2021 St. Helena Silver Chinese Trade Dollar

in Ladies of Hive2 years ago

In 1873, the United States Trade Dollar were struck for use in export trade with Asia and much of the beginning production was exported to China. Subsequently when the price of silver went down, the silver dollars were reimported back into the United States.

The first Chinese Trade Dollars were produced in 1889, sixteen years after the U.S. Trade Dollars. The design of the coin included a dragon thus the coins were known as the Dragon Dollar.

Reverse: The reverse features the graceful, serpentine form of a Chinese style dragon, as it coils itself around a stylized globe in the background. The powerful, legendary creature is depicted with a pearl in its grasp, a symbol for wisdom and enlightenment in Chinese culture. The inscription "TRADE DOLLAR" sweeps overhead.

Obverse: The obverse is adorned with a gorgeously lifelike, right facing portrait of the current British monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Surrounding inscriptions include "QUEEN ELIZABETH II," "ST. HELENA," "ONE POUND" and "2021." This rendition of the Queen represents the fifth definitive coinage portrait of the monarch. The image is the work of artist Jody Clark, an award-winning sculptor/engraver for The Royal Mint since 2012.

This trade dollar was minted by the Tower Mint.

I got three of the four original Trade Dollars so far.
St. Helena must be making a nice income from coin Seigniorage sales considering the population is about 6000 people living there.

Always, with love 🤗 🌺 💖

The reason this Chinese Trade dollar does look like the rest is because this wasn't in true existence, except for the fact that they were Dragon Dollar coins.

It's a beautiful trade round. I really like the detailing of the dragon. Awesome! Take care sis and thanks for sharing!😘🤗🌸💕

Yes, they are pretty cool! None of the old Dragon Dollar had this dragon.

Hugs and kisses, sis 😘🤗🌸💕

🤗😘💕🌸🎄

Just look at the eyes of the Dragon @silversaver888, It looks like it is coming right off the Silver coin, very impressive!!😳😀

Neat, huh!!!
I like it too, and it was what attracted me to this coin, @silvertop 😀.

Very nice coin, it's been a while since you have posted a dragon I figured you were over due and one would be coming soon. lol

You know me too well, @maddogmike!!!

Is it a Chinese Dragon, I only heard about them and people talk about Myth. It is beautiful, so precisely crafted. And yea, I saw one pound coin before, probably my dad had one of those coins (pound one)...

Beautiful dragon!
They are mythical animals. Only in myths do they exist!
They are in different denominations, depending on the type of coins.
The gold are denominated much higher, but the true value of the coin does not depend on the face value of the coin.

Speaking of DRAGONS Ms. Saver @silversaver888

And this is the first time I've ever seen a dragon on a coin accepted as currency. My mind is actually blown 🤯 thank you for sharing about the China trade dollar!

They are not meant to be spent because the face value of the coin is far from its real value!

Spoken like a true collector! C:

Do you know that we have a stacker friend from Hawaii?
His name is Menehune Stacker!

LMAO 😂 menehune! Now that's a good name 👌 💯 and no, I did not know!

Wow saver! That’s an awesome coin —-> another one of your great shows goes on “the list.”
