Your favorite Tournament Structures?

in PeakMonsters4 years ago (edited)

We are going to make a few tournaments to test what is the best type of tournaments.

What is your favorite tournament layout?
We appreciate the multi-round tournaments so let's go with those as an assumption for all these questions

LENGTH? (Round Duration)
Do you like 1 days or perhaps 3 days so there's no rush?

ENTRY FEE

  • We've done entry fee options where everyone gets their entry fee back as long as they play.
  • Many tournaments may be rewards to peakmonsters users and therefore require a PMT token we may airdrop to our users.
  • But we will probably do some that are DEC entries so let's hear your opinions.

TEAM SELECT TIME
Does this even matter? Why would peakmonsters make a tournament without that number being high? It's not like users have to wait on other users if the time is higher.

GROUP SIZE
This one is an important one i assume because it determines how many games you play. What is the best size for people? I suppose everyone will have a different opinion but love to hear your thoughts.

WINNER ADVANCEMENT %
How many people make it into a second round. Not sure what is been the most fun or successful?

PRIZE STRUCTURE STRATEGY
Better to reward every placement differently or in groupings?
Now with multi-rounds I would think it's fair again to reward each placement.

Sort:

LENGTH

  • 24h or 12h per round, 3 days is too long, I mean, nobody likes to wait

TEAM SELECT TIME

  • 2-3 minutes, it shouldn't be too long, it's part of the game, you have to select what you think is the best, not what your guildmates, dog, cat think is the best (you have time to ask them)

GROUP SIZE

  • 10 - 12

WINNER ADVANCEMENT %

  • 20% - 30%

PRIZE STRUCTURE STRATEGY

  • prizes are split in case of the same W/L/D record anyway so initial setup does not make that big difference

How about group size 8-10.
Team select time can be 3min. That should be more than enough time.
30% advancement is a nice number. Not higher than 40 though.

if multi round results in players with very similar win/loss stats... then i would group the prizes. Maybe top 4 - prize amount x
5-8 1/2x
and 9-16 1/4x
17-32 1/10x or 1/25x

Thanks for working on these and listening to player feedback!!

Peace

id be keen to try a 3 day x 24 hr round tournament with say 6-8 matches per day and a bit longer selection time.

Prize structure - everyone getting at least something if they make it to the 3rd round.

Will donate 50k dec if you put one of these together. hit me up on discord or hive.

I missed this post for few days, but still wanna post my thoughts on this:

LENGTH: 24h round length seems best to me - no need to hurry and nearly everyone plays at least once a day under normal circumstances.

ENTRY FEE: anything but free for bot reasons.

TEAM SELECT TIME: longer, even 5 or 10 minutes if possible. Some situations are interesting and thinking about possible counters to counters (to counters, ...) is fun in those cases. I would not use this extra time often, but when I would it will be more fun for me. If someone wants to run simulations or consult oracle be my guest - better opponents (skill wise) are always welcomed.

GROUP SIZE: depends whether you expect bots to join. If its expected to be purely human tournament 10 is sufficient, with bots I would prefer 15-20. Obviously tournament with low to zero chance of bots are preferable over bot infested ones.

WINNER ADVANCEMENT %: linked to number of rounds, in 2 round tournaments 20% is sufficient, but it would be interesting to see 3 round tournaments with 30% or even 4 round tournaments with 50% or so.

PRIZE STRUCTURE STRATEGY: even split at W/L/D parity, but when it comes to prize grouping I would prefer more prize groups (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4-5th, 6-10th, 11-20th, 21-50th for example) groupings currently used in official tournaments (for example 1-4th, 5-8th, 9-16th, 17-32nd) seems to me like relic of past and bit lazy way to do prizes when we have many rounds and "pseudo-swiss" instead of single elimination.

LENGTH? (Round Duration)
1 day is nice, but I'd like a week too, with 7 rounds, one per day :). As a parent I don't like tournaments where I have to be online an ready at set times.

ENTRY FEE

I'm happy with DEC entries, or with HIVE/HBD if the integration is done well.

TEAM SELECT TIME
Yes, quick thinking is a key component for the game, so I don't mind a short team select time at all. But a format where it is very long is also nice, for variety.

GROUP SIZE
I'd like small groups with many rounds.

WINNER ADVANCEMENT %
if it's 2 rounds, then 25% is probably the right level.

PRIZE STRUCTURE STRATEGY
It's nicest to reward every placement differently, and not in groupings. That makes the suspense higher towards the end :).
