🗞 Market Wrap: Bitcoin Stuck Around $58K; Monthly Volatility Drops to 3-Month Low

Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $57,486.10-$58,880.82 (CoinDesk 20)

BTC trades between its 10-hour and 50-hour averages on the hourly chart, a sideways signal for market technicians.

Bitcoin’s price action has been less exciting as the No. 1 cryptocurrency by market capitalization traded in a narrow range between $55,500 and $60,000 over the past week.

Bitcoin’s spot trading volume on the eight, mostly-U.S. crypto exchanges tracked by CoinDesk drifted even lower on Friday from the previous day, slightly above $1 billion at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the BTC/USD pair’s one-month realized volatility has fallen from a peak of 114% in February to about 62%, the lowest level since the end of November.

Ether and altcoins

Ether’s 24-hour range: $2,045.05-$2,100.23 (CoinDesk 20)

Ether trades between its 10-hour and 50-hour averages on the hourly chart, a sideways signal for market technicians.

The star of the alternative cryptocurrencies (“altcoins”) on Friday was again xrp (XRP). The token used in Ripple Labs’ payments received another endorsement from analyst Peter Brandt, who said XRP could hit new all-time highs in the coming months.

🗞 The Top Performing DeFi Coins in Q1 Were Not on Ethereum

The best performing DeFi tokens in Q1 don't run on Ethereum, according to Messari.

Competing networks have exploded in popularity this year.

This is partly because DeFi investors have been priced out of Ethereum’s high-cost network.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) continues to do exceptionally well in 2021. But the top performing assets so far this year are newcomers—and don’t even run on Ethereum.

According to a Q1 Performance Recap report released today by cryptocurrency data provider Messari, the top two performing DeFi

"DeFi" is shorthand for a group of peer-to-peer financial products, such as lending, borrowing, and trading platforms. They basically allow their users to access bank-like services without the need for an actual bank or other third-party intermediary.

PancakeSwap is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that runs on Binance Smart Chain—a blockchain platform launched by the world’s biggest centralized crypto exchange, Binance. The exchange’s native token, CAKE, is used by investors to earn rewards or vote on the project’s updates. Its price has shot up by 3,031% since the start of the year, beating out all other DeFi tokens so far. Today it’s trading for $23.52, according to Messari.

Terra (LUNA) is a financial ecosystem that includes a stablecoin facilitator, synthetic assets, savings accounts and more. LUNA (today trading for $16.18) is also a governance token that can earn its users rewards. It is also used for staking to validate blocks. It is up 2,784% since the start of the year.

Both have exploded in popularity, according to Messari, since they’re cheaper and more efficient platforms for getting involved in DeFi relative to the more established products on Ethereum, such as Uniswap or Aave.

🗞 Argentina’s Central Bank Demands Personal Details of Country’s Bitcoin Buyers

Argentina's central bank has sent notice to regional banks in the country to report which customers are buying or holding Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

It's part of a year-long effort to curb illicit Bitcoin trading and further regulate the market within the country.

The Central Bank of Argentina has requested that all banking institutions in the country submit information about customers who have carried out any transaction with Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, or hold cryptocurrencies in their digital portfolios.

The move furthers a plan that President Alberto Fernandez set in motion last year in an attempt to control capital outflows and curb inflation. The Argentine peso, the country’s national currency, has already lost 10% of its value this year. During the administration of the previous president, Mauricio Macri, the peso lost about 84% of its value in his four years in office.

🗞 Revolut Adds 11 Cryptocurrencies to Its Trading Offerings

British digital banking service Revolut has added another 11 cryptocurrencies for customers in the U.K. and European Union to trade.

According to a blog post published Thursday, they are cardano (ADA), uniswap (UNI), synthetix (SNX), yearn.finance (YFI), UMA, bancor (BNT, -0.52%) (BNT), filecoin (FIL), loopring (LRC, +2.19%) (LRC), numeraire (NMR), the graph (GRT) and orchid (OXT).

This follows offering support for four new tokens including EOS and tezos (XTZ) in December 2020.

The blog post said crypto funds are held in cold storage “with some of the best custodians in the crypto game.”

Revolut has over 15 million customers worldwide, last year expanding its crypto offering to Australia and 49 states in the U.S.
