisione.

Con il passare del tempo ho abbandonato l’idea di diventare astronauta, per pochi e semplici motivi. Innanzitutto, mi sono trovata faccia a faccia con la realtà: non ho i requisiti richiesti!
Per poter intraprendere questo percorso, infatti, è necessario avere una determinata altezza, un’ottima vista e una prestanza fisica atletica: gli aspiranti astronauti sono sottoposti a duro addestramento e prove di sopravvivenza molto simili a quelle dell’accademia militare aeronautica. Non è quindi proprio il mio caso, dato che non sono sportiva per nulla e la mia disciplina preferita è lo yoga.
Inoltre, per poter accedere alle selezioni, è fondamentale avere una laurea in una delle seguenti materie: matematica, fisica, astrofisica, ingegneria aerospaziale, … E io con i numeri non sono mai andata molto d’accordo!
Ultimo fatto, ma non meno importante, da considerare è che crescendo i miei interessi sono cambiati, perché mi sono appassionata di altre materie scientifiche come chimica, biologia, medicina e botanica. Pur rimanendo nel settore scientifico, ho quindi intrapreso tutt’altro tipo di carriera.

Oggi la mia passione nei confronti dello spazio non è scomparsa, infatti nel tempo libero mi piace documentarmi sulle ultime novità e colgo sempre l’occasione per vedere documentari e film sul tema. Mi reco ancora all’osservatorio astronomico e mi piacerebbe portare lì i miei nipotini quando avranno l’età giusta per comprendere le bellezze dello spazio.
Mi affascina molto il fatto che lo spazio sia un luogo inesplorato e per la maggior parte sconosciuto. Penso che nell’ultimo secolo siano stati fatti dei passi da gigante in questo senso e non vedo l’ora di vedere gli sviluppi di questa fantastica scienza.

Quale fiore ti rappresenta meglio? E perché?

Partiamo dal presupposto che amo la botanica e per me tutti i fiori sono deliziosi per il semplice fatto di essere dei piccoli miracoli della natura.
Non è stato facile scegliere un fiore in cui identificarsi, ma dopo averci pensato un po’ ecco la mia risposta: Galanthus nivalis, il Bucaneve.

Si tratta di un fiore piccolino e di colore bianco, a vederlo sembra molto delicato ma invece è resistente come una roccia. Questo fiore è molto comune nelle zone dove abito, in quanto si trova bene con il clima freddo tipico dell’inverno nel Nord Italia, e si trova sia spontaneo che coltivato.

La prima parte del nome del fiore, “Galanthus”, significa “bianco come il latte”, da “gala” = latte e “anthos” = fiore. La seconda parte, “nivalis”, invece deriva dal fatto che è molto comune trovarlo fiorire in mezzo alla neve. È una delle pochissime specie ad avere come periodo di fioritura l’inverno, che è la mia stagione preferita!

Vi sono anche alcune storie e leggende legate a questo fiore. Ad esempio, nella Bibbia accade che, a un certo punto, Adamo ed Eva sono scacciati dal paradiso terrestre e sono sconfortati all’idea di trovarsi in un luogo freddo e buio. Ma un angelo decide di fare loro un regalo, e attraverso un miracolo fa apparire un bucaneve.

Un altro aspetto interessante è che questo fiore viene utilizzato in farmacologia perché vi si può estrarre la galantamina, un alcaloide inibitore irreversibile dell’enzima acetilcolinesterasi utilizzato come farmaco in numerose patologie neurodegenerative come l’Alzheimer (se interessa l’argomento, consiglio il mio ultimo post a riguardo).

Ecco quindi perché il bucaneve è la mia scelta: è forte, resiliente, grazioso, ama il freddo ed è utile per la scienza.
