Art Talk: Chihuly on Paper

in Art Talk2 years ago (edited)

This year my monthly Art Talk theme is Artists. As much as I resisted doing another post about Dale Chihuly (I have already posted 11 Chihuly posts).

Then I realized with the Chihuly exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden and my visits there twice a week for the past three months. I am engrossed in Chihuly and want to talk more about this fascinating artist.

Chihuly is best known for his glass sculpture, he doesn't get as much recognition for his paintings and charcoal drawings. Today I am going to talk about Chihuly on Paper.

According to the Chihuly website Chihuly.com

For Chihuly, drawing is every bit as natural as glassblowing. Chihuly works with acrylic paints, ink, pencil, charcoal, graphite-even fire- to express his ideas with energy and exuberance.

They range from light and ethereal to bold and colorful.

The texture of the paintings is incredible.

Some relate to Chihuly's glass sculptures, others are an experience all their own.

Venetians

Chihuly began the Venetian series as an experiment in 1988 wit the Italian maestro glassblower Lino Tagliopeirta.

Seeking to take traditional methods to another level, he used drawings to communicate his creative vision to Tagliopietra- handles changed to knots, prunts (glass knobs) to claws, colors and forms became more extremes, shifting from symmetrical to asymmetrical.

The resulting sculptures combine historical traditions in glassmaking and decorative arts with contemporary techniques and free-spirited spontaneity.

Rotolo

Rotolo (Italian for "coil" are some of the most technically challenging work Chihuly has created. Weighing as much as 140 pounds, each piece is simultaneously heavy, intricate, and delicate.

Chihuly began the series in 2013 as an exploration of the quality of light emanating from complex clear glass forms. Over time, he expanded the series to include rich hues of red, blue, green and purple.

Most of the drawings are quite spontaneous. I don't do much with preconceived ideas. In the course of a day of blowing glass, I might do 15 or 20 drawings. - Chihuly.

If find this fascinating and wonderful. I really do enjoy and appreciate the big glass sculptures and would encourage everyone to see them. I also really enjoy the small glass sculptures and the works on paper that you can see only in museums or inside galleries at the garden.

I hope you enjoyed this look at Chihuly's paintings and drawings. He really is quite an amazing artist. If you would like to learn more about Chihuly or see more of his glass sculptures check out the PeakD collection Chihuly Groupie.

You make my day... Always nice to see another Chihuly update!

Yay, so glad you enjoyed this Chihuly update. I never get tired of seeing it. Glass changes depending on the light and so I go over and over. And of course the garden is continually changing too!

Those are pretty cool. I like the bold and colorful ones myself. Some of them look like sketches for glass blowing ideas, like the ones of the 8 different vases.

It's cool that they use fire in some of their creations 🔥🔥🔥🔥.

Hello @leaky20 The bright ones are great. The way the pain is splattered on some of them remind me of Jackson Pollock. I think that the sketches are so cool especially when you can see the final glass pieces close by.

Hey there, I was wondering where have you been!
It looks like Chihuly has a huge fan :)

Hello. So great to hear from you. I know I have been really quite on Hive. I had some medical issues and have otherwise been pre occupied.

I hope nothing severe and I wish everything will turn out well. Good to have you back!

Thanks so much. I was in the hospital for a bit. Things are good now and I am working with my doctor to see what needs to be done next.

Hugs and positive thoughts for you, from Crete :)

We were thinking of you indeed. Really hope you are well!

The post is fascinating! I love all this info about the artist that you introduced us through his glass sculptures.

Thanks so much. Glad you liked it. I am doing so much better now.

That's nice to hear! Wish you a quick and full recovery!

Cool stuff. I didn't even realize worked work other mediums. It would be fun to see some of that in person, though I like the glass sculpture best. He has a large glass piece in the Mayo Clinic, in my hometown of Rochester, MN,.

That is cool. He seems do have large pieces all over. It is like finding a great treasure when you I see them outside an exhibit. So fun.

very interesting!

This is a very interesting type of art and painting, personally I can see that in his works he uses very thick strokes and defines the colors well in each one of them. I love how he mixes several colors and makes them both look perfect.

Hi @gustavoadolfodca. Thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed works of art. He is a master of color for sure.

I like it. Especially the glass series. Damn, how wonderful would that look in my living room.

Thanks. The glass is incredible.
